First Genesis song I ever heard, when I was 15.........pukka as man.......fuckin wicked.......44 yrs old now...and it still feels the same to listen to it.......a CLASSIC
First heard this song when I bought their Platinum Collection 3 disc album. When I stumbled onto this track, I'm so happy I actually sat through it and not changed it to the next song. I then went through my folk's record collection and they had ...ATTWT so I put it on and it sounded great. Love this song. Gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it.
Genesis have never been a fashionable band,I've followed them from the early days and they were always slagged off then ,but their music will be loved and appreciated for many generations to come when other bands are long forgotton.
What a superb example of Genesis' artistry.I believe that rather than 'selling out' as Genesis are often accused of doing, they simply went through changes, some caused by line-up changes, and others caused by changing musical tastes and directions. As the individual members of the Band got older, changes in their musical style were inevitable. Just my personal view point.
I could not agree with you more. Being that I'm 26, I was raised on "pop" Genesis. I love them with Peter, Phil, and Ray. Got most of the reissued CDs, except We Can't Dance. Don't like that much. I $200 for my birthday, so I am getting the '70-'75 box set
Go listen to the Lamb lies down on broadway and then tell me "Duke" is fantastic, However if you have already done so then I guess your very lenient as to what constitutes artistic integrity
Music is music and Genesis will always be Genesis, weather or not it is prog or pop Genesis. Genesis pop was just as inventive as Genesis prog. They did not sound like any1 else in either of those musical fields
This song is amazing. I love the optimistic message in it, and not that alone, it has such great vocals. (I'm not putting out any other instruments in it, it's just the vocals are some of the best I have ever heard). This song's my personal favourite Genesis song, however I like some of there others alot.
Just don't understand all the negative waves. Been a fan since the early seventies. Graet post, Great song, Good L.P.. Yeah I love the older stuff but then again, I also love this song and many more until abacab. That to me was when things just got to comercial and stagnat.I personal think Mike played some of his best Guitar on this L.P. Thank you for posting this song. scribble
Some of the greatest bands ever were/are British. This is coming from a stupid American. I think bands should start doing LSD again and lay off the heroin. Don't try to tell me Phil Collins didn't do LSD, he stared at carpets for 4 hours straight, yeah he did.
I kinda agree. Not the best song from this album, but still pretty damn good! A lot of Genesis "fans" think the band sold out with this one. I disagree. This sounds like a typical second Genesis track(Time Table, Fly On A Windshield, Entangled, and One For the Vine), but shorter
Beautiful song! Always liked this song. Brings back memories for me when I first rented this album from my library about 14 years ago. I ended up getting the CD later.
The " &fmt=18 " stereo trick works on this video. It worked for me.
lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you - flipping fantastic -17 years old and in love - make the most of all you still have coming to you

One of my favorite songs of all time. I listened to this over and over when I was 10 years old I think it shaped me as a person. what a song! Thanks for posting.
"One of the few songs on ...And Then There Were Three (1978) that makes the album not a waste of money."
How can you say that in the description? Personally, I thought this was the best album that Genesis did as a trio. This album probably has the best balance of songs out of all that Genesis did. Fast songs, slow songs, moderate songs and so on. What songs did you like off of ...And Then There Were Three, and why? And why didn't you like the rest? Just curious.
For me personally, I was blown away by both Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. To me, they were both masterpieces, like listening to a whole symphony. I don't think it's so much that And Then There Were Three is bad, just that directly after what I would consider two monumental albums, it's lacking a certain 'something' for me. I listen to the former two and have an emotional experience, and I listen to this one, and I sing along. Just two different experiences, I suppose.
The way I put it probably is a bit harsh though, I'll give you that. I do get a similar feeling with this song that I did with the other albums, that's why I posted it, it just isn't quite as album-wide on this one. Follow You, Follow Me is a fun song to sing, and I quite like it, but it just doesn't give that certain experience that some of their other work on TOTT and W&W (God I don't want to be one of the people that uses acronyms...) does. Not to say that those albums are perfect either...
Fair enough. Also, I would've preferred the album started off with The Day The Light Went Out instead of Down And Out and I would've added Vancouver right after Burning Rope to close out side one. ...And Then There Three sounds a lot like Wind And Wuthering without as much variety in instrumentation. I really do miss the Mellotron. But it sounds like Genesis is really trying for some of the complexities of the previous work, even though they just became a trio. That's also why I like it. :)
Whoever gave me a thumbs down, I want to clarify what I really mean. I don't hate the song Down And Out, I just prefer The Day The Light Went Out over the other. I also never wanted to replace Burning Rope with Vancouver. Vancouver would be added to make up the time differential with the first track replacement. I'm also taking into account that CDs didn't exist back in 1978-1979, so to preserve album continuity, side 1 had to be longer than side 2. So turn your frown upside down! lol! :)
mate you do not have to answer to anyone, you are your own man, stand up to the blow & make the most of all, the danger's past you need not fear the icy blast again :O)) the internet is full of sad lonely little bullies who live to criticise, I enjoy trashing the trashers, you say and think whatever you want :O))
lol! I really think that I was just misunderstood and I was just making myself clear. That's why I was being nice. "There must me some misunderstanding..." XD
BILDO1977: Please forgive me. I gave you thumbs down, not inttentionally. I have shaky hands and hit the wrong button.. I did it just now too. Tell me how to reverse it.
Sounds more like common keyboard or synth work to me. I could be wrong about that. BTW, nobody, and I mean NOBODY was more adept at handling a mellotron than Tony Banks. If Tony was going to be knighted, that alone should be a good enough reason! :)
No, it's 'tron strings on Many Too Many and choir on the Lady Lies. Are you excited about the '70-'75 box set as I am? I got $200 for my birthday, so I will be getting it @ Best Buy
Hmm... maybe they replaced the tapes, or cleaned the insides too well! lol! I'm planning on asking for the '70-'75 box set as a Christmas gift. I'll save my pennies and buy a good gift for someone else. 'Tis better to give... especially when you'll get the '70-'75 box set! XD
I love this album all the way through. The stereo remix has improved it greatly. also love the stuff they did with Pete and the 1st 2 with Phil. Hell, I love everything by Genesis, except We Can't Dance. Each album sounds different from the 1 before
We Can't Dance was a more mature sounding Genesis. Musicly, the standouts on that album imho were No Son Of Mine, Driving The Last Spike, Dreaming While You Sleep, and Fading Lights. I think the rest are still listenable at least. I do have both box sets and I'm planning to get the last one. I wish Genesis would give the same treatment to all of their live albums. I would be looking forward to Seconds Out the most. Best live album Genesis released, at least in the U.S.A.
Just about all of the songs on Seconds Out sound superior live than the original album recordings. When I heard the album cut versions of the songs, I remember being a little let down! This was the first taste of old school Genesis I ever got. My dad has it on vinyl, and he can't remember how he got it! I'm just glad I had the opportunity to discover it. There's some songs from Seconds Out on YouTube; Squonk, and Dance On A Volcano come to mind. Buy Seconds Out. You won't regret it. :)

"Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you,
Make the most of all you still have coming to you, [or]
Lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you,
Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on your knees
Let me live again, let life come find me wanting.
Spring must strike again against the shield of winter.
Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me,
Telling me the danger's past, I need not fear the icy blast again."
