Im getting alot of codec errors for my files, even for the times when I can edit the video, the audio is usually a flatline, any idea wut may be causing this?
@Gabpop1 That's the problem - Cinelerra doesn't handle FLV or MP4. What I do for both these is use WinFF to convert them to MPG or DV depending on the resolution (720x480 NTSC goes to DV, any other resolution goes to MPG). WinFF is a GUI front end for ffmpeg and I'd go as far as saying it's absolutely indispensable! Looks like Lumeria (the new CV project) may have these features. An alpha .DEB package is available right now but I haven't messed with it yet.
@vaasnaad someone has made quicktime for cinelerra so that it can handle mp4. i haven't looked into this for a while (i've sadly been using windows lately) and i don't remember where it is hosted, but i am certain you can use it. it'd be much better than to change formats too often. if you're editing compressed video you are actually compressing the video 3 times (the initial compression, convert to mpg, then the final export).
Hmm..This looks a great tutorial so far, however, i can't seem to load my wmvs to the media section. It gives a message saying it's an unknown format. Any ideas on how to fix this?
@pos6666666 Convert it to MPG format. If you check out my aspect ratio tutorial, I have a mencoder script you can use. Also, WinFF is a really easy way to do conversions and you can get it from the Ubuntu repos.
@vaasnaad Oh, and also, when i play the video in Cinelerra, for some reason it's sped up a lot, and theres no audio. Any idea why it might be doing this?
@BeliXBellaXTraicion Some encoding will work. However, some won't and I guess that's you're running into. In that case, just use the DVD conversion script I use for Mencoder mentioned in my aspect ratio tutorial. That's what I do!
great tutorial. i had experience with other editors like premier elements, so i decided i would try this one out, and these tutorials help. But i have a question. I disabled play every frame like you suggested, and when i went to play back my video, it played a 13 second clip in under a second, and skipped like 99% of the frames.
I had a feeling this setting had something to do with it, so i enabled play every frame, and now it plays smoothly. why is this happening? I could see how disabling that feature would help, especially on slower computers or compositing effects, but why is it not working for me? I am using the open GL, and i am editing in 720p (i have a feeling this might be part of the problem)
@Polird Yeah, 720p is probably a large part of the problem. Have you tried a different render method other than OpenGL? I know I said it's the way to go but if there's one or two hooks the OS doesn't like, it can really gum up the works...
It almost makes me sad that rebooting fixes squirrely bugs in Linux as well as Windows. But... that's standard procedure #1 in many cases!
I'm a big fan of the h264 encoding quality so that looks like a great way to go to me if Cinelerra takes it. In fact, I'm going to have to try that soon! What do you render out as?
Oh, I render them, just like you said something like Linux Quicktime, with .mov as the filename, then I convert it to another format again, like AVI or MP4 so that other dvd or mp4 players can play them. Quite a hassle actually, is there any other Rendering Format that Cinelerra can make? Like AVI or MPG? Like in your tutorial, it only makes MOV, right?
Hi, thanks for making a very clear video and answering the comments, it just shows you know your tutorial very well.
Can I ask a question?
When loading files to Cinelerra, I use mp4, but when I compose it or edit it already, it just plays a MONO audio, but when I play the original video on other Movie Players, there are 2 audios.
What can I do so Cinelerra can use 2ch or stereo on my videos. Thanks.
PS Also there's an error about Quicktime if I load the files in Cinelerra.
Make sure you don't have "play every frame" checked. That'll do it every time. Assuming you mean slow motion. If you're just getting low framerates, it kind of depends on system specs and what you're doing.
Glad you enjoyed! Hmmm... seems there's need for a tutorial on that subject! Certain types of files, Cinelerra doesn't do. When I run into one, I either convert to DV using Kino if it will import, or use mencoder (avidemux will do this too) to convert to MPG or AVI. I've got a script for it I'll send to you and I'll get a tutorial up soon on the matter!

All you're doing is anything you want to, without explaining how you did it. It's not a turotial, it's just a running commentary.

@Polird and i also get a lot of this error:
vitual int FileMOV::read_frame(VFrame*): quicktime_read_frame/quicktime_decode_video failed, result:
Is this because i am using a bad video format?

Hi vaasnaad, good news, just by Restarting Cinelerra, my problem was fixed.
Thanks. I hope others will benefit from this.
By the way, here's my settings: I have wmv, avi, mpg, mp4, mkv, m4v, etc...
1st: I convert them in Avidemux:
video: mp4 h264
audio: aac
container: mp4
Then I load them to Cinelerra, Cinelerra seems to accept them properly.
I can render it as well with no difficulties.
Do you have a comment on my process? Any feedback from you, "the Master" is appreciated. THANKS. =)

But I have a tiny problem ... I have WMV fires that I want to add tom my project. It seems this type of files is not supported by Cinelerra !
