Gentlemen it is me duty To inform you of one beauty Though I'd ask of you a favour Not to seek her for a while Though I own she is a creature Of character and feature No words can paint the picture Of the queen of all Argyll Chorus And if you could have seen her there Boys, if you had just been there The swan was in her movements And the marvel in her smile All the roses in the garden They bow and ask her pardon For not one could match the beauty Of the Queen of all Argyll
@ShadowSerris I think he says "and the marnin' (morning) was in her smile", not marvel. That's what I hear, anyway. And it makes sense, after "the swan was in her smile"

i was watching toby turner and he started singing this and i was like NO way there is no wway there is a irish band called silly wizard but i was mistaken
i feel like i can sing along with this though i haven't heard it till now, but, a good "friend" of mine sings this to me all the time.... i absolutely love it :3
i recieved my middle name (argyll) from this song, and i wear it proudly. i feel like it seperates me from most teens these days. its nice to have such a wonderful origin for my middle name.
@Fimmion24 are you sure? wherever I looked it said "could have seen her there"... and it also says "the marvel in her smile", which is not exactly a feature I'd associate with a horse. But of course, you may be right, i don't even speak English so well.
@Fimmion24 Are you sure? Wherever I looked I found "could have seen her there"... and it also says "the marvel in her smile", and I like horses but I wouldn't say that a pretty smile is really their typical feature. But of course you may be right, I don't even know the Silly Wizard (but I love this song).
@gelatoalpuffo "And if you could a' seen her there, boys, if you had just been there, the swan was in her movement and the mornin' in her smile" Which is what I hear, listening to this for 30 + years or so :) Of course, the best line is "All the roses in the garden, they bow and ask her pardon, for not one could match the beauty of the Queen of all Argyll". Poetry, aye.
@Fimmion24 Now that you mention it, it does sound a bit like "the mare." However, horses have some almost, if not actual, divine significance to the Celts, so it may just be a way of denoting her divine status.
@Dudin4tor He mentioned Silly Wizard in a Toby Games LET'S PLAY and sang a few lines from this song, and effectively sent every single one of his fans here
Tobuscus was playing Terraria and called a wizard in the game silly. He then rememered that that was the name of a band and sang a little bit of this song.
I remember seeing Andy Stewart at the Cherry Tree at St Mary's Church on the University of Pennsylvania 's Campus many years ago and thought he was marvelous! Our children grew up listening to this music and still are drawn to it. Thank you for having this great music available, I am grateful!
I first heard this song performed as a cover by the Minstrels of Mayhem (another awesome group) and thought it really was a trade song. I kinda love the fact that it was in fact written in the 80's by a contemporary musician. I applaud the Wizards!
Love Andy for writing this song. It's so perfect people think it's a trad song. How good is that! :-D According to Andy, who still sings this song when he tours, he just wrote this little tune because of a girl he was interested in, but who wouldn't give him the time of day. But hey, he loves to tell good stories...
@OrlopRat42 The use of the term "fiddle" is hardly limited to folk musicians; in my experience (15 years playing violin in art ["classical"] music and 28 years singing it) a "classical" violinist is just as likely to call his/her instrument in an informal setting a "fiddle" as a "violin". Also, the term "fiddle" is definitely significantly older, the violin proper -- and indeed, its entire family -- not even having been developed until the 16th Century.
In 1980 SW was on their way to Cologne to do a gig at the Folkfestival near the dome. It was a lucky hit we booked them one or two nights before to play in our little pub in a small town near Wuppertal. We payed a fair price because a meal and overnight stay was included. Until the moment they played the first note we didn't have any suggestion who was to play in our pub. It was breathtaking, a thing I won't forget all my life. I still have all their Records I bought from them that evening SIGH
Does any one know what instrunment is being played in the intro? it sounds like a bouzouki or maybe a 12 string guitar, i dont think it can be a normal 6-string
Some parts played on the guitar remind me of Led Zeppelin.I wonder if it is the celtic music who had any influence on Led Zeppelin or maybe on the contrary this is Silly Wizzard who adopts some melody methods applied by Led Zeppelin?
Is this song based on some real story or real person? Who is 'the Queen of Argyll'? Is it some special lady or just an "abstract" one? Could smb. explain please?
Yes, I actually know it's a place in Scotland. I was just wondering what 'Queen' is the song is about? Was it some special Queen known for her beauty?
The song was written by Andy Stewart, and at a concert, if I remember right (long time ago), he said she was a mythic figure he made up for the song because it sounded good. I have never been able to track down any reference to a real Queen of Argyll, or a King either :P I know there were dukes of Argyll, a title created in 1701.
@OrlopRat42 Apparently Somerled MacGillebride Macfergus styled himself as King, or Righ, of Argyll for a time (He was also Lord, or King of the Isles also). While most of the time this is translated as "lord" of Argyll, under the Gaelic system a righ, or ri, was a "king", opposed to the Ard Ri Alban, or the High King of Scots (or the High King of the Irish etc.). So, the existence of an actual Queen of Argyll seems possible, though its probably better just to enjoy the song.
It's an old song, and may not reference anyone in particular. However, "Mary Queen of the Scots" (Mary I of Scotland / Mary Stuart) (1542-1587) was apparently sometimes referred to as "Queen of Argyll" because one of her titles was also the Duchess of Argyll. The song may or may not refer to her.
Correction to that. Her family carried the title of Counts of Argyll. As OrlopEat42 pointed out, the Ducal title was in fact not created until 1701. Mary was apparently only on one occasions referred to as the Queen of Argyll, by an Argyllman. Even this may have been a colloquial particularist statement (kinda like Queen Elizabeth II, being called the Queen of Jamaica, by Jamaicans since she is technically the monarch of the territory). An unlikely connection at best, but...
If one were referring to a person holding title to queenship of a locality, one would refer to her as the "Queen of Argyll", not the "queen of ALL Argyll"
The song says, in antique language, "Dudes! I was in Argyll and I saw the spotted the most beautiful girl in the entire county. Words can't describe her, she was graceful like a swan, and her smile was like the sunlight at dawn. I'm going to woo her."
According to every reliable source, the words and music were written by Andy M. Stewart in the 1980's. He says he was trying to write a typical Scottish love song. The answer to just who is the "Queen of Argyll" lies with Mr. Stewart, I would guess.
@OrlopRat42 I would agree with you that the identity of the Queen of Argyll will no doubt remain hidden with Mr Stewart, if there is anyone indeed. It should be taken into account that "The Queen of" is a phrase in English that could also refer to the most beautiful or graceful lady in the region, so the title could just be honorary. Also, take into account that the song may not even be about a human; given the nature of the Celts to ascribe female characters to objects they care deeply for.
The "Queen of Argyll" referenced in this song is no woman. It is actually about a horse. Supposedly the most beautiful, graceful mare in Scotland. Hence: "and if you could have seen the mare....."
@Fimmion24 Umm... Is it not "If you could have seen her there"? He also talks about courting "her". He wouldn't "court" a horse unless he was fucking sick.
Then later on the band then added Phil Cunningham (accordion, tin whistle, harmonium, synthesizer, guitar, vocals), Alastair Donaldson, Martin Hadden (bass, guitar, piano) and Andy M. Stewart (vocals, whistle, banjo).
They did more- Gordon Jones (guitar, bodhran, vocals, bouzouki, mandola) and Bob Thomas (guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, concertina) who were later joined by a rather youthful Johnny Cunningham (fiddle, viola, mandola, vocals)
"Scottish love songs are usually about one of two things...usually the girl...and the money. I've discovered in my researches, however that there are many moving and beautiful from Scotland that don't have any girls in them." - Andy Stewart
It's a great song, whether it be Irish or Scottish (we all know it's Scottish though lol). They are both the Gaelic/Celtic lands as well as the German lands.

@OrlopRat42
Or it lies with you, if you got somebody who's in your eye's the queen of Argyll. someone who's very important if you get my meaning.
Take care, loves from Holland to all

@OrlopRat42 I would agree with you that the identity of the Queen of Argyll will no doubt remain hidden with Mr Stewart, if there is anyone indeed. It should be taken into account that "The Queen of" is a phrase in English that could also refer to the most beautiful or graceful lady in the region, so the title could just be honorary. Also, take into account that the song may not even be about a human; given the nature of the Celts to ascribe female characters to objects they care deeply for.

@OrlopRat42 Someone told me that the "Queen of Argyle" is actually a ship.

@jgmh1 Plausible theory, but i looked at the paintings of Mary I. Ugh what a homely thing so I dunno...Ha

@GenyoSevdaliya
The "Queen of Argyll" referenced in this song is no woman. It is actually about a horse. Supposedly the most beautiful, graceful mare in Scotland. Hence: "and if you could have seen the mare....."
Fimmion24 7 months ago
@Fimmion24 Umm... Is it not "If you could have seen her there"? He also talks about courting "her". He wouldn't "court" a horse unless he was fucking sick.

Argyle is indeed Scottish territory. T_T

Interestingly enough, in Andy Stewart's songbook the title is 'The Queen of Argyle'. On the Silly Wizard CD it is 'The Queen of Argyll'.

It's a great song, whether it be Irish or Scottish (we all know it's Scottish though lol). They are both the Gaelic/Celtic lands as well as the German lands.
