Killing a police animal or officer should be death sentence.. period.
I could understand that criminals try to get the dog lose due to fear or whatnot and subsequently the dog may die like this case throwing it in traffic but it should still count as 2nd/3th degree slaughter.

5 years is really harsh for killing a cop dog but I do think there should be some sort of punishment for killing one. I mean the dog was trained to attack people and unlike the cop the dog didn't choose to be there

We create the definition in through society and laws. And if the law says these are police officers, they are. Cops can use dogs to instigate reasons to murder suspects. If there is a stand off (prior shooting isn't even required), just release the dog to charge the suspect (to break the standoff, punish noncompliance), suspect kills dog in defense, cops murder the suspect because "weapons fired". If the suspect lives, now he gets an extra automatic 5 year prison sentence for defending himself from an animal attack.

@XZohar123 Your right, it is not up to me, and that does not mean it's up to the courts or the police to define. The laws also have required code of conduct, and if the dogs are defined as police officer. and there is no seperate code of conduct for them, guess what. The law is the law is the law.
Either way, survival instinct is instinct, and if unjustly attacked by a police dog, and unable to control ones own instinct, the dog will often end up getting killed.

So by these guys' reasoning, if youre running and a police officer tackles you and it hurts you, you're natural reaction should be to throw the officer off? These dogs don't "eat you" or "maul you." They bite onto your arm, usually the one with the weapon, and pull you down. The more you resist, the worse it is for you. Dogs aren't as stupid as you think. We can train them to be very specific with what they do.

Either it's a dog or it's a police officer. If it's a police officer, then it must be held up to a reasonable code of conduct as a police officer. If a police officer tries to bite me in the groin, he is going to get a knee to the face. If he attacks me without first making an effort to get me to verbally stop, then the survival instinct will kick in.

We create the definition in through society and laws. And if the law says these are police officers, they are. As far as the dog, it is just a tool like any other the police have. No different than their guns, their squad cars, or their police uniforms, other than the fact that it is a biological tool. Cops can use dogs to instigate reasons to murder suspects. If there is a stand off (prior shooting isn't even required), just release the dog to charge the suspect (to break the standoff, punish noncompliance), suspect kills dog in defense, cops murder the suspect because "weapons fired". If the suspect lives, now he gets an extra automatic 5 year prison sentence for defending himself from an animal attack.
Corrupt tactics should not be reinforced with more corrupt laws to "legitimize" them.

The guy in this case didn't do anything wrong (other then what they were arresting him for that is)... if their intent is that you should go to jail because the force used protecting yourself from said dog kills it... no guilt.

I live within 5 miles of the crime scene, and this was a very sad moment for new jersey. This was done in nj and it was on the highway, the kid skylar was a star quarterback for a school in nj and he threw the dog, on purpose. Not by accident. I was at the ceremony for schultz and this is no joke, he should get more than 5 years for killing that dog.

And do you speak for dogs? Most dogs seem to enjoy working...most dogs don't act constructively when they are kept locked in the house with nothing to do. And crating isn't torture when done right. For many dogs it's their safe place and for many it's for their safety.
