  • Man, way too much talking. I mean, show the chords, and stop bullshitting.

  • Hey! I got to play violin with Glen on Christmas eve here in dublin :) I'd love to learn how to play fitzcarraldo on the guitar, i already have the violin down! Could you maybe try a tutorial of it sometime? Thanks so much for this tutorial! Amazing!

  • just what i was looking for - thank you so much! i liked your story, you're cute, what's not to like? talk all you like.

  • @missticklevids thanks! you're so kind! so happy I could help!

  • Thank you so much. I love this song and everytime I see the performance in the movie, I get chills. Your teaching method is hands down the best I've encountered so far. I've been playing guitar for years. All self-taught and my songs are more or less stuff I've made up. Lately, I've been trying to really learn structure and method and you've really helped out. Do you take requests?

  • @676damian you are so welcome! I'm really glad I could help! I do indeed take requests. i haven't done any videos inl ike a year and I really need to soon. maybe your request will get me going :)

  • dude thanks for the vid! i love all your other videos and your intense case of video a.d.d

  • 3 minutes of..."listen to me, look at me..."...Youtube makes people sucks...

  • @MusashiChanFR did somebody force you to watch it? why are you complaining? i had just met my hero a few dozen hours prior and was kind of excited that I had figured out how to play a song that deeply moves me and I shared how to play it with people. most people are very grateful and I'm happy to help other fans. nobody is making you watch these videos. you make me laugh haha

  • Amazing song, amazing lesson. Thank you very much good sir. Your a boss.

  • @mvazquez39 you are quite welcome and I'm glad to find out that I am indeed a boss :)

  • Fantastic tutorial but would have been better if you didnt waffle on so much and just stuck to teaching the song. Great work, Thanks.

  • thanks man !!

I hate the version of internet u.u

    but yours is great :D

  • Dude you're awesome. Thanks I love this song.

  • @kev2594 no, you're awesome. and you're quite welcome. i obviously also love this song

  • really good play but at the end i mean its not exactly so how you play it. but this end is good too. its only the end which i play a little bit different. but thx dude really nice job :)

  • how yo play with right hand

  • @s1023574800 magic... haha. what you mean? the strumming? if so, I suggest just strumming along with the song and trying to get it down. I would air-strum with my right hand while driving when i didn't live in NYC. that really helps.

  • just a wee small thing.. your missing the little finger on the 4th String 12th String at the start.. And you noticed the other wrong bit, so cool :)

Also, just realised how old this video is, so maybe you noticed the lil finger thing already. good job tho, nice and handy for people. (I'm no professional, just like you, watched the videos incesantly!) lol! Nice job mate, here's hoping Glen keeps throwing gems at us for a LONG time to come!

  • this tutorial is the best i've seen on the internet.

  • Dunno how anyone can dispute that, that's a brilliant tutorial!

Thanks a lot, just make it look 10 times easier

  • Bubba Gump wins!!

    Run forest, run!!

  • Good job mate just what I was looking for thanks.

  • dude, awesome tutorial, it sounds 100% how glen is playing it!!

little much talking in the beginning, but that makes it funny ;)

    rock on!

  • too much talking

  • "Like a women" AHAHAHA great video dude. Thanks!

  • strumming patterns plz.. T.T

    thx a lot..

  • awesome video thanks man!

  • well done man....thanks for sharing

    i met them too...beautiful humans

  • is that a martini guitar....nice tutorial by the way:)

  • @Etniesluva martini? you mean martin? it's a fender stratocaster but I don't have it anymore. I sold it to help pay for my Takamine

  • you see, i learnt this song from the tab you used, on which you posted a link to this video in the comments saying stuff about how the tab was wrong... yet you use that exact same tab...

  • @youngaikidoka Actually after seeing them in concert on Septermber 24th, 2008 I was inspired and spent hours each night for several nights after seeing them live figuring it out by ear and by watching videos of Glen playing it even though I hardly knew how to play guitar at that point. The reason I posted videos like this is precisely because so many tabs are wrong.

  • I went back and found the tab you're talking about. The one on Ultimate-Guitar ver2 tab of Say It To Me Now? Yeah, uhhh, how did I learn how to play this from a tab that is completely different from the way I play it? It's not even in the same tuning and the person says they know that and that they don't want to risk breaking their strings. I learned this song by spending hours and hours on it and didn't just copy some tab that's not even right, thank you very much. Get your facts straight.

  • AWESOMENESS.

  • thanks for these tutorials! Really great, learned falling slowly, now this:)

  • You talk too much...it's really boring

and learn to play in rythm... there is some another tutorials about this song. Yours bring nothing.

  • BUBBA GUMP SHRIMP!

  • haha, i love that shirt. I live in NYC now so it's not so big a deal any more. fun place to eat though

  • hey man cover helped really liked it just try not to be so cocky, but i know you were probably just stoked to knoe it

  • You will ALWAYS have lame comments if you puts cocky titles like "The way Glen Hansard plays it!!", if you know what I mean. So, we will all be Glen Hansard clones if we watch your video and do what you said.

YEah, don't be so pretentious, Ben Afleck-look-alike-but-uglier. Modesty is a quality, his opposite should be a flaw.

  • Ben Aflec?

  • the strumming is a bit inexperienced but a very helpful tutorial. my advice would be that i would guess that a lot of people looking at this video would be beginners so maybe showing how to tune to open e would be useful, just sayin. i liked your chat but would probably annoy me if i was in a rush. and for only 8 or 9 months playing u r an incredibly accomplished guitarist. i already know how to play it i was just interested as u emphasised the right way! so hats off. i liked it a lot

  • Dude your video is awesome. Don't listen to these fools that are criticizing. I enjoyed your anecdote at the beginning; if they didn't they could have easily fast forwarded to where the camera is pointed at the guitar. And also, I like that you use layman terms. I am a casual guitar player, so don't know all the fancy jargon. This was VERY helpful. Thanks again.

  • Thanks, man. I really appreciate it. It doesn't really bother me when people say they don't like it, because I know there are tons of people who are getting use out of it. Out of 12,000 views only getting less than a handful of negative comments is fine with me, haha.

  • Yeah man totally. I actually tried it this morning (it was too late for me to play last night) and it is perfect, sounds exactly right. Great job.

  • yeah man I liked that. helped me out a lot. i know the strumming pattern. it helped me figure out a lot of stuff I didnt know.. didn't know that it was in open E tuning... that helped tremendously.

  • I'm really glad it helped you out

  • 3:47 middle finger on 4th string not 5th.

  • this guy fuckin sucks at explaining he talks way to much and he doesn't use any musical terms and he cant play the song so how the fuck am i supposed to follow this shit ill learn by ear

  • shut the fuck up!

  • I'm sorry but when a person who posts a tutorial on how to play a song the correct way. should, I don't know...be able to play the fucking song. Last I checked Glen Hansard actually plays a comprehensible strumming pattern, so have your friend change the title of his video as to not waste the time of those who actually want to learn this song, rhythm and all. Otherwise I'm sure the negative comments will continue.

  • this guy teaches us exactly how to play it, and even says himself that he hasn't got the rhythm down, so how about you try to imrpove your own technique, take some initiative, listen to the song, and figure out the fucking rhythm yourself before telling someone they're wasting people's time. You're wasting our time with this stupid comment

  • If you read my first comment thats exactly what I did you fucking dumbass. MeeHORE? Da Fuck!

  • if that's what you did then what point is there complaining? lolol you wouldnt get it, meehore is a little inside joke with me and friends :P

  • cause I like being a dip shit haha

  • @meehore hey all you need are the chords and tuning you can figure out the rhythm on your own he made a great video you don't have to be a douche. "Words can bring life or death".

  • @ZackMartinelli I wasn't being a douche? I agree with you, he made a great video!

  • agreed. learn to play the song before you post a tutorial.

  • hey, thanks man, helped a lot, must say gotta cut back on the rambling, do that on a blog or somethin, not here, get right into the lesson, LOL no offence, just advice from an eager guiatr player

  • how can you post this as 'the right way', when you admittedly don't know the strumming pattern? btw, you talk entirely too much!

  • you figure out the strumming pattern... it's not his job to teach you how to strum.. that's rookie... learn it yourself.

  • i don't get it... argght... :(

  • just keep at it. Start slow and get it perfect before you speed it up. It took me a long time to get it right. You'll get it ;)

  • in the beginning he also has his pink on the b (2nd) string on the 12th fret. otherwise great!

  • I'll take a look at it, but I think I remember thinking the same thing at one time before I put this up. In videos it looked like this pinkie was down, but it was just how it was bent because it sounded off when I tried it. I'll try it again sometime when I get some free time though. Thx bulldog

  • thanks man!

  • Hey also remember though that if someones COVERING a song they can play it the way they want. Now if there teaching the song yea people its not cool to be wrong, but what i like to do is sit there and make up my own stuff that way i can find my original sound as an artist.

  • Thanks for posting this--it sounds great, and thanks for going back and updating it. I know that the tuning isn't standard, but could you please post chords anyway so that it's easier to learn the fingering? Thanks! So cool that you got to meet them:)

  • could you post the actual chords? its hard to tell sometimes! cheers

  • well the problem is that it's not in standard tuning so I don't know what the chords would be

  • could you even post like the tab for each part showing chords? or even the chords regardless of tuning?

    cheers

  • great video! i love your shirt:))

  • Oh mY GOSH!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH

  • what is the strumming pleaseeee ?

  • i was just wonderin how much you paid for your takamine that you mentioned at the start of the video. i looked on their website and the ean10c was runnin around $1700. did you find it somewhere for a cheaper price by any chance? by the way excellent video sir, top notch

  • This is great, but in the beginning, when you say 11th fret, 5th string. Do you mean 4th?

  • I think if you just post the chords to the songs, rather than posting your videos it would be much more effective. Good effort tho.

  • hey dude, nice work. you seem like a cool dude, keep up the good work.

  • Thanks man, I really appreciate it :)

  • that first 2 min and 22 secs were ridiculously adorable

  • haha, thanks :)

  • Hello,

You are hilarious. I think GH and MI are the best. Thanks for posting your video. I am trying to learn guitar and this is one of the tunes that I am attempting.

    BR,

    Terry

  • Sir, you are freaking awsome! Thank you very much for taking the time to do this!! HUGE THANK YOU!

  • im playing it now and i dont think the initial chorus bit is right either way they both sound off?

  • It is fine, you just need to hit the right strings... The guitar won't do it for you.

  • YOU WANA KNOW HOW HE PLAYS IT? THIS IS HOW HE PLAYS IT! hahaha you absoulute danoz direct salesman. you gotta slow this shit down man so hard to follow. chek some live versions of this song in germany, schillertheater one so sik

  • you should put that in some text i can print out cuz it sounds awesome, but i am so slow, it would have to watch the video so many times to remember it...

and thats this video that spells it all out.

i can't imagine doing what you did

    way to go

  • it's interesting to watch with the corrections you mention. it's like watching you grow as a guitar player before my very own eyes. very thorough job - excited for you to get better (not that you're bad now)

  • This is a huge compliment to me and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. Thanks a lot, dolore :) Let me know if there's anything I can do for you.

  • This is so awesome. Thanks a ton. This is actually my very first alternate tuning experience with my guitar and with none other than this amazing song....gracias!

  • I'm so glad to help out. You're most welcome

  • Jason: This is great work! Really good of you!

    -Glenn

  • This isn't THE Glen, is it? Haha ;)

  • god damn that tuning. i just snapped a string. i wanna know how many broken strings glen hansard is responsible for with this tuning. jk jk. but it sucks. i cant afford new strings. boo.

  • I bet I can guess which one snapped. It was the G string, wasn't it? haha, it always is the one to snap. The reason it snaps the most is because it's the most tightly wound string so it has the most tension. When you do get new strings, don't settle for anything less than D'Addario. I love them and they last so long and sound fantastic

  • hahaa. love ur shirt!

  • haha bubb gump shrimp

  • dude, this is outstanding.

thank you so much, it sounds exactly like the recording.

but i noticed that he plays it in a different key when he's playing it in the movie.. i thought that was kinda weird.. any thoughts?

  • you gotta make a second video of this and do a right hand tutorial, I cant get that down.

  • there's nothing special that he does with the right hand. It's just a matter of getting the strum pattern down. I've just listened to the song over and over since I saw the movie over a year ago, so it's practically burned into my brain

  • well my family's got a guitar in the living room that serves more as decoration than it did an instrument an I only recently tried to play it so I know nothing about strumming. I dont know if he plucks the E string the strums from the 5th->1st string or what ever, kind of confusing.

  • thank you man it really helped, i just recentley watched the movie and i really liked the songs and wanted to learn some and you helped alot.

If you could please give me there myspace link for tour dates cuz i cant see what it says in your vedio its really small.

  • pretty cool. I am too lazy to ever learn things the official way...but your video makes it really easy. I have been playing for years but shy away from playing covers... But this is actually a great way to learn new chords, song structures, and alt tunings.

I saw them live in Austin...and its obvious they have a passion for what they do. I found myself smiling as I realized I was actually experiencing them LIVE.

    great job!

  • 1:44 LOL !!!

  • happy to know you got that takamine. now just gotta do the vid again!

    hahahha

    cheers mate!

  • hahhahaha i love to watch his videos it helps me figure out hpw to play my guitar

  • This is actually the first comment that I've ever felt moved to make here- but I just have to say THANK YOU for creating this video. I was inspired to teach myself guitar after seeing the movie Once / listening to The Frames. It's only been a couple months, but i promised myself i wouldn't stop until I could learn this exact song! It will be my first. My fingers are actually hurting so much typing this cause I was playing chords all night so that I could finally be good enough for this song!

  • You are so welcome :) I felt the same way and this was my first song of the bunch as well. I'm glad to hear that your fingers are hurting, haha. Keep it up and they'll as tough as you heel in just a matter of weeks, if not sooner. Lemme know what else I can do to help. Merry Christmas!

    Jason

  • thanks for the help man.

  • lol ur videos have that "glen" style like its very familiar to watching glen play a show i saw a video of him playing aastral and his jack kept popping out half way through he rips out the cable runs to the edge of the stage and starts belting it it was awesome how he powered through it showed what a great performer he is you should check it out it was in belfast

  • yea the np 15 was discontinued in 1997 and then ans 10 is the acoustic version the ean 10 c is the acoustic electric the ans 10 sounds awesome playing say it to me now onit

  • CORRECTION: at the end (from 8:00 on), that part is played with only the middle finger down on the 5th string. The index finger is not on the 6th string. After watching more videos of Glen playing, I saw this.

  • hey jason, i just wanted to let you know that my fingers' tips ache so much cuz i've been playin this song for two days by now

but it sounds great, i just need to learn how to sing the "cuz this is what you've waitin fooooooooor..." part.

    thanks for your vid man.

it really helped me a lot.

  • Dude, I'm so glad to hear that your fingers hurt, haha! My do, too. I'm practicing with a friend's acoustic 'cause I'm selling my electric on eBay. The bidding actually ends tomorrow and then I'm planning on buying a Takamine just like the one Glen has used for 20 years! I'm so pumped. Anyways, I'm really glad to hear that I explained it well enough for ya. I'll be posting up some more songs real soon. I've got almost all the songs down from the film, I've just been busy. Talk to ya later man.

  • oh man!!! im so psyched for you lol did u decide to do this after what i said to you? i hope so lol i love helping people get their dream guitar its what i do all day at work lol. you will not be disapointed try using martin strings on it itll sound beautiful. i hope u play it till u have a second sound hole ;)

  • hey, they actually sell the guitar geln uses i worked at a big music store for awhile and its a takamine u should look into it its about 880 cnd for just the electric but believe me it sounds amazing lol it an awesome guitar gets u the "once" sound 100% it would be amazing to see u demoing the songs on it if thats a fender strat (sry salesman me talking here) u could prob get 300 for it atleast then finance the remaining 500 over 12 months with 24% interest annually. its a good way to get things

  • Glen uses a Takamine NP15, right? I hear the closest thing to it is the Takamine EAN10C. Is that right?

  • Hey, did you happen to make tab for this? If so, did you put it online anywhere?

  • Hey man, I'm not a guitar player myself but thanks for the dissection. I've been a fan of The Frames for about four years, so seeing Glen's music come to life on film was amazing. I also got to meet them and the director after an advance screening about a year and a half ago. More than anything I'm glad people are discovering The Frames, they're an amazing band. For me, their holy trinity of albums is Set List, For the Birds, and Burn the Maps. Set list is the live album, absolutely brilliant.

  • thank youuuuu for actually taking the time and putting this up for us. =D

you're awesome for it. XD ♥

  • ...

first to say: thanks for the time you invested to figure it out!

the way you explain is awesome: tell the important things and let some "free space" to get it by yourself (rhytm, ..)and i hear the ~fun~ you had/have with this song - amazing

    great job! thanks a lot!

    kind regards from germany

    Keep up the good work!

  • thanks man, i really appreciate it.

  • Great job, man. That movie could be one of the most underrated films of the past 10 years.

  • Well, it's definitely not underrated. It was the best reviewed film of all last year. It's just not well known or heard of, and it's a shame. It is one of the best movies I've ever seen and getting to meet them a few weeks ago changed my life. I can't put my guitar down and I can't stop thinking of them and listening to their music. I'll post some more videos
