If you'll look at other videos of the game you'll see that they did in fact call a 15 yard penalty for 'unsportsmanlike' conduct (Who wouldn't celebrate after the best drive in history). Anyway, this penalty was assessed on the extra point. Before SC scored, it was 31 to 28. The TD made it 34 to 28 with three seconds left. They still had to try the extra point, but it was from 15 yards farther out and it missed.

Perhaps I was not clear. My comment was directed at ND's (preliminary and unwarranted) celebration, not USC's justified celebration after scoring the winning TD. I was just pointing out the irony that while USC did get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for nothing more than some guys jumping and high fiving in the end zone after scoring the winning TD, ND did NOT get an excessive celebration penalty for emptying their entire bench and student section onto the field before the game was over.

I was at that game and when they stormed the field, even though it was obvious that the clock should have stopped, I was very worried that the refs would simply give up and head to the locker room. Big props to them for clearing the field, restoring order and doing the right thing. I read somewhere that the ND time keeper was on the field and couldn't see the ref waiving his arms so he kept the clock running. Weak - but that's their story and their sticking to it.
