I love the crazy looking 17th century explorer/merchant wearing a piped green and orange tunic. For some reason I imagine that as being the French idea of crazy dutch pioneers/explorers and it's awesome.
Opera isnt meant to be this much fun,is it?JUst love watching anything with Patricia Petibon in it, so quite biased yet this looked like a very spirited production.
ROLALA, j'aurais tellement souhaité y être, je ne me lasse pas de regarder ce spectacle!! ils ont vraiment l'air d'y prendre bcp de plaisir!!!! bravo!!!

If opera is expected to survive, the boundaries will have to be pushed a little.
Frankly, I'm pretty tired of those pseudo-intellectuals who think opera needs to be stuffed under a powdered wig to be considered "legitimate."
Opera has the opportunity to be living, breathing art form. It has to change with the times. Les Indes Galantes was intended to be light and enjoyable, and this is how it's presented here.
Buddy, it was a compliment! Europe is renowned for its productions that push the boundaries of our "normal" conception of how opera should be staged. Would you expect to see something like this at Covent Garden, the Met, or the Sydney Opera House? I'm a huge fan of pushing the bounds of opera and I think this production is wonderful, especially the fact that its at the major French opera theatre, Garnier.
As for insults on youtube, I think someone else now looks like a pretentious imbecile!
I have been hearing about the differences between American and European stagings on the great Opera podcast - OperaNow!. In Europe the boundaries are pushed a little.... in staging and the choice of repertoire.
I think that this would translate well to any opera house... I could definately see this production at Covent Garden and even the Met. It's pure entertainment after all.
This really is crazily funny!!! I love how Maestro Christie himself is up dancing and conducting at the same time!!! Where else, BUT on the continent, would you get such a production?!!! Love it :)
POPPYMODERN-- I keep returning to this scene, this performance exudes enjoyment of all performers and the audience -- this is what it is all about -lovely joyfull perfection -- thank you mr CHRISTIE - come to Prague to produce it here !!!!
Oohlala, Crackwhore69 - the dancing is so vulgar and moderne. Quelle horreur! And the performers and the audience seem to be enjoying themselves and having fun. Fun, as we know, has no place in The Opera. My goodness, people watching the opera might not be in proper evening dress, which as tout le monde knows is simply de rigeur.
I have the DVD of this production, it is on the Opus Arte label. It is a great production, clearly, it hasn't won over everyone on Youtube. As for Petibon, she can do no wrong in my eyes.
William Christie a Priest? I dont know whether he would take that as a compliment or insult. Haha. He is always the showman.
crackwhore69 is right. "Vulgar" is the word. This is one of the greatest and most original scenes in one of the greatest, and possibly the most original, opera of the high Baroque. Almost the worst and most shameful production I've ever seen.
Vulgar? I enjoy the choreography of the aria. At 1:00 we have an encore of the most famous piece of the opera (and of Rameau's writing at all perhaps) during the curtain calls. The dancing is impromptu and not part of the staging of the opera. Ofcourse the staging and choreography of the opera does have its wonderful moments of genius, but none, none of it is vulgar.
I love how Christie did the dance with everyone at the end. Patricia Petibon's SOOO cute and has such an awesome voice(that D's a little flat though). And Rameau's dance rhythms! Wow.

Christie, Petibon and the rest are all awesome. Productions like this, as innovative and daring as Rameau himself, are an inspiration.

I definitely agree with that, I think this does a good job of showing the fun of this Opera
Serious operas on the other hand should be treated seriously.
For example I don't think the Valkyries in Die Walkure should wield Lightsabers and act like Jedi Knights.
That's just stupid.
jfbecks17 2 years ago 6
@norcalrobbie2 Well said, I couldn't agree more - that is the meaning of 'galante' after all.

Fun has no place in the Opera ??
I prefer to think you're joking.
BTW, this is an "Encore", and they obviously enjoyed the evening as much as the audience !
