  • precursor to the film noir genre. When Fritz Lang make movies like this, more than half of the world's population was illiterate!

  • Does anyone know the name of the song the murderer was whistling when he was writing the letter to the newspaper?

  • @UnbaisedGamer probably in the hall of the mountain king

  • Comment removed

  • great crime thriller, i still think critics seem to overblow allot of old movies(especially Citizen Kane)and undersell a lot of modern movies (especially from Directors such as Michael Mann/ Sergio Leone etc) but this is one of the old one that deserves it's acclaim.

  • @JKreviews Hey, I used to be GroovieBuff. That's perfectly fine if you prefer this movie over Avatar. You don't have to like every film. I have friends who didn't enjoy Citizen Kane and they're still very intelligent individuals (I still give them slack about it, though). Likewise, liking Avatar doesn't make one's input on film any less intelligible. It's a matter of how you present your views and opinions that make them count, my friend. (8^D

  • M

    MATURE

LIMEHOUSE TV AERIAL NEIGHBOUR PASSION SETTLEMENT LIMEHAUS

  • Sorry, but the whistle is by Fritz Lang. Lorre wasn't capable of whistling...

  • The term "Anti-Semite" was coined in 1879 by German Journalist Wilhelm Marr in a pamphlet called ,"The Victory of Germandom over Jewry".Wilhelm Marr is credited with having founded "The Leaque of Anti-Semitism which as well was formed in 1879.

  • The Letter "M" should be referenced as to its place. It is directly correlated to the following words Sem.(the plural is Semite)Shem(Son of noah). There maybe a case of mistaken identity as both The picture and others past and present sought to identify who these persons were. The Letter here is "M" (Murder)and is clearly a witness to a marked man not as it were the "Star of David".The mention as to "The Star of David" was a reference to what was required by Nazi Germany.

  • the description is wrong about the whistling. Lorre coulnt whistle and Lang whistled for him

  • Watched this in German Club last week

  • This movie is pretty cool looking. :O

Also, pretty sure Hitler watched this movie a couple of times.

  • @mypizzaisburnt I cannot speak for Hitler. But it is mentioned in Der Ewige Jude.

"The Jew Lorre in the role of a child murderer. Not the murderer but the victim is guilty, according to this film, which presents the criminal sympathetically, to gloss over and excuse the crime."

Google "Still Images from Der ewige Jude"

  • @mypizzaisburnt Actually it was banned by the Nazis in 1934, because they found it offensive. I guess that's when Lang and Lorre fled the country.

  • google chrome>M(minecraft)>this video

  • i think M is more entertaining then most movies these days, it just has so many artistic values to it. why do people hate black and white movies so much, they contain some of the best images i have ever seen! but then again, some people have different tastes then others, so i wont blame them for not liking b&w movies.

  • this film just looks so slapstick lmao

  • Peter Lorre was unable to whistle. The one who hear in the movie was a dubbing performed by Fritz Lang himself.

  • @whatusee06 If you hear Fritz Lang whistle, therefore... you'd better run.

  • wow this movie is rly....old.

  • i typed m to get here

  • how will people react if they remade this?

  • Truly great film. The atmosphere is amazing. Phew...

  • can anyone write in german what does the little girl say in the beggining of the video?

  • @domino19x TV tropes translates it with Just you wait, it won't be long. The man in black will soon be here. With his cleaver's blade so true. He'll make mincemeat out of you!

The she says "You're out" to the girl she's pointing at.

  • @domino19x She's talking about the unknown murderer saying he'll chop you into little bits.

  • Incredible film. Peter Lorre is a god. This was dubbed in French yet Lorre re-shot his confession scene in the French language. He was an original.

I recommend the 2-disc special edition, a very clean print w/ many extra features.

  • @ur1sab I recommend the Masters of Cinema Blu-ray, incredible audio, visuals, and extra's!

  • "Thats a nice ball you have there...

    and what's your name?"

This film is one of the most suspenseful I've ever seen in my life.

  • I really want to see this movie...hope there are more words than in the trailer. :)

  • Is this the original trailer?? This is one of the best trailers I've seen in ages and it's over 80 years old!

No Narration, awesome background music, great editting.

  • @aeopmusic No, its a fan-made trailer. The message at the end is in portuguese, and it credits Mario Cameira for the scenes editing, made in May 2007.

  • Fraggle Rock led me here, since one of the minor characters in that show was based on a character from this film.

  • @Dulcimerist

They named a character in Fraggle Rock after someone in a film about a serial child murderer?!

Fraggle Rock is officially more hard core than I thought.

  • Just watched it today. It's great! It starts off a bit slow but then it really picks up. The final scene was intense and thought provoking.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=gnKvBCFT-_g

  • Great film, makes you think alot. In particular about death penalty ...

I'm French, and here it's avoided. And I'm happy it is! Humans should never kill each other.

  • 2:20- 2:23

"This is the proper way to masturbate!!!"

  • Just you wait, it won't be long.

The man in black will soon be here.

With his cleaver's blade so true.

He'll make mincemeat out of YOU!

  • Just to get an idea on how fantastic this trailer is, the first few times I watched it I completely forgot it was in German.

  • this film was so far ahead of its time...in story, in acting, in camera movements, and even foul language lol. I saw it once plan to see it again, and it's already one of my favorites.

  • Pretty good movie. It also is a precursor to all these police and organized crime films we see nowadays.

  • "You have no idea what it's like to be me!"

  • Goddamn. Once again i find a sample used in my favourite music.

    Wumpscut - Our fatal Longing.

  • peter lorre once said that this movie disturbed him and haunted him everywhere he went.

  • Is this available in English? Good trailer!

  • This looks interesting; I want to see it.

Is there any symbolism in the movie?

  • @PrettyVixen91 Is there any movie without symbolism?

  • @Jilianvrytime Probably most of the movies made today, lol.

  • very good trailer M is a masterpiece-ein meilenstein,seiner zeit weit vorraus

  • Very disturbing film!

  • Who'd have thought they'd make one of the all-time best serial killer movies within a few years of the introduction of sound to the cinema?

  • Very nice!

  • This film is a true masterpiece, both in the underlying themes of the story - what happens when mobs and despotic authority, in the name of 'law and order' replace true democratic institutions (think the current teabagger movement and the mosque issue in New York), and in the film techniques used in its creation. I remember when I first saw this film, I couldn't believe something so technically advanced was shot in 1930, it looked more like a film of the late30's or 40's or even 1950's.

  • Lang has made this film in 1931 - the Nazis were about to get the power and might in Germany. Lang produced this film in order to show how the "Weimarer Republic" (form of state BEFORE the Nazis) is about to be overrun.

  • Thanks for posting!

Gone straight to my "must watch" list.

  • MASTERPIECE - many thanks for this upload.

  • @cheifguggletram this shit happens to be the greatest movie ever

  • @cheifguggletram It's a trailer for the movie M. Did you miss the title of the video?

  • <u>hello</u>

  • obra perfecta cool :D Edvard Grieg - In the Hall of the Mountain King

  • great movie

  • @luciferoth

This film is an artifact. If you made any effort to open your mind to film as art rather than entertainment, you would undoubtedly find depth in M that very few modern day films can stand up to. I would like to argue that the fact that it is in b&w makes it a BETTER film. Although M has subs, it relies more on visual storytelling than pure dialogue. You might have to think a little harder when viewing it but some thinking would do you some good for a change.

    M > Avatar

    =O?!?!?!?

  • @MattTheMadHat i agree. where can i find this movie? it looks interesting

  • @torresxrocks you should check your local library or netflix. hope this helps!

  • @torresxrocks if you download a program called 'miro' off filehippo you can watch the whole film and a few other Fritz Lang ones. Safe and easy. Enjoy.

  • @bluenail90 thanks! i'll try that

  • @MattTheMadHat You win the internet today. I agree. Shadows and Lighting. Sound used as subjective metaphor and symbol. It's a great work of art. I reccommend Metropolis as well (but thats gasp, silent and modern audiences would shoot me). Hey, could be worse, it could be M in 3D with a soundtrack by Fall Out Boy.

  • @Fragile0Still HAHAHAHAHHAHA m in 3d. riot

  • @MattTheMadHat So glad to hear that said, as an aspring director with these beliefs, we need people thinking more like you do, to understand and appreciate our work.

  • @MattTheMadHat "M>Avatar=O?!?!?!?" Just wondering what that means?

  • @MattTheMadHat the "pure cinema" that hitchcock referred to so often. it's a leftover from the silent filmmaking era that is so lost today

  • @MattTheMadHat Color does not mean a film is better, nor does B/W. I agree that B/W photography is beautiful, but you have to remember that crap came out then, just as it comes out now. As with quality. It existed then, and it exists now. You can like gems such as this AND enjoy films such as Avatar without feeling inferior to the artsy film crowd. Films may not be the same as they were, but all we can do is share these gems with others and respect the work that goes into modern films.

  • In any case, this film is an absolute masterpiece. Fritz Lang is a credit to his medium and to Germany. Truely fantastic.

  • @luciferoth closeminded idiot. low quality. HAH

  • I'm sure the music here is not from the original trailer.

  • is this the first film to use the tunes from the classic music / not only Grieg, but also Mozart/ or was a film before "M"?

  • Director ,Film and even the trailer ahead of its time

  • the movie m was based on the child murder peter kurten, also nicknamed the vampire of dusseldorf. also, not sure if its true or legend but i heard he decapitated a swan and masterbated wgile it bled

  • Was wir einmal hatten an großartigen Schauspielern,Regiesseuren,Produzenten:(

Heutzutage wird auf kommerzieller Basis wenig gutes geboten meiner Meinung nach.

    Ausnahmen bestätigen die Regel.

    Siehe Dani Levy,Buck,Akin etc.

  • :30 you have a lovely ball. What's your name?

1:06 10,000 Mark reward: who is the murderer?

1:22 The murderer writes a letter

  • I love seeing Mickey Mouse in a German candy store. ( 1:48 )

  • I did a poetical translation:

Just a moment, just you wait, the

    Boogeyman will come for you

With his little butcher's blade, then

He'll make goulash out of ...YOU!

    ...you're out

  • Great new book (Did these stories really happen?) at amazon has great new section on Fritz Lang and his movies!

  • stimpy you eeedddioot!

  • You look that up after reading the comment about this movie on another vid? Haha, same here. It's intersting how they put that in there.

  • Haha! That's the worst spamming I've ever seen! You don't even get your facts right in the post!

  • I'm doing my skilled work about this movie and which part Berlin plays in it. I love these old movies. If anyone has got some sources or book tips for me, I would be very glad! Thanks! =)

  • LONG LIVE FRITZ LANG!

  • he's dead though

  • das lied heisst "In the Hall of the Mountain King"...

  • Wie heisst das lied bitte ich brauch das

  • I don't speak German, but I believe it's

    In der Halle des Bergkönigs

(which is, in English, In the Hall of the Mountain King, and in Norwegian I Dovregubbens hall)

It's a central leitmotif of the film.

  • Yes it's The hall of the moutain king.

Fritz Lang whistled this at the montage

  • Right back at you sir.

  • That's non-sense. This conversation could go on forever. I believe in root causes, which is where all problems come from. An it's worth noting that all problems are technical. Every man is the same, just with different genetic coding and conditioning. In reality all of us are the same person. Your response to what I have to say is one conditioned and will only come from what you've understood through out your years of understanding and nothing else. No such thing as evil or good, just productive

  • Well your wrong, unless your in reference to insanity or mental retardation. If Adolf Hitler was born in America with an American family, chances are he wouldn't have developed into a Nazi. Same as to you if you were born in Nazi Germany under German parents, you'd be a Nazi. Evil is a misunderstood hokes pokes notion. An yes that is the movie's theme but it shows it in a truth to unveil the weakness of man, not to promote such behavior. People misunderstand "Dirty Harry" in the same way.

  • Well considering Fritz Lang was Jewish Catholic, I really REALLLLLLLY doubt he was in support of promoting propaganda for the third Reich...

However I do agree the film's logic is simple wrong. People aren't just "bad" without reason. That's a religious notion. In the logic of cinema this is a theme that has been visited many times over and merely exists as a cinematic stand point, not a political one.

  • what do you mean? of course pople is "bad" for some kind of social or psychological reason

  • They aren't bad. They're just conditioned to be destructive. It's never a choice. You never choose to be bad.

  • saw it today

    it was awsome

  • I didn't like this film

  • Why?

  • the music?

  • In the Hall of The Mountain King by Grieg, from his Peer Gynt Suite.

  • I want to see this movie!

  • I really thrilling and chilling movie.

  • I saw this movie in my film history class. It's an amazing movie. Well done with this trailer! I love how you tied in the music and the murderers whistling. It was really bone chilling! Excellent job.

  • Are the Ms an analogy for the jews or something?

  • M- murder

  • Movie trailers sure have changed...

  • the background music sounds like the Inspector Gadget theme!

  • thats made by eduard grieg, sth about goblins. Its classic! But yeah sound similiar

  • Does anyone know the name of the background musical? Its sooo addicting

  • Peer-Gynt-Suite by Edvard Grieg; in the hall of the mountain king, suite no. 1; from 1888/1891

  • you should listen also to the other pieces of the suite, they are also addicting

  • If your premise is correct, then where did people get these ideas before movies were made?

    Get a clue!

  • From following an example!!! Exactly my point!! It's ok I still love ya.

  • So what movies did Hitler, Stalin and Saddam watch?

  • I did not know Hitler, Stalin and Saddam where child molesters.... off the topic though... Books can be portrayed as an act of a film even a play. A lot of evil comes from books, evil that can be portrayed and understood.

  • So you think only child molesters get ideas from movies like these? How many child molesters do you think ever even saw this movie? Although it is no excuse, a great many molesters were molested themselves. It is pretty-well documented that sexual predators are incurable. So, there is no cure for a sexual deviant of this sort. Therefore, it probably would not matter if they saw this or not. People are responsible for their owns acts.

Free will ...it is a bitch.

  • you remember "the Passion of the Christ?" you really think people watched that because they fuckin hated jesus? you're a fucking waste of egg sack. Watch the movie before you make a statement you douchecunt

  • Thanks so much for posting. First saw this movie in a film class during the 80s. Makes you think - maybe the bad guys should take care of the bad guys. Hard to believe this movie was made in 1931 making it 78 YEARS OLD!

  • you should see the original version of scarface that was made in 1932. "the world is yours". interesting to see where that came from and how they made the original before cocaine was around

  • XD Awesome trailer! A few spoilers, yes, but altogether an excellent video.

  • Oh, peter, your beady eyes. xD

  • @nayoungk What a tragic beauty of a face.

  • those balloons are terrifying

  • yes, but don't you think they resemble the ballons from the 3rd Man, where they are'nt terrifying at all

  • cenjorlisboa, Hello, Sorry to sound like a bit or a nerd. But you stated

    "Whistle by Peter Lorre"

Thats actually incorrect, the whistle was be the actual director Fritz Lang, Lorre couldnt whistle.

    I'll quote wikipedia.

Lorre's character whistles the tune "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1. However, Peter Lorre himself could not whistle it is actually Director Fritz Lang who is heard.

  • I think you'll find it was Peter and The Wolf that did this whistling.

  • @CeramicVideo actually, I believe it was his wife.

  • @CeramicVideo Hey, maby that is why he never whistles when on camera!

  • 2:40 poster from the movie "4 von der front" yay

  • Oh yes. This is good.

  • didnt Wumpscut sample that little girl singing

  • good music :-)

  • Does anyone else favor Lang's films over films by his contemporaries like Hitchcock and Murnau? I hate to say that, but M, Metropolis and Die Nibelungen have the most artistic images I have seen in the 30's...

  • Well it Lang vs Hitchcock is down to a matter of opinion but its a lot harder with Murnau passing away at such a young age, he din't reach his full potential ..

  • I rather like Lang.

  • Fragile0Still : I agree! I favour Fritz Lang's films to his contemporaries', although I do like Hitchcock's and Murnau's films as well. There's something about Lang's films that makes me think, "Wow! This is not just a film, it's art!" Mind you, I really do favour the German Expressionist film genre.

M is by far my favourite film, it contains everything I could ever want in a film.

Have you seen May's 'Asphalt'? The plot lets it down a bit but the imagery really did impress me.

  • AWESOME TRAILER! I haven't seen this movie, but I really really want to. Even more so now, after watching this! And I LOVE "In the Hall of the Mountain King" great song!

  • this was one of the most impressive, ingenuitive films I ever saw. It was the second time I had seen Peter Lorre (first time was the Maltese Falcon) and the performance was BRILLIANT!!! It was fun to watch as well, for I have been studying the German language since five years (7th grade-12th grade/present) and it is films like this that make me glad I did.

  • Immortal!!

  • Fabbo trailer for the best film of all time--immediate, chilling. Makes me wanna see M again!!

  • LOL @ 2:40, Posters for G. W. Pabst's Westfront 1918. :D

  • too many SPOILERS! but very nice!

  • One of the greatest movie's ever, Peter Lorre is awesome.

  • scientifically, this film is spectacularly ahead of its time.

  • very good haunting film!

  • I love the way the trailer is put together but I don;t like the version of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" you have. It is not as intense as a traditional recording, it is almost funny. Other than that great job on this trailer.
