  • I worked with Bernstein also. A great conductor for sure, but not - to my way of thinking - in the same league as Abbado

  • I was privileged to work with Abbado for several years. This video reminds me just how great a conductor he was and is and always will be to those fortunate enough to experience his performances. His control, his passion, his sympathy, his amazing memory can never surely be surpassed.

  • @dollynapattaya except for Lenny :)

  • I cannot begin to count how many times I've watched this incredible finale. Thank you for posting it.

  • On first hearing this symphony it changed my life and since then 20 yrs ago I still hold fascination with Mahler. His music articulates what is inside of all of us - we hear, we understand it's about everything in Life.

  • What a wonderful symphony. Just Beautiful.

  • I'm beginning to think that people who don't believe in God simply haven't listened to Mahler 2.

  • @Atreus21 I dont believe in god but i love mahlers music ._.

  • @Atreus21 lmao I'm a steadfast atheist and this is one of my favorite symphonies!

  • @gregapage Well, I am not an atheist at all, and I got into this discussion late, but I think there is a big misconception about what Mahler was thinking when he wrote "Resurrection." If you read the words that Mahler himself wrote into the choral part, not just the poem on which most the rest of the text is based, you'll find that he had an idea of resurrection that is based on his own efforts...very different from the Christian message.

  • @Atreus21

I believe that Mahler was enough of a genius to write this masterpiece without your god.

  • He certainly was, but I believe that he himself sought his inspiration in Him...

  • @Atreus21 absolutely

  • @Atreus21 I'm a atheist and Mahler is my idol.

  • @gera1262 and I'm a staunch Christian and there's no reason why I can't have Mahler as my idol too. I read into the music my own feelings as many people do. Mahler's composition was not a selfish inward composition as he wrote for all of us to ENJOY it in whatever we choose.

  • @Atreus21 you are right...people who don't believe in Mahler simply haven't listened to Mahler

  • @addi2x06

But if you disbelieve in Mahler, after you believed in him....

  • @Atreus21 I agree.

  • NO BODY BEATS BERNSTEIN!!!!

  • @Bamchucknorris This guy beats Bernstein.

  • @Atreus21 no.

  • Great.

  • Always with the Mahler raising of the horns. -)

  • This is the greatest music ever written but it is more meaningful if you can read the subtitles which are more inclined to bring tears.

  • Astounding! Also, I love Abbado's facial expressions in every piece he does with his mouth kind of hanging open.

  • @LilDrummerBoy74 When I listen to a good performance of Mahler I have to remind myself to keep my mouth closed too.

  • That applause was pretty weak!

  • @gregapage If you could see the entire DVD you would be treated to the audience going bonkers.

  • Definitely a solid performance at the highest level of professionalism but I'm not as moved as I have been by one or two others, at least in terms of this segment. I really dug Anna Larson.

  • This performance has ruined all subsequent performances of this piece for me. I just can't enjoy them as much when I have already heard this one. If only I could have witnessed this live.

  • Astounding.

  • who the f**k disliked this beautiful piece?? >:(

  • 11:17 is truly a beautiful melody.

  • Abbado is feeling this in his heart and depth of soul and it grips him, for sure, making it a masterpiece of his own soul and the skills of all who themselves

have to be going home with this like a daggar into their heart and soul. That's all I can say about this.

  • Can't write easily, too much tears in my eyes...

  • Truely this is one of those very rare pieces that can move you to tears.

  • Soberbio, grandioso.

  • what a choir

  • I first studied this with Abbado in Munich when he rehearsed and played it with the BRSO in the early 1970's

and it has remained "my Mahler 2nd" ever since

  • Doesn't get ant better than this!!

  • Abbado sure knows how to do his job.

  • This symphony never fails to send shivers down my spine. This is the type of music that makes men into gods. Mahler is not dead. He is immortal. His music will last forever, while men still have emotions.

  • @OisirM Very well said. How fascinating that Mahler had the "premonition"(if u will) that it would be our time when his music was accepted and embraced.

  • @OisirM Just home from a Mahler 2 with Sydney Symphony & Ashkenazy at the Opera House . It was fabulous but needed more. This is music for the soul and the world would be a better place if we could make everyone listen to it. Tears of joy.

  • gandios. und was fällt dem publikum ein? erstmal laut losschreien. kann man danach nicht mal schweigen?

  • Absolutely stunning!

  • Absolutely stunning!

  • I love the conductor's little smile at 11:08, as if he's thinking "this is so epic and I'm in charge of it".

  • finally, an ending that i enjoyed as much as Klemperor. thanks for putting this up

  • Not the biggest orchestra / choir I have seen performing this wonderful piece but they still did a great job! We never once got to see the timpanists.

  • @loganswell Quality > quantity :)

  • He is risen.

  • SIN PALABRAS!!!!!!!

  • Bravo Maestro Abbado! Magnificent! What a musical triumph!

  • These are the greatest moments in all the literature and the greatest of all performances!!! It doesn't get any better... except that if the sub-titles were turned on, the cognitive emotional impact of the material is greater if you are to experience the implications of the inevitable Ressurrection.

  • This performance brings tears each and everytime I listen and watch this. Thank god for Mahler. What a treasure.

  • That cut off at the end was quite something by Maestro Abbado. Just awesome!

  • beautiful

  • wauw... I can't belief my earns!!!

  • in tears with awe from 10:35 and all the way until the last note fades out in the air.

  • You are absolutely right

  • 8:39 Stromberg?

  • @SchwarzeDose21 LOL !!!

  • Excelent...

  • I liked this twice ...

  • A great performance ... such power controlled then unleashed...

  • Abbado announced his "Resurrection"!

  • @changjiang001 To the best of my knowledge he hasn't died yet.

  • @SirGlennGould and goes strong!
