Taekkyun is so enjoyable to watch. Really just very graceful. I've heard people make similar comments about Chinese styles, but I enjoy how this has the grace of a tai chi and the power of a gung fu. Beautiful.

The dancing part is about being aware of your body in every second, keeping your muscles and your mind warm and calm. You force your rythm at your partner and suddenly break it to strike.
taekkyun was developed from traditional dance and subak, due to the many mauntains in the areas it started the people had eceptionally strong lag muscles thats why taekkyun is most about kickin or "pushin" and grappin.. and the reason that thees guys arent punchin is because you cant win a match on it, you win it by putting a kick to the head or make your oppenent fall
If you can block a kick you should be able to block a punch I assume. Some of the moves in the opening demo "kata" look like they could be hand blocks and a few strikes.
In Korea the hand was very important(writing,makin stuff ect ect..) And punchin bare knuckles injurys the hands and a injured hand cant write or creat things, so in korea a gentlemen or nobleman fought using mostly with the leg, also using the legs takes more "skills" then with the hands and is a sign that person is learned man and not a street thug. thats just one of many reasons koreans rather kick then punch.
Not to mention your legs are the strongest part of your body. You can kick someone much harder than punch. In a war I think this style would be great, and I mean like a long time ago with swords. If you have a sword or weapon you dont need hand techniques anyway, but you can still kick people =D With Taekkyun you can use just about every move from your martial art, but put a sword in your hands, its still the same. Even if it gets to close for a kick or sword, you have grappling =D
thats why its not practical for the modern world, if you lived in an ancient society with swords, thats why only gangsters and special forces guys learn this stuff, it's really hard on the joints and you can really hurt yourself bad if you're not sufficiently trained enough for the twisting motions in the joints and the ligaments
Its not practical for you, but in most countries no one can buy a gun, they will attack you with their body to rob you or whatever, if you go to Europe or asia, no one has a gun, but you always have your body, and people in modern times get attacked all the time so this stuff makes lots of sense to learn... Not to mention some people just like it, makes them strong, good ability and some people just enjoy it. I enjoy it, I also like learning the history behind it as well, its interesting...

imo this has to be one of the toughest martial arts to learn. Because of the grappling moves, like judo or akido, you cant seem to wear pads. TKD is the korean version of tae-bo. i'd doubt that any navy seal or marine will back up tkd unless its the korean navy seal/marines.
Most TKD places in the states r comercialized.. they will give u a black belt in less than 2 yrs and take money from you in exchange for the belts. LOL they teach yo how to fight in tornements at best in the states. The reason? Yanks quit so freaking easily when it gets a lil hard. So they have to go easy and teach ppl how to dance like TKD.
either way, I have fought other students at competition from around the world, even a korean from korea. that looks nice, although one thing i dont understand is how they whip up with one of their legs and then use the same leg for a kick, i cant imagine how you could get anystrength behind it let alone how hard it would be to keep your balance, but its not like they got it right on their first try, with this or anything it requires time and effort, the music sounds good

You know what... it seems common that a culture hides things through the form of dance or music when under persecution. Thats really interesting. I'll have to bring that up in my history class. By the way, I'm really interested in this form of TK. Any studios in US that anyone knows of. P.s. I hope it includes wrestling, cause they sure know how to take to the ground alot.

This is unbelievable ignorant. First of all, Korean is not even of the same language family as Chinese. It's roots are closer to Mongolian. Chinese is an agglutinating language. Koreans actually have their own alphabet, and writing system they DID NOT grow out of China.

Certainly China is the strongest influence over Asia period, but it's not the be all and end all. Present Korean martial arts systems are a mix of Korean, Chinese, and Japan but they majority of them are indigenously and distinctly Korean. There has been cross cultural diffusion both ways.

imo this has to be one of the toughest martial arts to learn. Because of the grappling moves, like judo or akido, you cant seem to wear pads. On the other hand, because it is Taekkyun, youre allowed to kick. Ever get kicked in the face with a spinning back kick? trust me.. you wont remember much of it except the shrieking pain when you wake up from your coma.

Along with that, Taekgyeon's standard movement does not mean it's a passive martial art. On the contrary, it's more aggressive (if I could say that), the movement is there to decieve you. Clearly, it succeeded. A true master could end the fight with a simple flick of his wrist striking an opponent in the neck with the backside of his fingers/hand.

Many REAL Korean martial arts have to do with the power & speed in their wrist. At the same time, they through their whole body in a quick movement into that strike. The power flows through the arm & wrist ending with the fingers/hand.

TKD is the korean version of tae-bo. i'd doubt that any navy seal or marine will back up tkd unless its the korean navy seal/marines.

Most TKD places in the states r comercialized.. they will give u a black belt in less than 2 yrs and take money from you in exchange for the belts. LOL they teach yo how to fight in tornements at best in the states. The reason? Yanks quit so freaking easily when it gets a lil hard. So they have to go easy and teach ppl how to dance like TKD.
