Does anybody know why Verne gave Stan Hansen the title in the first place considering it turned into such a disater? Verne and Greg don't really answer that question in The Spectacular Legacy af the AWA.
I hate when the one guy CONSTANTLY says his full name. "I was going to interview Stan the lariat Hansen but Stan the lariat Hanson attacked my partner. Stan the lariat Hansen had just come back from Japan and on the airplane I'm told Stan the lariat Hansen had the Kosher meal and 2 beers. When in Japan Stan the lariat Hansen enjoys sushi, but don't ever expect Stan the lariat Hansen to pick up the check. Stan the lariat Hansen is not only dangerous, but STan the lariat Hansen is cheap."
@JohnBlack2345 Well he was also a fan favorite at the beginning of his career, before he became a huge star in the AWA, but you are still right, Bockwinkel was a heel during the 3/4 of his career. :)
Having Bockwinkel as a face doesn't make sense. Awarding him the belt was even worse. Nick said in a recent interview that the AWA just didn't have time to hold a tournament to crown a new champion. HOGWASH! Also, having someone as un predictable as Stan Hansen as your Champion probably wasn't a great idea either. I think that having Sgt. Slaughter (in shape) or Wahoo McDaniel as a strong face champion made more sense.
Stan said in an interview back then, " The other day my son took the AWA belt out to his elementary school without saying anything to me and showed it off to his classmates. They all seemed to be surprised at it not knowing his daddy is a pro-wrestler. I scolded him for it.LOL"

Nick Bockwinkel was so good, he could have 5 stars match with anybody.
However he was more fun to watch when he was a heel. Only my opinion.

I used to love watching Hansen abuse Larry Nelson. This was one of the last AWA shows that had a respectable looking crowd attending.
