This is just all so stupid--- like surfers fighting over a great surfing spot. The new girl gang wants a share of the same waves. Rediculous people! One side pissed off because they've had the spot for centuries. The new chicks whine, provoke, point the finger ---"they are mean and won't share!" Grow up people. Don't make another stupid holy war on earth!
I feel sorry for the nice policeman who has to arrest Anat. He's thinking, "oh $h*t, why did I get this assignment!?" This is Israel, not America. Honestly, the singing doesn't draw ones attention to G-d, but to Anat trying to buck thousands of years of tradition, American style. There are plenty of avenues for women to sing, pray, study Torah in Israel in peace. You are not going to change the cheif Rabbi's minds on many issues by these gatherings. Shalom.
Pharisee's and Sadducee's they will make a law that will stop Christians form even looking at it.Remember religion killed the Christ.Did it not say that they that think that Dogs and women are the same? The word of God never changes
These people are not stupid, they are praying together at holly place. And yes maybe some of whom participated in this service were Americans but even so being an American Jew gives you the same right to pray with all Jews around the world. Women of the Wall is uniting everyone together, if you noticed in the video even men were singing along with the women.
these people are so stupid_here's a great idea have a bunch of American kids most of whom don't speak Hebrew march around thinking they are these like American missionaries and then try to fight Israeli cops, and then freak out when someone falls down two stairs. The woman got arrested because she broke the law, not because she was carrying a Torah
This is crazy! There's no place in the Bible that says women should not carry a Torah, should not wear a Tallit! or a yamaka. The religious right in Israel are making the rules to their liking.
The arrest of Anat Hoffman conjures up images of Nazi Germany. If the rest of the world sees Jews treating other Jews this way, does it give them permission to do the same? We must set the example to create an environment of tolerance and respect for al beliefs, particularly peaceful efforts to participate in the Jewish way. It is time for fundamentalists to become enlightened, that we may all practice our faith and live in shalom. Repairing the world, tikkun olam, begins with each of us.
As an Orthodox (Boy, do I hate that label), when I first heard about this piece of news, I was truly disheartened. We live in a time when we must find a way of unifying ourselves, and yet at the same time be able to express our unique differences. I do not condone what was done. Questions: What is a Jew? How can we display our relationship to G-d? At what point does this display go too far? Who decides what too far is?
I don't know what to say to our acquaintances, Conservative and Reform, who have converted to Judaism - acquaintances who are among the most ardent members of their shuls and who often lead services and chant Torah.
If Israel becomes a hardline, primitive religious state, akin to those found in so many Islamic countries, I can no longer support or advocate for Israel. I can no longer encourage America's financial support of Israel. I can no longer plan on visiting Israel again. If Israel becomes a hardline, primitive religious state, akin to those found in so many Islamic countries, I can no longer support or advocate for Israel.
this is disgusting. the anarchism cannot continue. this is not the solution to fix religious inequality. there are many more intelligent, mature means of attaining their end. i continue to implore WOW to consider defeating the orthodox at their own game. they must outmatch them in the skills of interpreting the torah and, most importantly, PROVE to the orthodox why WOW is right. until that day, these absurd and unjust actions with continue.
@jonnynewburgh - So, Your position is that Israel is a theocracy and that its rules are set by the Rabbinate? I say no. The State of Israel was founded as a democracy with rules determined by an elected Knesset
@DelrinFred no, i never said that. i said that i do not condemn that which WOW desires to change but i do condemn their means of achieving such justice. there are more agreeable means that they could instead choose.
Frenchpiano85 - it is the government of Israel, not the WOW - that has made this into a political issue. It is the government that has made Liberal Jews into second class citizens. I am a proud diaspora Jew, but find it increasingly difficult to support the government of Israel.
Well Done!!! I am very proud to see such courage and leadership. Progressive Jews need to take action and support Women of the Wall. We need to create an Israel for ALL JEWS. Those who don't believe in making political statements, don't know their history and to whom they are indebted for their freedom. Thank goodness there are such courageous, admirable ppl in this world who will not stand for discrimination. I'm gonna be there next Rosh Hodesh!
as a liberal Jew i am disappointed in WOW-to me liberal Judaism is about each person being equal-NOT MAKING A POLITICAL STATEMENT-this organization knew that by bringing a Torah to the woman's side of the wall would lead to an arrest because it has happened before-the way the Torah was treated at the end of this is despicable and even worse the using of tefillah as a political statement is beyond words the worse possible way to relate to G-d-this is a sad day for liberal Judaism
This demonstrates that "Jewish authenticity" has been hijacked by the haredim and internalized by the Police. I say we take it back - fund Masorti Kehilot and call this out for what it is - bigotry and fundamentalism as a bastardized twisted Judaism.
Isn't orthodoxy great!

If the question was halachic, those women should be arrested for wearing kippot, only, because it's a man's accesoire.
There's NO ruling that prohibits women to don tefilin, to wear talit as a scarf (as they did) or to touch, read and carrying a sefer torah.
Being not obliged of a commandment doesn't mean that it's prohibited.
KOL HAKAVOD, ANAT!!!

Modern Israel was created as a place for ALL JEWS!
It's only now that the right wingnut Jewish Taliban is being allowed to enforce their brand of Judaism on ALL the JEWS of Israel. Sound Familiar???
This must stop and it must stop now!
The WOW are celebrated by the vast majority of the world's Jewry.
