A haunting piece of music, my thoughts goes out to the brave men who fought and died for freedom. The video footage of Monument valley is awesome, a place I would like to spend several days wandering around in a camper van (my thanks go out to John Ford and other movie directors for taking us there)
you dont think Mexico hasnt taken over there is a school in California that put the Mexican flag up over the American .............pathetic and the pricipal wasn't fired
@jameskruess what the f'n hell is wrong with you? your rant makes as much sense as "dog cat see tree big run bird fly , picket fence green sky blue moon". get a dictionary and grammar book and rework your post.
@GATEJUMPER1 Because its Hollywood..its amercian version ..the Mexican version is no way close to this version..but the intent was the same..no mercy, no quarter, and then cut throat!
As sb has already written on this page-yep, that's not original "A degüello" the defenders heard during battle of Alamo. However, many(and me too) consider, that it is this version which is better than the original one, for it does sound much more terriblier and expresses more emotions.
In the Independence Wars of the Spanish Americas the Peruvian patriots almost lost the battle of Junín (Perú, 1824) because of the Spanish Army "clarín" (bugle man) playing degüello constantly everywhere in the field until he was taken prisoner and the battle was won for Perú. The Peruvian writer Ricardo Palma tells us that the clarín was going to be shot unless he promised to become a monk, which he did.
"A Degüello" is not a pretty song, no matter how Nelson Riddle interprets it ... When played by a dozen or so Mexican Buglers it is a harsh piece of music. Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana used it to strike fear into whoever he was facing in combat. It came to be known as "The Slit Throat" only because it was the last music 1000's of Mexican Rebels heard while Generals Santa Ana and Cos were putting down rebellions. It sounds good when played in a studio by a solo bugler but that is so contrived.
I do know that, you have mis understood, the average mexican solder in a band could not have played this anyway.I am from England and went to see The Alamo four years ago, will never forget it and will stay with me for ever. PS I am many things, but a dummy is not one of them !!!!
I was in a hotel in El Paso when a Mexicano patron requested to have this played by the table marachi band. The owner of the hotel threw the patron out and fired the band for playing it! You don't play this song in public in Texas unless you want trouble!
This is not the original Deguello, it is still beautiful and mysterious. The original deguello was just annoying almost as if you had to hear Taps all day long. However both versions are quite intriguing, I'd hate to hear it every day 3 times a day.
@jolewi4 U are right! this is not the real Deguello! Some of the people really think this is it..but it isn't..The "Cut throat Song"..Take no prisoners!!
Amazon has this entire album as an MP3 d/l for 9.99. This is the John Wayne "Alamo" movie soundtrack composed by Dimitri Tiomkin (1960). Also contains "Green Leaves of Summer" & Marty Robbins' "Ballad of the Alamo". This piece is #2 but only 53 seconds with guitar accompanying the trumpet. Wayne's "Republic" speech is also wonderful.
@PokeyGreen Hey! Just the other day I saw John Russell in the "Lawman"..Encore Westerns..But I did like him, as I said earlier, as the "Highwaymen" in "Forever Amber"..You are right, when he is mean, he is mean!!
Cornel Wilde and Linda Darnell..old flick and a very young John Russell..My brother always referred to him, after that movie, as the "Highwaymen"..and in the movie he is the Highwayman"
I was reading the comments and saw John Russell and Claude Akins names..Gee I haven't heard those name in awhile...I will always know John Russell by the name "Highwaymen" (Forever Amber) and he did one movie with Clint Eastwood, but forgot the name..
@billeagle51 I do believe the movie youspeak of is The PaleRider. John Russell was the leader of a group of paid "Lawmen". He was also in The Outlaw Josey Wales, though, a small part.
This was played throughout the 1959 Howard Hawkes classic film "Rio Bravo," which starred John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Walter Brennan, Angie Dickenson, Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez, Ward Bond, John Russell and Claude Akins. It was set in Texas in the 1800's.
(Continued) It was played when lawmen Wayne et al were bottled up in the local jail to prevent the bad guys from springing a prisoner. The bad guys got the local Mexican band to play Deguello day and night to warn Wayne et all that unless they gave up the prisoner, there would be an attack with no prisoners taken, no quarter given. Ricky Nelson explains to them about the significance of the song and its playing following the fall of the Alamo.
Yes, one of my favourite film pieces from one of my favourite films. Tremendous trumpet work on this track gives it incredible atmosphere. So what if it wasnt the Alamo's "real" Deguello, it should have been.
My favourite version of a wonderfully dramatic and suspenseful tune. Composer Dimitri Tiomkin and arranger Nelson Riddle were both at the top of their game at the time, and it needed only the impeccable and inspired playing of veteran trumpet wizard Manny Klein to ensure that this would become a classic recording.
Correction: Actually the Goliad Massacre (300 murdered) happened on March 27, after the Alamo fell. Again, is was MEXICANS and Texans fighting TOGETHER for freedom, and the constitution of 1824. It was this murder that truly united these Texans. Peace!
They didn't, you dummy!. This is just a piece of music written by Dimitri Tiomking for the John Wayne movie! The real deguello was played at the Alamo but it was just a bugle call to indicate "attack, make no prisoners". You can hear the real deguelloon Youtube. Search for "Deguello bugle call"
