I should be so lucky to play so poorly. Can't speak to him leaving early or sitting on the sidewalk, but I would venture a wild guess that there wasn't a single trumpet from the school that could approached this bad performance. If so, perhaps a video would allow us to judge..

I'm fifty, and I've made some mistakes in my time...I'm so fortunate that I haven't had people chew me up and spit me out over them....at least not too many. I am so very grateful my mistakes haven't defined me as a person.

Once again, CMU students show their ignorance on YouTube. You all keep talking about this bad performance he had. If it's so bad why do you wan't to post it? If it's so terrible and left you all so hurt and embarrassed why do you want others to hear it? You all are a bunch of morons. Grow up, get a life and learn to play music, because I saw your videos without Mr. Payton and you all suck.

@eyeswatchingGod I'm a 59 year-old female. I drove 200+ miles to hear great jazz at the CMU Jazz Festival. The hall was packed with high school students, teachers and parents. Many had driven farther than me. The performance was as bad as has been posted. CMU students are not ignorant. They and the audience were insulted by this performance. I don't know what "sucky" videos you refer to. The student musicians I heard were better than the professional. I hope Payton solves his problems.

@luddite51 Sometimes HUMANS have bad days. Think about this...how many of NPs videos that are currently posted on YouTube are bad? How many of his past performances that you've attended have been bad? One bad performance doesn't mean a person has problems. You're old enough to know better.

What a bad show Nicholas Payton put on at CMU. He was high out of his mind and sounded terrible. He left in the middle of the last tune and rumor has it that he was found a half hour after the concert sitting on the sidewalk by the library. I am a senior in the music program at CMU and I was embarrassed that all the young musicians had this as the closing concert. Does anyone have audio or video from the concert that can go up?

@ksyalxe I would like to see this myself. I have had the pleasure of playing with Payton several times and let me tell you he brings it all the time. Everyone has an off night, or might be dealing with things in their life that we could never grasp. Until you have walked in his shoes who are you to judge? I don't agree coming to the gig messed up, trust me I've seen Hargrove do that too many times but Payton is an entirely different being.
