  • the idea that its better to get cash from the government than have a broke dad around is wrong.

The dad being there is always better than anything else....

  • @AlanMolstad you can't be as simplistic as your post suggests. since the rest of us don't live in utopia, i suggest you consider the 'best' plan may not be the same as the 'best available' plan. the best plan is to provide a household that is a healthy environment. if broke dad does not contribute to that environment, he should still be there...?

  • @aj71169 the dad should be there, working hard, and being a good image of what a husband/father is.

  • @AlanMolstad and if he isn't working hard and being a good image? in that situation, is it still the case that 'The dad being there is always better than anything else...."?

  • @aj71169 yes.....one of the reasons we no longer expect dads of children to stick around is we make it easy for them to skip out.

What we should support is that the dad and mom are married, and that no matter the up's and down's in life, that family stays a family.

For richer, or poorer....sickness and in health.

Dad should always be there for his kids.

  • @AlanMolstad your vision of home life is spectaculary imaginary. dad contributes nothing positive, but he should still be there because he is 'dad'? i have no idea how 'we' make it easy for them to leave. as a person, you either want/feel you need to be there or you don't. unfortunately, there are some very big downs that indicate, no, that parent doesn't need to be a part of the family. again, if a parent is not contributing to a healthy atmosphere, they shouldn't be there.

  • @aj71169 One of the reasons dads dont know that should always stay with their family, is that they never had a dad around for them.

They have no image of what a dad is, nor have seen what a husband and wife marriage looks like.

To stop this slide, we got to support a dad and mom being always married, always together.

  • @AlanMolstad staying with your family is not a know/don't know, it's a choice. people are aware of responsibility at an early age, and without experiencing a father figure, altruism is generally inate. people who want to be there for there children, generally are. no amount of exterior support will change their perspective. and if they don't want to be there, if that means they will not be a positive contributer to the child's growth, there is no always.

  • Two parents that raise their baby together and bring up the child with an example that love is more important than money, should be the "ideal".that is promoted by Hollywood.

The idea that it's better to have only one parent if that brings in more cash (government aid) is wrong.

  • Sexually repressed retards.

  • @younghoss Seriously? Haha, sorry, but any young woman who's a bright enough thinker to be watching a show like "The West Wing" is not going to gloss over the "successful and financially stable" part. I think you're getting the audience of this show mixed up with the audience of "Jersey Shore."

  • Toby while he won't admit it has the same feelings that a child should have a mother and a father.

It wasn't wrong for this couple to express their feelings.

She's the one who got up and approached him.

Toby should have told her to back down

People in high office are role models and the way they lead their lives are open to public scrutiny.

To those who think thiis couple was wrong .

Let's say it was John Edwards instead of the Congreswoman.

    How would you feel then.

  • @bornbillsmith That the couple was wrong. That guy had no business acting judgemental. He was an idiot. I'm sorry if you think judging people without even knowing the facts like this dumbass did is a good thing, but I happen to think thats its NOT a stranger's place to publicly judge another in such a poor fashion.

  • In what sort of world would a young woman who chooses an United States representative as her role model be shallow enough to assume that having a child out of wedlock was glamorous?

  • If only they had shown Charlie knocking that guy out.

  • i wouldve told that Congresswoman to shut her feminist mouth and to fuck off

  • The world needs more women like Congresswoman Wyatt!

  • I hate people like that. They are the ones who also tell me I shouldn't wear certain tops because it "offends people", and that I should be respectful of my elders when the elder in question just elbowed me out of the way to push into the queue i'm in. Keeping in mind that I had 2 items, she had a whole basket. Congresswoman Wyatt is amazing. As Jrs89 said, she can afford to look after the kids by herself and they have a father, just not at the same address. It's not like he's not there.

  • You know it's funny...just watching the scene, there's no direct evidence that the man has actually consumed any drinks.

  • @AvadaKedavra1138 They're in a bar.

  • go jewish man go

  • something always happens when they go to California

  • Man, if only Congresswoman Wyatt was real and was a role model for young girls. I think it would be a great thing if every girl in this country was motivated to do well in school, hold public office, be independent, and wait until they're mature and financially secure enough to raise a child by themselves. Sure, you can argue having a father is important, but I think one successful and financially stable parent is a hell of a lot better than two broke dumbasses who can't take care of themselves.

  • @jrs89 Toby was always involved, he never stopped loved Andie. And he named Molly, their daughter.

  • @jrs89

I think this raises some very good points. Unfortunately, too many girls see this fictional unwed mom as ok, but don't see the " motivated to do well in school, hold public office, be independent, and wait until they're mature and financially secure enough to raise a child by themselves " that you point out should be a condition.

  • @jrs89 The better design that was intended from the start is that each child is born into a family unit with a father and a mother.

The more we tend to stray away from what was the best original idea, the more we stray away from the best overall plan for the child.

Hollywood loves to suggest that "no dad" is just as good if not better than "broke dad".

But that suggestion is in error.

A child knows that even a broke dad is better than an empty chair at breakfast.

  • @AlanMolstad A child with two dads or mums is better than a child in possession of the state.

  • ....and here's a good argument for ya.........

How many of the rest of you can name each of the following people?

The communications director from any of the 5 most recent administrations (without looking it up).

The presidents personal "body man" (as charlie is referred to).

The boyfriend of any 1st daughter since Julie Eisenhower (Nixons daughter)?

How does this couple know so much about these people?

They're certainly not on the news EVERYDAY.

  • @nudist0885 way late but to answer your initial question the republican running against the congreswoman probably made a big fuzz over her being pregnant and not letting people know.Remember toby was afraid she might get seud.

And Charlie was in the news when the president was shot as the secret service got the shooters which turn out to be white supremacist,so at least that got onto the news and people would have concluded that it was charlie, not to mention many people weren't happy about him

  • I love how surprisingly well-versed these backwards yoiks are on the whole soap drama that is the West Wing - "This is the father' and "This is the one that was with the daughter" and the whole recognizing the congresswoman from Maryland even in California or wherever they are

  • Note: I say "soap drama" with love

  • If you're going to lecture people on setting an example, you should maybe try it yourself. Those two are ranting at Andi about her being pregnant, but are themselves committing harrassment. Gotta love it.

  • Yeah, when people insult someone I love, I'm just gonna sit there and let them take it.

He also stepped back towards her, and didn't need to get in her space, but he did.

But then, it is a TV show.

  • After that guy said "Those kids deserve a father, she should have said "Well your kids deserve a sober father.

  • Which episode is this from?

  • It's from California 47th in Season 4.

  • wow talk about narrow minded.....

why is those that complain about others, are usually just as norrow minded?

maybe just maybe, there are people that don't want thier daughters aspiring to be single mothers.....even if they happen to be congress members...

jed, told toby to marry her.....and toby was even ashamed to tell the president he was having a baby(s).....

there are two sides to each issue, and both sides deserve respect...not just the side you are on..

  • There is a time and place for everything and these jack asses are welcome to their opinions but that doesn't mean they have a right to verbally assault another person, period.

He was being aggressive and moving into her personal space which he had no right to do either. Toby was simply defending her.

Plus her comments about Charlie seals the deal that they are simply part of the 'ignorant tight ass club'.

  • watch it again...without your blinders on and you will see....the man never moved towards her, in fact she moved towards him. it was toby that escalated the situation.

there was no verbal assault, they are all public people that work for us.

  • I don't have blinders on. Yes, she stood up next to him but he moves in with his 'explanation' of why he believes he is so much more moral than she is and is already in her 'personal space'. I would be concerned about her in that situation. In an instant the already irritate man or his wife could have raised his fist to hit her, since he was already intoxicated and irrational.

  • He had no right to heckle her in the first place just because they are public servants doesn't mean they aren't allowed a civil private conversation. She wasn't breaking any laws moral or civil, so she decided to have children, big deal.

  • actually he does have a right, and its guaranteed by the US Constitution.

  • All the Constitution guarantees is that government will not stop free speech. You don't have the right to harass people.

  • where does the constitution give you a right to harass and badger people?

  • @doubleg137 Article 1 section 1

  • @doubleg137 article 1 of the Bill of rights

  • He could have found other ways to voice his displeasure in writing letters, sending emails,TV interviews etc.

The President said that Catholicism works for him and Abby but that doesn't mean it has to be what works for Toby or the mother to be. He was saying that more as a running joke because the staff was trying to get them back together.

  • he could have, but he chose to say it to her face....freedom of speech means freedom for all, and all points of view not just your own.

  • They are being rude and snotty not only to her but to Toby and Charlie by referring to them in that matter. Their opinion wasn't under question, their attitude was.

Don't like her example then don't vote for her. Elected officials have the same rights as regular citizens.

  • I don't know what laws you are aware of but freedom of speech means that you are allowed to peacefully, lawfully voice your opinion, not threatening or aggressive. To verbally assault someone.

There are ways to legally voice your views one way or another that doesn't include disorderly conduct and just being a jackass about it.

Those freedoms you talk about also pertain to Toby and her so he was impeding on her liberties.

  • Um, did you watch this show at all?

Andi didn't get pregnant from a one-night stand. She got pregnant via artificial insemination. It was a conscious choice and I doubt that anyone would have talked like that if they knew the circumstances.

  • Fact:

Children are best placed under the care of parents that love them. The number of parents is not nearly as important.

    Good day, sir.

  • Again: the number of parents is not as important as the affection the children receive.

Would it be better to have children raised by one loving parent and one who is not loving but remains present only because it is expected of them?

I'd prefer a dutiful and loving nanny...whether their name is "Rosa-Maria," or "Tony Danza."

Ah, and I believe that daytime TV is also the product of very poor network planning, and little more.

    Good day, sir.

  • I wouldn't mind hiring Tony Danza for a Nanny! LOL Nice reference to the grand 80's!

  • which season was this particular episode in?

  • season 4.

  • ahh man i cant belive you missed the punch up that comes right after this lol but still fun to watch

  • Damn right it's Congresswoman Wyatt

  • I still can't believe there was a fuss about Sam sleeping with a call girl. A) she seemed like a very bright, very consenting, friendly young woman who went to bed with Sam for personal attraction besides money. B) Sam didn't know until after the fact and even if he did, it would have seemed again a rather friendly business transaction. C) One way or another, sexual relationships come with a price.

  • True enough, but things can be misinterpreted and they can be spun; and as Aaron Sorkin himself wrote, "the American people have a funny way of deciding what is and is not their business."

  • @Flowbee79 - The thing is, the public wouldn't have believed that he didn't pay her, and it would have been pretty difficult for him to convince the public that he didn't.

I'm totally for legalizing prostitution, but in the meantime it is illegal, and it's going to be a scandal if people believe that a prominent White House official broke the law.

  • please tell me that guy gets beaten the shit out of cause if he talked to the mother of my future children that way i would hav to quit work for the amount of things i would impart upon him

  • There's a brawl where Toby and Charlie get thrown in jail till they make bail.

  • There is a slight shoving incident in which the elitist lush goes down. You don't see it, but it's a far cry from Rocky.

  • I don't think Sorkin does himself any favors with these obviously biased and exaggerated caricatures of conservatives he does. They damage his credibility and therefore his message. I'm not saying there aren't any people like that, but to Sorkins mind it's every last one of them.

  • Not really, he does hand other Republicans and conservatives a good deal of credit. But there are people who are conservatives who think they have a right to tell you how to run your personal life, and get haughty when you tell them where the line is drawn. They don't, but they sure think they do.

  • There are some exceptions like Ainsley, and that guy that was dating Donna briefly, but for the most part they come off as some combination of Pat Robertson, David Duke, Ricky Bobby, Gordon Gekko, and possibly Sgt. Tackleberry from the Police Academy movies.

  • said ppl do exist tho and run their mouths. Besides this dude was wasted too lol

  • there are many other conservatives portrayed in a good light though. Vinick for one

  • @PumaOPumaOPumaO Also Ainsley Hayes.

  • @emmyjo720 And the dude Matthew Perry played.

  • @PumaOPumaOPumaO Walken is also portrayed well if you ask me. There are prick Democrats in the show like Hoynes and Russell

  • and the counsel (obviously inspired by Fred Thompson) who told a senator that he was what was killing the party...

  • Having been there, done that (and gotten wiser) I can assure you that there are plenty of conservatives who would've gone exactly the way this couple did, had they come across this group in a public place. The people who think that they know best how everyone else should conduct their personal lives rarely shy from a chance to tell everyone all about it. Or, when they can, vote to install their beliefs as law.

  • did sam win?? i don't remember this season

  • no, he lost.

  • What did that woman mean by saying, "This is the one who was with the daughter"? Without knowing the context of what she said, I would have interpreted it as overtly racist.

  • I guess they're republicans. She's referring to Charlie dating Zoe, the president's daughter. It's an attempt to degrade and belittle the White House.

  • Well, now I gotta to watch the entire episode.

  • I think when she says, the one, I think she is referring to "the one" in the Bartlett gang. It's not an attack on him as a black guy overtly, but an attack on him as one of the Bartlett crew, who arch-conservative might see as more as a gang than an administration, though in someways there are similarities. Sam is "the one" who dated a call girl, even though there's nothing primarily wrong with that. Josh is "the one" who said a reverend was a messiah being indicted for tax fraud. Etc.

  • No. It is a racial slur because Charlie dated and later married the President's white daughter, Zoey.

  • I don't think it's racial. I think it is more of a slur on the Bartlett administration as a group or gang. I think they find the Bartlett "gang" to be annoying as a group, since the gang is certainly more liberal and open-minded than these narrow-minded snobs.

  • It can't be racist, because she described the white (albeit Jewish) Toby as "THE father" then goes on to describe Charlie as "THE one who...". It isn't racist, it's just snobbery. These are the kind of people who would say "one" instead of "I" as an affectation, thinking it makes them sound sophisticated and educated when it just makes them sound like try-hards.

They're using 3rd-person descriptions because it's how they view the world. At a distance.

    'cause they're, you know, snobs.

  • The best way with dealing with snobs like this is to avoid using phrases like "I'm sorry" or "If its alright with you". Especially when you're in a confrontation with them like this. Or anytime for that matter. People like that are so full of themselves because of their status and money that saying those words merely empowers them.

  • i love the clip from the next episode where they are being bailed out of jail

  • right!

i just uploaded it under the title "The West Wing - Toby and Charlie make bail"! :-)

  • I wanted them to show Toby and Charlie crush this clown...

  • I dont remember this episode...what one is this clip from?

  • 4x16 The California 47th

when they went to California to help out Sam.

  • Thanks! I did indeed miss this episode...
