Dennis Miller wasn't the Phantom Diner. The voiceover and script was completed by Post-Gazette restaurant critic Mike Kalina (who later committed suicide in 1992). The part of the diner on camera (whose face was never seen, as you know) was played by male college interns, of which I was one.
@soasoas19 Wow, I completely forgot about Mike Kalina. I thought he was great, and was quite shocked when he committed suicide. MALE college interns... not much call for those these days. Somehow, the public would scream that was discrimination. (MALES... need not apply... I've seen it in broadcasting). I'm guessing you work in media... but not broadcasting?
@soasoas19 Wow... didn't see that one coming. LOL That's cool. Funny thing about the entertainment business... once it's in your blood, you can't get it out. I had a program director at a radio station, back in the 90's tell me... "Radio, you can't get it out of your blood because it's a disease". His words, not mine. Even though I no longer do radio, I do my politically incorrect rantings. Kind of like "Reality Life", instead of "Reality TV". Thanks for the input, much appreciated.
I remember the segments, and yeah... Dennis is making big bucks now. I like his sense of humor... way off of center like mine... (but I'm probably a bit more caustic than he is... as you can see if you've checked out any of my other videos on here... as in my videos about China).
As long as broadcasting remains a publicly traded business model on Wall Street, you can kiss these types of shows goodbye. The bean counters say they are not profitable enough. All the U.S. worries about now is profits... not taste and content. Look at Survivor. This show is a turd. but CBS, (the same folks who produced Evening Magazine), continues to air the trash-pit show, along with countless other "reality" shows. Enough of the reality shows already.
Well, I guess TV isn't supposed to be fun these days. Pittsburgh 2-Day was a lot of fun too. I worked nights, so I got to see it a good bit when it was on. Now, reality shows plague the airwaves. (Just what I need in my life, MORE REALITY)? Like living in the new Great Depression isn't enough?
Yes, that is THE Dennis Miller. He worked at KDKA in Pittsburgh as a warm-up guy for the audience for Pittsburgh 2-Day. It helped him to get his start in the biz. (Now if I could just figure out where to get that kind of start on my own). Unfortunately, it's a different time than it was then.
I thought the entire series was yanked across the country because of low ratings...which indicates an audience's interest...sadly, people weren't interested in Evening/PM anymore.

its really hard to find him in the clips, I think they were only one once a week and they were really cheesy, but now he is making big money.

Dennis Miller was on this show as the Phantom Dinner. He used to do food reviews, with humor.

Glad you pointed that out. I always wondered who the Phantom Diner was, and now I know. Thanks for clearing up that mystery !!

I remember watching this show every night with my parents. I was shocked when they canceled it. I wish they'd bring it back.

The reason TV sucks nowadays. No more Evening Magazine. This show was so much fun.

I never watched this show, but it seemed interesting. Mary Roth makes that late '80's/early 90's boxy jacket look good, actually!

I think it was Fred Hanzburger

Evening Magazine. Great show. Too bad the bean counters had to yank it off the air.
