@DurpenHeimer Starker and Rostropovich are both technically great, but the thing is, Rostropovich knows the parts that needs to be emphasized most. That makes them uneven.=D
@DurpenHeimer Starker is good, no doubt. They both have great technique. But Rostropovich gives emphasis to certain parts of pieces that makes it more moving and more stunning. That shows that he is more of an artistic. And, that, for me, makes the difference.
i feel as though the cello is neglected.. like how un popular it is how people choose the violin over the cello and they don't understand the beautiful music and sounds that can come from the cello.. it's quite sad really :/
@Claytonius170 True-che. But when I was six (Only around a decade ago -That sounds long.. :/) Everyone did the Violin whilst I'm literally the only one playing the Cello. And they only had the 3/4 size so it was HUGE on me. I find the Violin irritating, to be honest. The Cello sounds much nicer.. I'm getting off topic. The Violin (unfortunately) is still over popular then the Cello. Which makes no sense because the Cello sounds so much.. more.. beautiful (In my opinion atleast)
Also, you can see him playing beyond the fingerboard on the high notes (above A5). No artificial harmonics. That, boys and girls, is referred to as Pretty Fucking Pro.
If this were a race, Rostropovich would be the first by far. Poor pianist I´m sure that she´s happy beacause the piece lasts only 2 minutes. The elves will be scared after that
@TheBowbros3 I was dumbfounded when I heard this and at the same time amused at the hyperactivity of it. Your comment about elves and coffee was hillarious and I laughed for a several minutes...thanks
As someone said before, Rostropovich isn't playing so fast that he's losing notes--his playing is extremely clear, so if you're listening very carefully you'll catch every note.
However, I'm unsatisfied by this performance. The technique is amazing, of course, but he plays it so fast that it's less "Hey, here's a wonderful piece of music by Popper" and more "BEHOLD THE SIZE OF MY **** MORTALS, WHICH IS EVEN LARGER THAN MY CELLO " More about Rostropovich showing off than something enjoyable.
@13CBS Sometimes, you get a crowd who could care less about the piece, and they only want to see some insane skills. This may be the case, either way, he still has the right to show off since he's extremely amazing.
@13CBS ofcourse, this peace is basically written for cellist to show off :D isnt it great that such a great cellist atleast once shows people what he can do on the cello? would you want dirk nowizky to always just score 2 point throuws because 3 pointers would show his skill?
il genio musicale sta nel non mostrare assolutamente al pubblico la difficoltà del brano che si sta eseguendo. rostopovich pare si stia facendo una passeggiatina per i boschi :D
@chrispidicello You do realize that saying this about Rostropovich's performance is like saying that Van Gogh used too much color on his paintings, right
He stands on the car and taunts, "You primitive screwheads! This is my BOOM STICK. Who want's some?!" So did he stomp on it, or did he find the harmony above the harmonies? Given the subject of elves, perhaps a deliberately narcissistic interpretation, complete with muted duo partner, is appropriate after all. My only complaint is that the piece is then not too fast, but too short. To complete the taunt, he could have added his own bridges to make it an act of truly challenging arrogance.
Been playing cello since I was three. This song is a p*ssing contest for cellists, and this version of it is the equivalent of that guy who just painted Michaelangelo's Sistine chapel on the back yard from the balcony with his twelve-inch equipment.
In other words everyone acknowledges that no one can reasonably be expected to beat that, and the competition becomes for second place.
i love it how the pianist who is just playing a few chords has someone to turn the pages for her, but rostropovich just bosses the whole thing with no music whatsoever.
@gcjacks947 You're a moron - this piece is meant to be played at tempos like this, as that's what it's meant to be - a show piece!! Plus he's dead, and has been since 2007, so that comment really wasn't very appropriate!
The one who said that some notes got lost because of the speed, may not be a good listener (no offense). Due to the speed some notes got too shortly played, that's called acciatura, not lost notes. My opinion...
What we call the Rostro-pin in is the bent end pin he uses to lay his cello more flat without stretching out the end pin too long (even though it's invented by Paul Tortelier). I don't know how it's called in English. The more you tilt the cello, the brighter the sound gets.
@MickCorgi It's the Stahlhammer end pin. Oh, and the sound doesn't change AT ALL when you use the bend end pin. I asked my teacher and he said it doesn't affect the sound in any way. He used it before.
@MickCorgi Well, I use Stahlhammer. But Rostropovich doesn't. He used to use detachable bent pin. Stahlhammer is retractable. As for pin itself, it doesn't change the sound. But the angle of cello top against listeners surely changes the sound. The rockers use this angle change against the guitar amp to control the feedback.
@stupidstorm I may make a project of it soon when I have some free time to record his performance here and slow it down for you. Some of the notes are a half-tone off or more.
@Celloman4044 omfg, some parts are not even on the fingerboard anymore and he plays fuckin insanly fast, try to play it perfectly clean like that, i wanna hear that recording you genius
@Philboy50 1) I never said I could do it better. 2) You're presenting it as though you know for certain why he played it at that speed. Maybe he played it so "fuckin insanly fast" because he knew that people like you would not be able to recognize all the notes he murdered. Conclusion: In actuality, I am not trying to say this is what I think. I am only trying to present the opposite opinion to which are you so vehemently opposed. Your anger doesn't make my points any less true.
@Celloman4044 ofc at the speed he plays it some notes get a LITTLE bit lost, but for that tempo he actually plays pretty acurat. if you own the notes and have fast eyes you can check that yourself.
@Philboy50 The cello arrangement is actually on IMSLP, and I followed it along - he does a very fine job of it. Can't link you to it, just search Elfentanz on the site and it's the second result.
