I know how a violin works, and she isn't hitting a single note from which you hear, shes only pulling her stick quicker when the music goes quicker....
@BananerLaner ummm... how can it not be live? when i saw here she did these slidy thingies at the beginning. if it were just playback you wouldn't hear that. it's her playing with playback underneath.
@MrBrennstoff I can't really tell... But compared to the other songs on Laced-Unlaced album, this one is (relatively) easier to play than the others. At least from my point of view
@Sourcy14 I agree, sadly. Now her shows are more burlesque-ish, and kind, losing flavor. Maybe shell do something new this year, who knows. I saw her last year and it was still amazing. I dont know how things will seem in the future.
I play violin and can tell that she's playing on this for sure. Does she have backing tracks? Of course she does. It wouldn't sound right if she didn't. If you listen to the original, the piece calls for two violins that harmonize on certain parts so if there is no second player then thats what she has to do. Is she playing the second violion part rather than the lead? Probably so because it's cleaner and easier to do live.
Too bad she never plays Unlaced live =( When I went to her concert she didn't either and later on she played another song ( I think it was face the wall but I don't remember that well) and that was actually live so I could hear the difference. However, I am quite curious of the reason. Maybe because is too much background noise to play it live? I love her nonetheless though, and she doesn't playback everything like some artists do :/
@SliverofInfinity then you are pretty bad in music interpitation. since guitarist match these speeds with about 2 years practice. so a violinist who has been playing since before she was 10 or something could do this while balancing on a ball and talking to some1 at the same time...
@dodo4hire Ain't it obvious... in a guitar like in a piano you just have to worry in the articulation of fingers, you don't have to worry about the quality of your sound or the tuning because the instrument has already solved that for you, NOT THE CASE OF VIOLIN, your tuning has to be super accurate because violin is not an instrument that uses equally temerped tuning ( which means C# is not the same than a Db) and to have a decent sound and decent tuning you have to practice very slow...
@feydust or people could just mark the required positions for the notes.
either way, not connected to speed, even tough you have to know those notes, and for some dumbass reason violins make the Db and the C# diffrent. those notes are achievable on guitar. you just need to work a little harder by bending the strings or using a trem bar. and since guitar has a more evolution in style, mastering the guitar therefore is harder since violin can be mastered with a classical aproach.
@dodo4hire Every instrument MUST be mastered with a classical aproach, since classical training is the one that gives you the proper technique to make your performance rich; yeah Picasso innovated the plastic expression through cubism but before that he already painted like Rembrandt; look at our mistress she plays metal stuff with her violin but before that she had to play Mozart and Bach and then Brahms and Tchaikovsky, we do with our little bear hand what you do with your trem bar...
@feydust i mastered guitar and singing by not doing the classical approach (even tough i now sing counter tenor/tenor/soprano in my school choire, depending on who is in the minority, and guitar mastered by ear/tabs of metal and rock music, never in my guitar carreer has classic come forth in my learning stages, even tough i play a little bit of neoclassical metal at times, but just for satire.)
@littlefart123 ok. cuz my teacher in choir was mega stressing the fact that girls are never tenor because a bunch of women in the church choir claim to be tenors XD
@dodo4hire cleaning every single note, exaggerating the articulation so you internalize it and constantly checking your tuning because in violin a finger misplaced milimiter (specially in a slow note) screws everything for you, and when you finally accomplish to play a piece with a decent sound and tuning you still have to work a lot in giving a nice interpretation to the piece and of course archiving the proper speed... so there you have it.
@SliverofInfinity: It can't this is quite obviously an overdubbing. Which is a shame, because I know this woman can play some mean violin without studio assistance, and I don't understand why she would do this. Studio? Desperation? Album support? Who cares. Go listen to the album. Anyone who plays an instrument knows for a fact that it is quite impossible for this to be a true performance.
@CallingCrowe its called double stopping, its where you play two strings at once on the violin, yes its perfectly do-able - you can play two different tunes by double stopping if youve got fast enough fingers... which, i think, is what EA does on a few of her amazing violin songs
It certainly is. A handful of her bowstrokes are shorter than that in the album version, and the part before 3:00 is a tad off, as well as the fact that you can hear another violin part accompanying hers that's not in the album throughout parts of the song.
i can't believe that she didn't actually play this song...it was just the song going lalala and emilie was just faking it. I think that's the only song in which she does that but still...:( me likey that song so much
I noticed she douse this alot with this song. But I take it as how when you see a live show some singers won't put 100% into the vocals because they prolly have a show everynight for the next several weeks/months.
It might just kinda be a pain to try to do this on the violin everynight for several weeks straight.
but she had to play it at least once in her life, i mean, how else do you think it was recorded? BEsides, just the speed and complicated notes she hits, you gotta throw her some slack =/
Dude, there are some really cool musicians that play their 8 minute solos live. But I'm not gonna argue about it since I have homework and a test to study for.
I know you posted this hella long time ago, but I don't think it's fake, she clearly played 2 offnotes at 3:00-3:02, she was most certainly plugged in and playing it. Besides it would be a disgrace if she couldn't play this after 20+ years of playing violin IMO.
dude it did sound like she wasn't playing at all. I know she's played violin since forever (that's why i <3 her) but you live music is different than the one u listen on your cd player/ipod/whatever. Besides, this guy told me that she didn't play unlaced live, only face the wall.
I'm just saying if it was just playing a recording it wouldn't have randomly played 2 wrong notes. It could be fake, but I just don't think it is. /shrug
a really good fucking artist! thanks to her I start to pay more aatention to Shakespeare and to motivate me finish a story I'm writing! oh and also to record my poetry :B

Violin doesn't use a pick. That's a pretty huge difference. I play both, and trust me, quick stuff like that is much MUCH harder on the violin.

@mpbsmithaa last time i checked 1 stroke = 50 notes for EA.
and i have to pick like 30 times for 50 notes.... so present your comeback.
