@dazbonoasbo the ship used a gyroscope for orientation. They consist of 3 planes that move independently and from their posistions you calculate which way your are pointed. Gimbal lock is when two of those planes move into the same posistion. When that happens you lose orientation in one plane. So you can drift off course and you won't know it.
Its pretty complicated but that's basically what it means.
Lol if I was there and my captain was like "What did you do?" I'm the one that would be like "Ummmmm.......I hit my head?" also, "Hey we got a problem here." I'd be like
all he had to do was look at what the gague said before he began the chryo-stir, woud u put this unfortunate turn of events down to human error, or a lack of concentration on the part of the astranaut?
@dazzaboy04 The gauges would have said nothing, as the mechanics of the spacecraft were working perfectly. The explosion was caused by a gap in wire insulation within the Oxygen tank, which created a spark. In the pure oxygen environment the insulation burned quickly and fire became an explosion, backed up by a tank already filled to 1000 PSI.
Fuel , Food and Oxygen were not large concerns due to their abundance on the LEM and Command Module. However, Power and Carbon Dioxide filtration became very large problems quickly.
@relic501 i hope NASA gets off their lazy asses and sends a man back to the moon before his lifetime is up, just imagine, despite age, if he and Fred Haise were able to finaly land on the moon.
@SuperTennis3 I like your optimism. However, you must consider the fact that Fred Haise is 77 years old. Even if we had a functioning lunar vehicle right now, it is highly unlikely NASA would send anyone of that age to the moon. And I know what your thinking: NASA put a 77 year-old John Glenn into space some years ago, which is great, but that was low Earth orbit, not the moon by any means. I agree with and appreciate your space ambitions, but no old-timer is gonna land on the moon anytime soon.

@relic501 Nobody ever set foot on the moon, so I don't feel so sorry for him. If the moon landings were real I would be sad, good thing they were faked.
@phantomofthedrivein I guess some was with regular trick filming, but they did have a set-up in a Boeing aircraft, that made dives during which they experienced "weightlessness".
NASA allowed them to use the KC 135 to film the movie. NASA also gives weightless rides to groups of college students doing experiments and selects them out of a large pool of applicants. Nowadays private businesses allow anyone to get weightless rides in their jets such as Zero-G Corporation and Auroru Areospace. This has been done mostly in response to Burt Rutan's/Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic commercial space tourism business.
No shit! I think most people would have probably soiled their suits in that situation. But I guess we should cut the Flight Surgeon some slack since at that point Mission Control didn't know an explosion had occurred.
@kook2222 There is a very complex and highly involved series of issues that arose with that particular O2 tank that eventually led to it exploding. No one single event caused it.
As critical care nurse i'm very interested in the NASA problem solving skills...i'm very interested in their way to face and solve problems...i'm fascinating to their fantastic procedures...they've procedures for everything...this is awesome!!!
I recently heard an interview with Fred Haise, who said that Jack Swigert got a bad rap in this film. There was never a doubt that Swigert was qualified to fly the mission. The backup crew recieved the exact same training as the primary crew for just the situation they faced, with Ken Mattingly unable to go.He also said that the throwing the switches to stir the cryro tanks was normally a job that Haise would have done since the switches were on his panel. He was in the LM, so Swigert did it.
I kind of agree, it seems to be pretty much Ron Howard's style to play with the truth just enough to make it more exciting for a wider audience. It's still a great film.
That said, have you ever seen the real picture they took of the command module after they seperated from it? It looks way more damaged than it did in the film, amazing they made it back at all.
I'm surprised they didn't wet themselves because I would've :(
I read the Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich and I see how they applied it too. The SPA and the mastermind helped and Kranz already had step 1 and 2 down obviously. It's cool to see them use the natural process of goal achievement without even realizing it!

1) it is "the new frontier" we already conquered the west its all thats left besides extremely deep sea, flying is defing gravity in a sense and there for gets people intreged
2) i would say that is just your personal opinion however the US did have a space race with russia during or around the "red scare"
3) we have one of the most advanced military forces its only natural to think of the best... just like the Us thinks of china or japan for internet advances, although i belive denmark has
better speeds and finaly 4) we are curious of whats in the sky because its only natural among all creatures on earth to be curious of the unknown.. try hiding something from a dog behind your back and he will keep trying to walk behind you in order to see what it is you are hiding ... what is space hiding from us ? besides some sort of life form( aliens can be micro organisms btw)
(2) America invested trillions of dollars to making advances in its space program. Only recently did the Chinese create a manned spaceflight program.
(3) First aircraft was invented by Americans and the first man to walk on the moon was an American (no other country has attempted to walk on the moon).
(4) We are curious what is on the other side of the mountain (where we are not).
...not to mention it was done during the 1960's with 60's technologhy. now lets get the debt payed down ditch the middle east and get back to exploring and daring to do great feats in science again : )
@epl0si0n Rocket fuel isn't made from oil, it just doesn't have enough power to lift up something and can't burn in space without oxidizer, and even then there are more efficient fuels for that.
"Man. Huh. Well, copy that, Apollo, but we're all headed to lunch right now. Tell you what, just take a few shorter breaths and we'll get back to you in about 45, okay?"
Jack Swigert wasn't stupid or anything like that, but there's a particular art to stoking the oxygen tanks that only comes with practice and familiarisation - a certain type of jiggling positioning via the controls. It was not a straight up and down gadget application task which poor Swigert tried to make of it. And this oversight was only a momentary oversight by Swigert, but by then it was too late to avoid the damages and complications.
@Richardhedditch261 The damage was caused by frayed insulation on the O2 tank stirring fan wiring. This caused a short-circuit, which ignited the Teflon insulation, and this fire caused the explosion.
It was not caused by Jack Swigert failing to "properly caress" the switch.
no. together with mission control, they managed to save themselves and return safely to earth. never reached the moon, but survived against overwhelming odds. look it up on wikipedia, it´s truly an amazing feat!
The evidence that they didn`'t go to the moon is crushing. Once people have seen it, there's nothing anyone can do to make them think they really went.

Houston? *pause* We are venting something into space. I can, uh, see it out the window.
*silence*
"Roger 13, we copy your venting."
*control room goes crazy*
There are actually a few differences between this film and what was actually said on the mission but it's still a good film.

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we enjoy space travel and flying?
(2) Why do we have a perception that space is closer related with America?
(3) Why do we relate space and aviation with Americans' culture and values?
(4) Why do we so curious what is in the sky?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

1 i get sick in airplanes so i dont enjoy it
Prankfuns 2 years ago
1) it is "the new frontier" we already conquered the west its all thats left besides extremely deep sea, flying is defing gravity in a sense and there for gets people intreged
2) i would say that is just your personal opinion however the US did have a space race with russia during or around the "red scare"
3) we have one of the most advanced military forces its only natural to think of the best... just like the Us thinks of china or japan for internet advances, although i belive denmark has
widjadidja00 2 years ago
better speeds and finaly 4) we are curious of whats in the sky because its only natural among all creatures on earth to be curious of the unknown.. try hiding something from a dog behind your back and he will keep trying to walk behind you in order to see what it is you are hiding ... what is space hiding from us ? besides some sort of life form( aliens can be micro organisms btw)
widjadidja00 2 years ago
(1) Man is destined to explore.
(2) America invested trillions of dollars to making advances in its space program. Only recently did the Chinese create a manned spaceflight program.
(3) First aircraft was invented by Americans and the first man to walk on the moon was an American (no other country has attempted to walk on the moon).
(4) We are curious what is on the other side of the mountain (where we are not).

...not to mention it was done during the 1960's with 60's technologhy. now lets get the debt payed down ditch the middle east and get back to exploring and daring to do great feats in science again : )
qwuad61 2 years ago 6
I agree, forget the middle east and lets them figure out things while we explore mysteries of space.

You can't, you're to busy stealing their oil.
andreiclawhammer 2 years ago
So are you, but the idea is still good.
23Revan84 2 years ago
@23Revan84 thats a bit . . .harsh.
smileymileyfanemily 1 year ago
@23Revan84 We would not have the problems in the middle east or any other if we instead explored the mysteries within ourselves.
pimmagrimm 1 year ago
@23Revan84 you dumb cunt. where do you think the oil for the rocket fuel comes from
epl0si0n 1 year ago
@epl0si0n Rocket fuel isn't made from oil, it just doesn't have enough power to lift up something and can't burn in space without oxidizer, and even then there are more efficient fuels for that.

"Uh, Houston, we're venting oxygen."
"Man. Huh. Well, copy that, Apollo, but we're all headed to lunch right now. Tell you what, just take a few shorter breaths and we'll get back to you in about 45, okay?"
albee1000 2 years ago 4
Jack Swigert wasn't stupid or anything like that, but there's a particular art to stoking the oxygen tanks that only comes with practice and familiarisation - a certain type of jiggling positioning via the controls. It was not a straight up and down gadget application task which poor Swigert tried to make of it. And this oversight was only a momentary oversight by Swigert, but by then it was too late to avoid the damages and complications.
Richardhedditch261 2 years ago
@Richardhedditch261 The damage was caused by frayed insulation on the O2 tank stirring fan wiring. This caused a short-circuit, which ignited the Teflon insulation, and this fire caused the explosion.
It was not caused by Jack Swigert failing to "properly caress" the switch.

HAHAH, they now use the module of Apollo 11 and 12 to live... is 2020 were going back to save them!
ItalianBandit 2 years ago
no. together with mission control, they managed to save themselves and return safely to earth. never reached the moon, but survived against overwhelming odds. look it up on wikipedia, it´s truly an amazing feat!

The evidence that they didn`'t go to the moon is crushing. Once people have seen it, there's nothing anyone can do to make them think they really went.

do u guys think that if he didn't turn the auto fans off this would of never happened
thegirlwithmanyusers 2 years ago
It would've happened it anyways because it was a minor defect in the tanks.
truearizonagirl 2 years ago
They would have stirred the tanks at some point anyway, they always did, it was SOP.
