I see many people who write in English then tell them not to stop in discovering Dixit Dominus will be delighted by Winfred, Handel was my first discovery to the perfect music touched by God, greetings from mexico
My favorite opera since I was in college (in the more recent dark ages). Gorgeous music wonderfully sung (even without the da capos...). A young Dame Sutherland and, wonders of wonders, you can understand her diction!
Well if they disliked this they are imbeciles! The musical forces Handel could put together were severely limited. Genius triumphed I'd say on that day!
Opera Atelier is presenting Acis & Galatea this fall with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. I'm not sure if we'll be able to put up entire clips like this one on Youtube, so you should come see the show live! It starts October 30, 2010 and you can find more info on our website. We use period instruments and authentic Baroque gestures inspired by essays, paintings and sculptures from the period.
Tayott, I surely agree with you. I love G.F.Handel. Most know him because of his "water music" or his "Messiah," but he created such beautiful music until it is impossible to choose which is best. But if you like this Acis and Galatea, you will love "St. Martin in the field" version. It will bring you to tears.
Händel called this English-language work a MASQUE and used a quite different style and form than he would for one of his operas. He never meant this work to be staged (although it commonly is, nowadays) or to be sung by the kind of singer that he invariably engaged for opera.
all i can say is this music is so deeeelightful...to the fullest extent...it's so light and pleasing...you can't help but smile at the start of "oh the pleasure"
I checked the sound with "Audacity" - a free digital audio editor - and did realise that the upload is in Mono. However, the sound is very transient for my ears and I love it very much.
Was this Handel's predecessor to "the arrival of the queen of Sheba"? Some parts sure doe resemble it.

I must say that this is breathtaking music. I need to listen to classical music, and in particular Handel, more often.

This was Händel's most played piece during his life.

This choir is awful. However, the orchestra sounds great!

This is NOT an opera.
Händel called this English-language work a MASQUE and used a quite different style and form than he would for one of his operas. He never meant this work to be staged (although it commonly is, nowadays) or to be sung by the kind of singer that he invariably engaged for opera.

quit crying. It is considered an opera or operetta of sorts...what does it matter anyway... its some of handel's best work

I wasn't familiar with this work of Handel's. I found it while looking for "Messiah," etc. You're right, it's sublimely lovely. Thanks!

true, but I don't really care much for the libretto, so dry and boring.
