it was grouped with it sisters 3720,3721,&3722,I did have the pleaseure of riding 3723 &3722

down Cajon pass one evening in 1984, a trip I will tressure!!

  • awesome vid! pure music for the ears! Thanks for sharing ;-)

  • That's orgasmic to the ears. Thanks for posting.

  • For one that wasn't notch8 more like notch6, n second the first unit looks more like the Snoot nose SD40-2 even though u can't really tell the difference between the two. Overall 'I loved the sound of those EMD 645E3's! Great vid two thumbs up!

  • EMD 645 Turbocharged Reference Video! :D Nice

  • Yes, they were fast forties when they were new 30 years ago. Look at the nose of the lead unit, it has the long nose, and I'm sure they are regeared to the standard SD-40-2 ratio.

  • @railjames All of UP 3243-3488 were built with the 116" "snoot", of which only a small fraction were fast forties. UP 3320 was indeed one of them, but lost the status as soon as it was renumbered into the 3000 series.

  • @railjames Brother U got a nice show there! It is just crazy how much grafeetti these kids put on rail cars now. I have pics of a CSX EMD MP15 all painted up by some dumb ass gang banger.. this whole painting of rail cars has gotten out of hand. mabey they should do what my 17 year old did and join the Army infantry instead of gang baging and spray painting evrerything in sight. that train looks like the end of the world up front. Sorry i am also a foremr soldier and hate painters

  • @ussoldierrail Ok i am probably worng but the "fast 40s" were made to run with the DDA40Xs right? Not sure thought I read that. this is a great vid also. GOD BLESS you for taking the time and the weather to get this vid for us to enjoy all blessings. we share our pics for free toledoOHindependetnrailfan @photobucket and I give away free engines and gave away two free Athearn genisis Ho scale cars last week to poor people when we can afford it. I am giving a custom CSX SD40-2 to a cop

  • @ussoldierrail Sorry for another hit but Jesus these foamers cant get enough of themselves. they love to argue. becuse they have PHDs ect they live in a box in yuppie fantasy world. these yuppies have not a clue about real life that is why train orders and trians mag web site are a waste of time. they are little nerds who were talte tales and teachers pets and now they think other rail fans have to be there pets. Soem of these guys should get real RR employees are workign class people@

  • These are not Fast Forties ! Those were numbered in the 8000 series. Unless these were and were renumbered back into the 3000 series. All the Fast Forties were returned to normal gearing. The Fast Forties were geared higher to run with, and keep up with, the DDA40X Centennials. UP regeared them , and some were purchased from EMD with the higher gearing 59:18 versus 62:15 .

  • @gringo4x4do UP had four series of "fast forties" numbered UP 8000-8002, 8035-8064, 8065-8074 and 8075-8099. When they were built, they had standard 3000-series numbers reserved for them - so that when they returned to 62:15 gearing, they were all renumbered to 3240-3242, 3305-3334, 3400-3409 and 3584-3608 to fit within other units built at the same time.

  • Edit: Another series, 8003-8034, renumbered to 3243-3274.

  • Awesome Vid Dude!!

  • best sound on vid all others are distorted but wow love the sound thanks

  • so there switching cars back and forth on full throttle ? but nice video sounds great :)

  • This has to be one of the best sounding videos on you-tube hands down. Great sound !

  • This is the best sounding train video I've found on youtube!

  • It looks like the wheels in the trucks are spaced father apart then other ones I've seen?

  • @thetaxifactory It does, doesn't it ?

  • Great vid...loved the sound!

  • Fantastic! That driver knows how to handle them loco's! What a power!

  • the sound is bad ass!! does any one know how much horsepower and torq the trains have, and how much weight can they pull?

  • @davidbaker32 They are 3000 hp each. The "weight" they can pull depends on a few variables like grade's, wet rail or dry rail etc but in sumary a locomtive's pulling power is measured in tractive effort. The SD40-2 has a starting tractive effort of 92'000 LBS, so looking at it like that, it will put a pulling force of about 45 tons into the drawbar. On a flat road you could expect a pair of them to pull maybe 5 or 6 thousand tons or so. This is fairly tame by new loco standards!!!

  • @formidable38 thanks 4 the info man!!, trains are so interesting!!

  • @davidbaker32 No problem.

  • Simply awesome!

  • Turbo 2 cycle engines do sound great. Do you really think think they went went into run 8? I really hope you dont think that!

  • Superb clip, great sound, and lovely lighting :).

  • Out standing sound !!!! Captured video along with this amazing sound. Hat's off to you James.

  • mmmmmm that EMD sound just can't be beaten!!

  • Three thoughts/questions, how much did you pay to have them do that? lol

Is your brother in law the engineer?

Two Darwin people crossing the tracks?

  • @ThePostal67

I scouted the location in advance and knew they switch this way, the engineer is not related, although I think he enjoyed giving me a show, and I think at least one "Darwin" is the guy in shorts in the winter.

  • i tried to use Adobe Audition CS5 to analyze the frequency...it crashed xD

  • Nothing sounds better! Maybe some one saying "you hit the mega- lottery", or a John Bonham drum solo, this is great music to my ears! CRANK IT UP!

  • How many horsepower does the engine in a single SD40 turn out?

I guess one would blow the minds on English railfans.

Would love one, but I guess you would find it would not meet the English loading gauge. The couplings could be changed easily .

  • @NJPurling

The 16-645 in them turns out 3000hp .To put an English spin on it, their tractive effort is comparable with the EMD 12-710 engined class 66. The class 59, which is basically an SD40-2 in a UK loading gauge shell, has 300hp more and 20,000lb higher maximum TE. Having said that, having railfanned in both countries and seen plenty of them in action I know which I'd rather see and hear at the head of a heavy drag; and its not the ones which look like a shed on rails!

  • @NJPurling They're the same engines as in Class 59s, 3300 hp 16-645. The class 66s have 12-710s of about the same rating.

  • wow, great sound!! I think I creamed my pants when the engineer went to notch 8.

  • Just listen to those turbo's just scream!

  • To paraphrase Robert Duvall in the movie APOCALYSE NOW, "I love the sound, smell and sight of SD-40-2s in the morning".

  • EMD all the way.

  • sounds like some engines you may find in buses in America

  • What a great sound! Not bad to look at either!

  • What a great sound!

  • nothing can ever beat 645 and 710 sounds...

  • Sweet vid man!

  • nice video! What took you to Idaho Falls? Btw that is UP's Montana Subdivision, runs from Pocatello to Butte, did you by chance railfan UP's Poky to Nampa mainline? That is the line I railfan.
