As it was explained in Unrest in the House of Light Protoman died in vain because by the ones he wished to save had forsaken him. But this time, he died by his brothers hand to show Megaman that humanity had chosen its own end. He didnt want his brother to die a useless death for people who would not stand grieve his death.

Well, I originally planned to compound this with a "The Stand" AMV setting up Roll getting captured, but the "Ice man rescuing Roll" scene is the action going on underneath the footage of the chorus while they compel Megaman to kill Protoman. If you pay attention, it shows "Ice Man" briefly struggling with the helmeted "Metools" guarding "Roll", running with her to the next room and locking the door behind them, although receiving a fatal bullet wound to the chest.

Of course, the ironic thing is that nothing could have made Proto Man happier than being proven wrong. I think that if the crowd had stood up to fight Dr. Wily, he'd have taken up arms with them, but since they were cowards who would not fight alongside their heroes, he could see no point in doing anything to save them.
