There is a six year difference between the release of Dragon's Lair (1983) and Skull and Crossbones (1989). I do not recall seeing a single S&B cabinet being converted into the laserdisc based Dragon's Lair. Not probable at all. Dragon's Lair II was barely even released so why would there be an abundance of DL parts for conversion?
@evidence7 One of us is missing something here, prob me. My research suggested that operators used Dragon's Lair cabinets and converted them to S&C. The original S&C cab used the same shape marquee and control panel as DL. It was cheaper to order a conversion kit from Atari than a whole S&C machine. (Remember Atari manufactured DL cabs in Europe.) Many DLs had long died or failed by 1989 and the cabs were valuable. DLII did not use the same cab shape as DL and Space Ace.
@MAMECADE This version of Skull & Crossbones is a lot better than the NES version Pat The NES Punk reviewed on his YouTube Channel ( and on RetrowareTV) since this used 3 buttons like Sega Genesis and the NES had only used 2 also Games Database has better photos of the game's cabinet and other Arcade cabinets. Also you need to tell people to get Xpadder to covert PC Keyboard to PC Controller buttons for your MAMECADE Website since using a controller just works better than a Keyboard.
@MAMECADE Just make sure you get Peter Pack Rat on MAMECADE, I think my brother made a recent comment on your video of his favorite game PPR from Showbiz. Also you may want to setup MAMECADE for people to play 2 or more players online from different computers and FreePlay mode in the dip switch settings since I hate inserting virtual MAME coins. I'll send you a link to Games Database and some other interesting Arcade sites you can use for photos and ideas for games.
@OldSchoolNYCGamer Yeah, I agree. there are a lot of games that uses the side scrolling beat 'em up system. But S&C does it with style. Glad you enjoyed the video.
You are one of the best and most orginal gamee reviewrs Ive seen here on youtube in a while, youve done with your channel what Gamester81arcade shouldve done, Keep it up.
@vintagevideogamegeek I don't know if I share your sentiment on playing this over Dragon's Lair. I've got a huge place in my heart for Dirk, Daphne and Singe. But S&C is a hell of lot of fun. I haven't tried the NES version yet.
in the new version, the levels could be played in any order, ala megaman.

I didn't realise the game was so rare due to cannibalisation. Interesting fact. Nice!

Great video John, I LOVED this game and played the hell out of it when I was in High School. The way Atari did this classic is so under ratted. = )

Cool episode! I love the animation in this game - quite a decent number of frames used here. Great colors and sound.
Arcade hall owners cannibalizing this cab for illegal Dragon's Lair installments is just insane. A rare cab...

@markvergeer Thanks Mark, yeah that hits home for me because I own a Dragon's Lair Cabinet.

I've played this in the arcade and it was fun as hell. I'd rather play this over Dragon's Lair any day. The NES port of this really sucks though!
