  • If you don't mind saying, how are you controlling the PWM's? How many signals are you using? Do you use a MAP sensor? This puts me in mind of the 555-timer EFI, could it be a cousin?

    Thanks

    GeoB

  • Oh sorry that wasn't your video, it was on a 3.5 hp, any help would be great though.

  • OH just say the other video of yours to see hows it's none Thanks!

  • How did ya go from vertical to horizontal? I am building a Belite, have two of those engines, I work at a foundry as a pattern maker for the last 25 years, and have drawn up the prints for a reduction drive, of my own design, just waiting to get a motor, those 18 hp motors I have would be a great test bed for that drive unit! comment back Please! I'll hunt the web for more info also, Thanks!

  • @indianchief741 thanx for warching. the B&S engine has a removable plate that the factory uses the same block for vertical and horizontal. we removed that plate and fashioned an oil pan. then made an oil pump to service everything that was originally just splash lubed. pump drives off crank. good luck with your project.

  • Im sorry friend but that rubber prop will not do at all, it flexes way to much!! lol

  • @5mrmotor lol, ya, never buy your wood out of a van at the closed out gas station. The blacklight Elvis paintings should have been a dead give-away. thanks for watching!

  • How much does it weigh ?

  • @topspeed10 thanx for the interest. With the prop, starter motor, and the pwms it is just over 63lbs. re: where to get one, I would like to get something together that would show how to build what we have done and probably will in the future. liability issues certainly make it difficult to build them for sale. by the time you cover youself legally it becomes cost prohibitive to buy. Sadly we live in a "sue happy" world. Thanx again for watching.

  • @talonflight I have a blog at max3fan.blogspot.com to see my interest.

    Thanks for the reply.

  • Where can I get mine ?

  • Nice conversion. When did B&S stop making the opposed twins. Read all the comments, any progress on the hemi heads replacing the flat heads? One of the Beaujon ultralight designs called out the 16hp B&S engine with a 42"x24" prop. Your 52"x36" is definitely making more thrust. What is the static thrust number as shown in the video? Do you have a "build log" someplace to see pics? Mostly interested in the pressure oiling mods. Thnx in advance, Mike

  • would that thing produce enough power to actually fly?

  • @evinsteven13 do you have any idea how much power it takes to make an aircraft fly?

  • @talonflight I dont know if your comment was sarcastic or not, but would be sick if it could fly

  • @evinsteven13 No my answer was not meant to be sarcastic. the Wright brothers flew an 800 pound plane with an engine that produced 18 horsepower cold and 12 warm. the engine itself weighed 400lbs.. A manpowered aircraft flew by pedal power and he produced about 1/2 continuous horsepower. this aircraft must weigh 254lbs. or less empty. This engine currently exceeds 30hp. It will fly. It seems you like to make nothing into something. That's all we are doing. keep working your projects! good job

  • @talonflight thats freaking awesome. thanks for the info

  • I thought those looked like Briggs mufflers. I never thought they would flow enough for them to work. But I guess a single cylinder is not to much for those muffles. I am installing them on my bird to quiet her down some. That sounds good with those muffles.

  • I would like to know where you got those mufflers. I could use those on my 1/2 VDub, please leave me a message as to where I can get these mufflers. Check out my video of my 1/2 VDub Avenger also.

  • @cornfieldflyer These came from TSC...Tractor supply company. Alot of small engine repair shops have them in stock as well and they are only around $7.00. Thanx for watching, headed toward your vid now.

  • Just be careful that B & S engine might not hold together using over speed ,and extra fuel.Neat camera effect on the propeller looks like its curved and coned

  • @chuckbear1961 Thanks for watching and the advice. The crank and rods are our concern and are not opposed to replacing those eventually. Normal operating RPM will be 2200 with transient RPM to 3600 and of course limited service to overhaul is a must. I am not a glider pilot so I prefer that it keeps making noise while airbourne. Thanks again. Mark

  • Thanks, Talonflight. I admire your scrounging abilities and talent in putting together a system like this from hardware store components.. and it works!! Not an easy task, for sure. I've been thinking of doing an EFI mod. on a 2A042 surplus engine , also an opposed twin... How does that compare to your B&S? I don't really need more than 25 HP or much higher than 3600 RPM, but would like easier starting and no carb ice worries.

  • hey, that's a mighty cool custom engine set-up!.. I've been thinking about doing the same thing with a Briggs opposed twin. To get 50hp out of it what RPM do you think will be required?.. I'd be nervous about reliability & overheating pushing it that hard.. What fuel injection system are you using?.. I wish you success in the new year!

  • @mosiprop Thanks for the comment. We designed the whole mess. The injectors are from a Ford 2.9. The PWM's are homebuilt from parts from the local electronics store. The air "plumbing", is just that, 1-1/4" dual sink drain. Throttle plate, hand crafted with a potentiometer for demand data. The distributor and shaft are homemade. Cap, points and rotor are Ford 8N tractor. One of the secrets is the fuel pump is mechanical (homemade) and a device to regulate steady pressure, also homemade. cont.

  • @mosiprop Thread continued. I could tell you the secret, but then I'd have to ki.... errrrr... block you. As to dependability, A fresh engine will certainly have an hour rated lifespan.(TBD by testing) Cooling is less likely to be the problem, I believe keeping it warm will be the issue. Our intent is to have dampers controlled by CHT to maintain an operating temp.. Of course these heads will not hold the combustion pressures of this displacement producing 50 H.P. planned max rpm 3600.

  • @mosiprop Last reply, I swear. This engine no longer has a slung oil design. We designed a pressurizing oil pump and internal galleries to "over"oil key areas. The oil pan is made to operate inverted as I intend the aircraft to be aerobatic. We still have some technical things to overcome but are making nice progress. The cool thing is everthing was bought @ Menards, Walmart, TSC and the electronics store. I am commercial rotorcraft /fixed and have never been more excited. Thanx again!

  • How bigs the prop

  • I am pretty sure this is the best ultralight ever. Nope, I'm certian of it now, it is the best!!!

  • @SCardamon Thanks for the great comment totally anonymous person that I have no association with but that I can tell is incredibly intelligent for recognizing our jeanyus! Love you guys.

  • and you're getting 50 hp from a briggs, this looks like what my minimax needs

  • @framed30 Thanks for watching. Our original goal was to get an engine that would produce 150 to 180 lbs. of static thrust. Once we fuel injected this engine, we surpassed that. So the development has become "Let's try to get one horsepower per pound of engine." Engine w/starter and prop is 67lbs. We are "lightening" the engine by about 9lbs. I am confident OHV and hemi heads will get us to 50h.p.. We want to stay normally aspirated for dependability reasons. We'll see how it goes. Thanx again!

  • @framed30 P.S The Minimax is a neat aircraft and not unlike what we are building. What engine are you using now? and do you like how the Minimax flies? Does it actually fit in 103? Fly safe, Mark

  • @talonflight Mark,

The minimax is a great flyer, but you have to stick with a 277 or something similar in weight to stay under the 254. Really needs something a bit bigger, say a 377

    Rick

  • @framed30 Rick, The main reason we undertook this engine mod was for that problem.Under 103 it is like they said an engine will weigh 99lbs(unpowered weight limit-155, powered-254) I haven't found any reason, yet, why this engine won't work well. We have run it easily 100+ hrs with remarkable dependability. I'll try to post more here as we go along. Hopefully, we'll have it flying in the spring.Mark

  • look at those props bend.... lol im kidding

  • @dodgedart74 Thanks for watching! Looking at your screen name I think you will be interested that I have designed hemispherical OHV heads for this engine to put on it soon. I would like to see 50 H.P. without the aid of a turbo or supercharger. The engine with starter and prop only weighs 67lbs.. The heads are designed just like Mopar, with almost identical plug and valve placement and proportion. Hopefully it translates to Mopar performance here. Stay tuned and thanks again.

  • Man that is way cool! :)

    Nice work!

I love how the prop. looks on the vid!

Cool dual mufflers :) I would think you could drill a few extra holes inside to reduce back pressure.

So this is an 18hp Briggs lawnmower engine, it sure looks neet now!

    Best of luck with it!

All of my FrankenBriggs engines will stay firmly planted on the ground!

    Miles

  • @ChargerMiles007 Thanx for taking the time to watch and the comments! Our final intent is to join the exhaust. I think it runs better, similar to the crossover pipes on cars. And the sound of it is more impressive. Here you only hear one cyl. at a time. and detracts from the effect. I am continuing to go thru your "library" of vids. Really cool stuff! Keep it up. Talonflight

  • @talonflight

Yes, I enjoyed your vid a lot, what you have done here is very impressive!

I have a lot of vids on my channel, so it could take you a while, even to view only the ones you are interested in! :) Keep up the good work, and best of luck getting it flying!

    Miles

  • Mark thats pretty dang cool and innovative brother!

  • @helobelow Thanks Drew, Remember, we are all one flight physical away from being ultralight pilots. I dig the vacay pix on your channel.Justin just got an Armolite M-4 you would like. Is that considered casual attire in Texas?LOL Fly safe, Mark

  • @talonflight Well let's just say "my house is protected by the good lord and a gun, and you might meet em' both if you show up here unwelcomed son!" LOL! Have you heard that song? I dont know who sings it but I like it!
