There seems to be so much more Tanya on youtube; I'm so glad. I wish there was more Wieland Kuijken also. Tanya is a freakin master of baroque cello; I wish we had her complete bach suites videos on youtube (like maisky for example). Thanks for posting this.
Very nice through-phrasing throughout, and I agree with her re-inversion of the Ge6 before the final cadence--the only reason it's not written that way is because the scordatura notation interferes with clarity. Disagree with the terce a Piccardie though.
Impresionantissimo! Tanya breathes life into this piece. She has a singular dialogue with the audience like no other can because of her uniqueness. She is musically "telling" us what she thinks we should be hearing. Brava!
I think the ornamentation and phrasing are very baroque. You can compare the completely different sound, interpretation, vibrato and so on in her Rachmaninoff video, and it isn't just the bow of course, the cello, strings, bridge, etc are different as well.
Amazing performance of a beautiful piece of music. The gut strings/baroque bow seem to give the cello a very different attack, it almost barks on the staccato notes, yet it has a very rich and detailed tone on the sustained notes. Lovely!
I really like this cellists Bach! All gut strings add interesting flavor, but not as clean as metal. Does anybody else find her D string "raspy" in fast passages? The few time I try to play on pure gut, clean string crossings were difficult.
Amazingly played, the cello is one of the few instruments that can delight my ears, ironically i play a wind instrument, the tenor saxophone ='( lol great job!

The E natural at the end, sometimes referred to as a "Tierce de Picardie" is clearly marked in Anna Magdalena Bach's autograph ms.

I really love that terce a Piccardieo though. Adds some flavor. Why is it you disagree?

Try the high resolution sound at iFilm or Stage6 for a less metallic sound.

Are there recordings by this artist? These two videos move me to compare her playing to Wispelwey's wonderful second recording of the suites. Brava!

Is this performed in scorgatura like it was written?
HaMoOhAhA 5 years ago
it seems scorgatura-ish to me.
oeppevnvpeb 4 years ago
Yes, it was performed in scordatura, since the finger positions are more comfortable that way, and to give the originally intended sound.
