I was privileged to work with Abbado for several years. This video reminds me just how great a conductor he was and is and always will be to those fortunate enough to experience his performances. His control, his passion, his sympathy, his amazing memory can never surely be surpassed.
On first hearing this symphony it changed my life and since then 20 yrs ago I still hold fascination with Mahler. His music articulates what is inside of all of us - we hear, we understand it's about everything in Life.
@gregapage Well, I am not an atheist at all, and I got into this discussion late, but I think there is a big misconception about what Mahler was thinking when he wrote "Resurrection." If you read the words that Mahler himself wrote into the choral part, not just the poem on which most the rest of the text is based, you'll find that he had an idea of resurrection that is based on his own efforts...very different from the Christian message.
@gera1262 and I'm a staunch Christian and there's no reason why I can't have Mahler as my idol too. I read into the music my own feelings as many people do. Mahler's composition was not a selfish inward composition as he wrote for all of us to ENJOY it in whatever we choose.
Definitely a solid performance at the highest level of professionalism but I'm not as moved as I have been by one or two others, at least in terms of this segment. I really dug Anna Larson.
This performance has ruined all subsequent performances of this piece for me. I just can't enjoy them as much when I have already heard this one. If only I could have witnessed this live.
Abbado is feeling this in his heart and depth of soul and it grips him, for sure, making it a masterpiece of his own soul and the skills of all who themselves
have to be going home with this like a daggar into their heart and soul. That's all I can say about this.
This symphony never fails to send shivers down my spine. This is the type of music that makes men into gods. Mahler is not dead. He is immortal. His music will last forever, while men still have emotions.
@OisirM Very well said. How fascinating that Mahler had the "premonition"(if u will) that it would be our time when his music was accepted and embraced.
@OisirM Just home from a Mahler 2 with Sydney Symphony & Ashkenazy at the Opera House . It was fabulous but needed more. This is music for the soul and the world would be a better place if we could make everyone listen to it. Tears of joy.
Not the biggest orchestra / choir I have seen performing this wonderful piece but they still did a great job! We never once got to see the timpanists.
These are the greatest moments in all the literature and the greatest of all performances!!! It doesn't get any better... except that if the sub-titles were turned on, the cognitive emotional impact of the material is greater if you are to experience the implications of the inevitable Ressurrection.
I worked with Bernstein also. A great conductor for sure, but not - to my way of thinking - in the same league as Abbado

I believe that Mahler was enough of a genius to write this masterpiece without your god.

He certainly was, but I believe that he himself sought his inspiration in Him...

This is the greatest music ever written but it is more meaningful if you can read the subtitles which are more inclined to bring tears.

Astounding! Also, I love Abbado's facial expressions in every piece he does with his mouth kind of hanging open.
