I can´t believe this is a scene they intended to use, if you see the water CGI it´s nothing like the rest of the film, like it´s made home production, even the water splashes before anyone hit´s it..

I think it´s just for storyboard use or something

They are signals so that the enemy doesn't know what they're planning. I'm pretty sure that those were just made by them though. I thought it would've been cool to see more of those, cause it shows all the time they've spent together as friends and war buds.
