@MollysLip23 No, it's a Jazzmaster. Both the Jag and the JM had the controls für the second circuit on top of the pickguard but the pickguard of the jaguar had metal on it.
That was the year(in 1961) when Geritol became their sponsor, because back in 1960, Dodge was still their sponsor when they were promoting the new 1960 Dodge Dart back then.
These videos are just golden to me. I've been playing for almost 50 years and I still consider Neil and Buddy to be two of my biggest inspirations. Thank you SO much for posting this.
I just read an article in Vintage Guitar Magazine about Neil and had to check him out. What a talent. I can't believe I've never before heard of him. I guess you just don't check out Lawrence Welk clips to find great guitar players!
Thanks for posting. That old Fender Jazz sounds exactly like the old Bob Bogles early Venture tunes. They used a 59' Fender Jazzmaster when they started out.
You can tell him for me I like his playing too. I was too young in those days to watch Lawrence Welk, didn't want my friends to know. I did watch The Chantays when they played. But I sure like this music now.
You can also pass on to your dad that he is one smokin' great guitarist!!! I still watch the re-runs just hopin' to catch some of your dad's playin'! Plus all the really cool classic instruments he has played on the show! What a treasure of guitars!!! Lar (from jazzethics)
I think every young guitarist should spend countless hours listening to Neil Levang. It's the best lessons they could ever get, plus they'd get to hear some great tunes that seem to be forgotten these days. Young guitarists don't seem to play tunes anymore. I wonder what happened to that great clip of San Antonio Rose.
He played on some of those great Sons of the Pioneers albums, too, didn't he? His versatility was as incredible as his musicianship! Sure wish the PBS show would inerview him and some of the other musicians instead of all of those singers.

sure... you put heavy guage flatwound strings on a vintage Jazzmaster and it sounds like it's tuned down. MAGIC. duh.

@zarchy55...thanks. Now that I look more closely at the headstock I can see that it says Fender, but the shape of the guitar threw me off.

He must have been detuned. It sounds like a tenor guitar.

You are his son! Great, I like what your father plays. Is he still alive and does he still play?
stratojetb47 3 years ago
Stratojet,
Thanks for the kind words. I will pass it on! Dad is still alive, happy and healthy, living in Santa Clarita, CA. Plays only for fun these days.
