There have been so many great defensive players over the years. It's just not possible to say ONE player is THE best defensive player. You have to do it position by position to an extent.And i don't want to hear about stats.You always have to take into account who guys played against and the era in which they played. Lewis and LT were among the very best ever. As a Steeler fan my team also has had several players who are among the very best ever.

The primary role of outside linebackers is to rush the passer (especially in the 3-4),whereas middle linebackers are in the box, make more tackles and roam in coverage alot more. You can't compare the two, kind of like comparing a small forward to a power forward in basketball, different responsibilities and placement.

Singletary sucks as a coach, but was one hell of a middle linebacker. I am lucky to have seen them both, and have great respect and admiration for Ray Lewis. I am a Ravens fan by the way, but Singletary was the anchor for the greatest defense of all time (85 Bears), which happens to arguably be the greatest team of al time.
