The question should have been "the name of the first satellite put in orbit". Not everyone was raised in the US, so not everyone knows that specific answer.
here's a question: WHY THE F SHOULD ONE BUTTER TO REMEMBER THE FIRST AMERICAN SATELLITE? the only thing that matters is the name of the first artificial satellite, and that is Sputnik. NOTHING ELSE DESERVES TO BE MEMORIZED. why don't they ask what was the name of the first Chinese satellite? :) :)
@netweit3 It depends the state you live in, and then the school district, and if you are taking, advance classes meaning normal, out side of usa. If you are slow and are taking basic high school classes you are considard to be behind, CHINA and MEXICO and some of the INTL. are more ahead, in studies.
@Pierre4452 Yea I've been taking honors... I mean normal. Some still seem pretty difficult though for being 5th grade but as you said, its probably because we are behind where we live or something.
Mercury was my first instinct too. I would have had the same performance as him (EXACTLY the same performance - I even had January 20th in my mind, but wasn't sure, so I paused and looked at Wikipedia, just as he looked at the classmate).... :(
i was screaming explorer 1 the whole time..

That question isn't about "smarts." It's about recalling information.

I wasn't 100% sure but I would have said Explorer. If I were to name the first satellite, I'd name it Explorer, not Mercury, duh. :P
