OMD used a tape machine they nicknamed "Winston" and placed it right in front on stage.
Some bands were afraid to show their tape machines, while others utilized it for experimentation.

I think this was the typical style back in the early 80s, with Depeche and others using this kind of tapes and even putting them at prominent place on the scene.
