He does not have Klingon blood, but he's French. He must have said something like : "Bordel, répète ça pour voir, sale fils de pute!" Of course, if he was French Canadian he would have said : "Tabarnac! Tu m'le r'diras pas deux fois, ostie d'mange-marde!" Which is a little more colourful and Klingon-like.
I'm 22 and I've started watching Star Trek TNG a couple of months ago. I can't get enough of it. It's like the ultimate series for philosophers and universe enthusiasts.
Okay, so let me get this straight: everyone in Star Trek has a universal translator so they all appear to speak the same language. So when Klingons speak English they are really speaking Klingon. So WTF are they speaking when they speak Klingon??
@YesWeCantaloupe Translators are probably only used for ship to ship comms, and they speak the actual language in person. English, because then you don't need to caption a bunch of Klingon lines.
Universal translators are built into their Combadges. That's how they can understand alien races without holding up a device. How exactly it works isn't explained. A theory is it takes the sound waves, translates the language, then plays it back for them on a frequency only they can hear (this is actually possible today, directed sound waves.)
But in cases like this, it was left out for the scene intentionally. of course.
@Draknfyre It can't be in their combadges, cos it totally still works in all the episodes where they loose the combadges. I don't think they even have a universal translator, they just stuck some babelfish in their ears.
It's specifically described in the TNG Technical Manual, so yes, that's where it's at. The instances where they don't have them is just so they don't have to spend an hour explaining how they figured out the language.
Now Ferengi, they have a universal translator in their ear. The episode "Little Green Men" showed them having to reset it.
@Draknfyre Well I'd wager that Starfleet officers can probably speak Klingon/Romulan or the language of any major power in the quadrant. Diplomacy is a huge part of their job, it would make sense that they should know how to keep negotiations open in case of system failure. I mean, look at DS9, the systems are Cardassian, yet they seem to be able to read information from them without too much difficulty.
The computers are reprogrammed into English. The voice is changed to the standard Starfleet voice. There's even an episode where an old Cardassian virus is triggered, and the computer starts targetting non-Cardassians for attack.
Yes, there are plenty of scenes where they demonstrate alien languages, and of course they would know some, but the universal translator stands as the excuse why they seem to be able to understand everybody. Just like Gene Roddenberry invented
The transporter to save money and time on doing shuttle shots every week, the Universal Translator lets them do an episode without explaining each time how they know the language.
@Henners1991 There are a variety of Klingon Swears which are not translated. Also, Klingons know human languages, so this conversation may have been in English rather than Klingon.
For those wanting translations, there aren't any. The idea is that Klingon swear words are too vulgar to express in our language. However, Mark Okrand tells us when to use them.
taHqeq - "This is a classic Klingon insult. If you use this one, stand back!"
Qu'vatlh - "This is something you would use in times of extreme anger."
ghuy'cha' - "A Klingon might use this after receiving an unsettling communique. It's a lot stronger than the terran, 'Darn it'"
"JUST" to speak Klingon? JUST to speak Klingon??? Excuse me but I think only a proper actor should be speaking it. Would you really want a zombie like Scarlett Johansen or Ryan Reynolds or Ashton Kutcher to be speaking it?! Its impressive that Stewart can speak a language with those "kkgh" sounds with such authority and confidence!
@StigRossi Klingon is a difficult language to master, and I definitely apprieciate any actor who can speak it with authority like Patrick Stewart. What I was saying was that since Mr. Stewart is a trained classical Shakesperian actor, I was thinking that he would see speaking Klingon as beneath him. Of course, he is a professional and I do not know what he thinks!
@Amar7605 I think Patrick Stewart is a great actor with a great affection for Star Trek. I mean this was HIS show... why would he feel it beneath him to speak a little Klingon to make a cool episode?
@Amar7605 And you speak the lies of a taHqeq! [No direct translation. An epithet/invective/insult/etc.]
Vagh ghuy'cha' baQa'! [Vagh: adressing Governer Vagh. ghuy'cha': again, no direct translation. Expletive, usually used when things start going wrong. baQa': General invective.]
Yes but wouldn't it be better learning a language you could actually use? When most people think of Trekkies they think of middle aged computer nerds who sit wholed up in a dark rooms all day doing math problems for the fun of it AND are fluent in klingon. I am none of these things but I love star trek and would consider myself a Trekkie. However it is just a show really and it is not worth twilight-level obsession.
@TheAtheistFuture Yeah, me too. I was so curious, that I actually read all comments and found the source in a hidden comment (it's hidden because of too many thumbs down - surprise, surprise).
@xXColSandersXx Some teenagers want discoball instead of main character and don't want to be forced to think about intelligent story based on plot which is more complicated than "I'm stupid girl (so you, viewer, can identify with me easily) which can not decide which one I want to have between my legs - discoballic metrosexual or tough dumb muscular sport-guy?" - that's why Twilight wins over Star Trek.
@Sirien0neiriS Gee, speaking on the terms of the "Young girl wants between her legs" idea, to carry your metaphore one step further, which is better..> Team Edward, or Team Jacob (Both Pretty boys, both supposed bad asses, both ignorant as fuck).
