@skaterflip88 ya, she has a set route she like to go every time. She is always all business, all the time... almost like she's on watch and doing her duty to check out the perimeter of the neighborhood. no fetch, no play, just PULL!
fair play that is a class idea because i have a dog and i no how boring it is walking her and you do not go up any hills and instead of the dog walking evryehere it can run . :) !!!!
i used to take my 3 dogs running on concrete but i was worried about their joints but i'll ask my vet but im now taking them on grass so its easier on their joints
@36thUlsterDivision1 Correct, this speed does not damage my dogs joints. She was built for speed. It would do more damage if she laid around all day. Albeit, I do not over exert her and our daily course lasts 7 - 8 minutes. I consulted with my vet before putting her into a harness and she receives regular check ups, receiving praise for her health. Another benefit is I never have to cut her nails due to normal organic wear and tear. I recommend consulting a vet with any specific reservations.
@kakness started her out as a puppy w/ training classes, learning how to heel, walk, come, sit, watch, obey commands, etc. Then, at 1yr old we got the harness & she started pulling as we ran, walked, hiked. Progressed to cross-country skiing and biking. She is a natural puller/sled dog & has a personality for work, no play/fetch. So she responds well to direction and praise. The skateboard was a natural progression. She's very aware & conscious of what I ask her to do but has taken years :)
@kakness what you have there is a retriever mix. both traits are bird dogs. so it might be more difficult to get your dog to pull then it did for him to train his dog to pull since his is part husky which are bred to pull. I hope you can achieve what you are after.
@10huskys started her out as a puppy w/ training classes, learning how to heel, walk, come, sit, watch, obey commands, etc. Then, at 1yr old we got the harness & she started pulling as we ran, walked, hiked. @10huskys so our vet recommended puppy training, and waiting to put her into a harness until one year old to ensure full proper growth & development. we did two sessions of puppy class in the first year. by then she understood commands on leash and couldn't wait to run. her instinct is to work and pull. i think it makes her feel fulfillment, exhilaration and then she can finally be calm. she is 6 and a half years old now. it seems breed type and personality will influence how long it may take -
pretty nice bro, i have a dog is a mixed of pitbull and dalmatian, she is strong but got tired really fast. plus when she see and a squirrel she goes nuts... haha some advice? check my video out in my page take care
probably dumb question...when you want to turn somewhere do you like pull to that direction or do you always take the same route so he knows where hes going?
@NewGunner84 great question - both actually. We take the same route each time and she always knows where to go. But when i have to guide her around something like a car, i'll pull and give her the verbal command "watch" which she knows means she needs to pay attention to what i'm doing. This can get a little hairy on a board but i've worked on the watch command before while walk/running and on a bike... So the concept transferred well while boarding. Hope that helps. Have fun!
Ya Mon ! way cool bro....Im gonna start doing this with a dog ( Boss ) that I'm getting from a friend who is moving out of the country. Boss is a 5 y/o Pitt... I was told that he owner that Boss was good at LB'n like 3 years ago...Any tips for me on a board or starting out with him...Thx bro.
@TheWelderPJ Thanks Mon! I like any of the long boards bc of the stability. The shorter boards speed wobble and can be hard to control at high speeds if the dog gets distracted. I use a Gravity Board. Another good one is Sector 9. I bet Boss can't wait to get after it again :-) Good luck and have fun!
how fast do you get up 2? we clocked my mates dog at about 35/40 km once while being towed on my long board. and then when she sees a cat she must get up to about 50km lol
@jacobnz2 Nice! the faster the better, right?! We recently had a car follow us and clocked in at 25mph (40kph) down the straight away... but 50kph?? thats hauling!
I purchased the harness and rig at Rea's Harness Shop in Anchorage, AK in 2005. Unfortunetly, the shop has closed and I have yet to find another source for a harness of this quality. If I do, I'll be sure to forward along the info.
this is an awsome way for dogs to exercise. unfortunatly my dog is a rot that weights a good 50lbs more than me... not to mention my lack of stability. looks hella fun tho! great song for this btw
The longer the board the better in my opinion for more stability and less speed wables. This board is a Gravity Longboard. But any board will do. Longboards also seem more steady especially if the dog tends to weave back and forth, etc.
My dog pulls me pretty well, I use a regular style harness, how come you rigged up what looks like a purpose built harness? Will i hurt my dog by not using a special harness?
I think any harness is better than just using a collar, obviously bc it distributes the weight more evenly along the dog body and is not choking. The crossback harness I have was designed for sled dog mushing and attaches to the lead at the tail. But, in the past I've used a harness that attaches mid-back. As you mentioned, your dog pulls you pretty well. And I think that is really what matters, that the dog is enjoying the activity in a way that minimizes the chance of injury/stress on you both
We bought the harness from Rae's Harness Shop in Anchorage Alaska in 2004. Rae's has since closed but they made really good harnesses. I have been looking myself for new ones. Try searching the dog mushing sites as I know the harness we have was intended for mushing. I really like the crossback style b/c it distributes the weight evenly across the dog's body... much healthier for her. Good luck and keep it up - I bet your dog LOVES to pull too! I'll be sure to let you know if I find anything...
hey I do that with my dog too and I was wondering where you got that harness. I got this one harness but its more of a serious sled dog harness and my dog hates it.
Rayfield - that looks like so much fun, just watch out for pebbles, I mean the escondido rocks in the roadway - not the girl at the adult book store named Pebbles....
AWESOME!!!!!!! did the same for 13 yrs.. 2 miles/day with my Vizsla. she lived to be 17 yrs old and was still pulling!! got a black lab now and just got my new wheels and trucks today. Will be street slaloming sunday!! Can't Wait!
