  • Strange to hear that Palestrina or Gesualdo would have been better to write a music on a text written in the 19th century. How do you do that? The Time Machine? And Gothic here doesn't refer to the Gothic style of the middle age, but to the "Gothic spirit" that started in the dark romantism, so again 19th.

That confusion of ideas and lack of culture amazes me always when I read comments on forums....

  • Whether it's Bernard Herrmann or this guy, I don't get any sense of the book from this kind of orchestration, at all. The problem is an age old one: what's Gothic opera? Gothic period art has literature & architecture, but no music. The architecture is ecclesiastical & the literary style is romance mixed with mystery & terror. But this music falls way short of those elements. I think Rennaissance composers like Palestrina & Gesualdo come much closer to the other forms of Gothic style.

  • @bondurango Music should be specific to the composer, not the period or place. Read "Words with Music" by Lehman Engel. He explains the idea really well. Imagine the idiocy of a world of music drama that always had to cling to what most people think of when they are presented with a concept.

  • I'm really looking forward to hearing this interpretation as I am a fan of Herrmann's obscure opera.

  • WOW!!
