i am a 13 year old organ student, and my lifelong dream is to learn this piece. are there any "pointers" that you couold give me. some ways to make it easier. please email me @ hinnenkampp@gmail.com. it would be much appreciated
Perfect tempo! It is good to hear the piece at its fullest without the blur of sound that occurs when others take it to the race track. Beautifully played! Bravo!
There is a perfect tempo, in my opinion, at which this piece should be played to sound great. Mr. Fiore, you've locked that tempo in, and now my 'sweet spot' is all beat up! Excellent!!!
I greatly enjoyed this rendition of this piece. My only frustration occurred with the very slow download that meant I waited 20 minutes to watch the whole video.
Sorry, way too fast for me - I like Widor's interpretation and speed! However, I acknowledge the great teacher, Mr Fiore, as one of the best I have heard. p.s. I bet he's glad he studied his arpeggio technique!! Well done.
This has to be the grandest, showiest, most flamboyant, moving organ masterpieces ever composed! I am putting in my will that this will be played as the recessional at my funeral! LOL, no for certain! ;-)
Very well played indeed!!! I also think the tempo was perfect as was the registration. I heard a recording of Widor playing this himself at the organ of St. Sulpice where he took a very slow tempo, despite his published tempo markings. Tempo must always be governed by the particular instrument and the acoustic. There is a video of this Widor played by Diane Bish, another well-known American organist where the work is destroyed by a tempo which is way too fast. I would invite you to compare.
Sorry but you are mistaken about that tempo being too quick..Widor's tempo marking is about 100 and an earlier version 118 or there abouts...this performance is very near 104....
fiore... bravo, all the work that Widor would have truely admared.WONDERFULLY rendered with all the true passion and skill of a truely beautiful organist... i have never heard it played better...
fiore... Beautifully played and i have never heard it played better... you are a true maestro.
What a wonderful rendition ! I remember at my old school, our director of music played this often...we all though he was showing off...but were frightfully impressed nevertheless !!
David...what a treat to see you here on YouTube. I've had the priviledge of hearing you play in and around Seattle many times. And it never, ever ceases to be a treat for the ears and spirit. Thank you for sharing your musical gift. You are missed here, my friend.
amongst all those versions of this piece on youtube, some played by famous organists on famous organs, this is the best one i found so far. congrats, this is celestial beauty and majesty.
There's alot of versions of Widor's Organ #5 Tocatta out there.....and this is one of the best I've heard. Played even on a slow heavy action organ this is great!
Just the right tempo for this organ and space. Awesome!!
My partner plays this for fun, but even he says this is good. What is with the wobbling head when playing organ? My other half does not have this affliction. Even the hands crossed and feet doing what they do is no excuse. Is it for dramatic effect? If so it has failed. J
@jameskinmond1980 Style and interpretation, my good man. Just like your other half is sure to have his individual way of playing it. I always found it good to just close my eyes and listen... unless you're driving, of course, and if you are, WHY ARE YOU WATCHING YOUTUBE??? :) har har... :)
Incredible... This is the best ever performance I have heard of this magnificent work. Too bad I didn't listen more to David while I was in Seattle. The energy, rigour and stability of explosion of passion...
@3aasmith Hi 3aasmith...David has 4 CD's to date. One was recorded in Seattle at University Temple United Methodist Church. The other three were recorded on a 3-man. Rieger-Kloss organ at a church in Krnov, Czech Republic. I'm away from Seattle right now, but if you'd like to email me...I'd be glad to send you the titles, labels, etc. when I return home. This is SO HARD that his hands appear to have seven or eight fingers each! The video looks like on of those claymation things where the musician simply grows extra fingers to play the music! VERY GOOD! :)
Brilliant playing, an interpretation of both fire and majesty in incredible abundance! Highly recommended, especially for the wonderful close ups of the hands and feet and keyboards and pedal console in furious action. One feels palpably the swirling motion inherent in this monumental score, and the finale is gratifyingly magnificent. The audio quality is of high caliber, and the console comes alive in this memorably fascinating and intimate portrait of a great artist at work.
@PipeOrganistSC PipeOrganistSC...Branchporter is correct. Many European organs use what is called a Freie Kombination (Free Combinations) where each stop has little toggle switches that set it on or off for a given piston number. It's usually quite limited, but works well.

Hello TSB1 regarding the issues of tempo/timing ...(actually mine in 5:52 counting the actual start/finish) ..This space is reverberant, the organ is tubular pneumatic, and hence a slower tempo for that space and action is appropriate.
