  • i can listen to this 1000 times and it still keeps my attention

  • Hard to hear. But just what needs to be heard.

  • Someone that knows real truth. We are on the path to ascension.

  • iNCREDIBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • Wow that was somethin'

  • @Existantia i took the double meaning as... today young people call their cars (whips) and their necklaces (chains) which today is used as a representation of their wealth and social status. Black people will go broke trying to look good or out do the next person, but in all actuality all it is doing is mentally enslaving them, because they become dependent on those things, which become the modern day weapons of mind control just like the whips and chains were back in the day to control slaves

  • @LDutch4 Well said

  • Real shit nothing less

  • i cant stomach being whipped or being stripped because of the color of my skin so every time i write a slave poem my paper bleeds -- best line I've ever heard.

  • Who could have possibly disliked this??!!

  • what does he mean when he says "im tired of seeing these rappers selling themselves short for a penny"

  • @goddamnshawtsnapin3 that they will sell their souls for anything as little as fame when they could do much more with something thats last

  • @MRLOMO18 kk

  • Chills, every time.

  • Whips and chains as in being enslaved to white man and now the prisons are full of these same minorities

  • i've never seen cooning disguised so well....thats so true. i love this poem

  • everytime i write a slave poem my ppl bleeds

  • blacc men like me wud neva picc cotton again even if its thru an asprin bottle

  • Watched this a million times, just a question maybe someone could answer. I get the whole "whips and chains" double meaning....but what does he mean when he says they ain't symmetrical? As in, there is always there is always someone controlling the whip sorta thing?? Anyways, lemme know. Thanks!!!

  • @Existantia When he says that the historical use of "whips and chains" and the contemporary slang use of "whips and chains" are symmetrical, he is suggesting that while African American youth (in some aspects youth in general) haven't physically become slaves, they have psychologically become slaves to an ideology of financial excesses rather than one that supports progressiveness towards sociological change.

  • @Existantia he saids they are symmetrical.....

  • @Existantia I think he means whips and chains( cars and diamond chains) are the same as whips and chains ( the ones slave masters beat slaves with & chains they used to chain slaves with) are the same because they are keeping African Americans enslaved because we are buying from them.

  • I love you Rahleek!

  • left me speechless :)

  • Wow amazing..."whips and chains" "whips and chains"......enuff said

  • Incredible piece young man....

  • You have to be black to know what its like to be us. It's hard to act like slavery never existed when your family tree is the one that was destroyed.... its hard not to be bitter when being "Black" is considered ugly and a disease. Its hard when your race is self destructing and hasn't learned how to pick up the pieces. Racism isn't over, only white people think so. So for those people who think that we should just "Let it go" tell me what its like to be black.

  • @Chynacavalli white people know that it aint over. they are the main ones tryin to keep it alive

  • I love the way, he says I AM TIRED...you feel it and i have felt that tired also on many occassion. Listening to him, its better than going to church! Amen brother, speak the truth, he has lent me a voice as sometimes words just fail me! x Thank you to him! "some mother fucker said a change is gonna come"

  • that was sooo beast

  • Wow...Even if means thow a fuckin' asprin bottle.

  • Just got my daily fix. I listen to this everyday.

  • @nuknodismann me too

  • What does he mean by the line "it's kinda hard teaching high school boys that whips and chains are symmetrical"?

  • @SvD3Y3z look at the way he uses that words in that sentence...

  • @SvD3Y3z whips (cars) = Slave whips Chains (necklaces) = lynches

  • @SvD3Y3z slave whips and chauns are similar to gangsta "whips" -cars and gold chains

  • @SvD3Y3z yes I would like someone to explain that to me also, if you get the explanation, pass it on please x Thank you.

  • @kokumusicismylove not sure if you found the explanation yet but he's saying that youth today look at whips=cars and chains=necklaces. but back in the day whips=actual lashings and chains= hanging or lynchings.

  • Can't stop listening to his voice....

  • dat Nas

  • I think he Is one of the hardest contest I have ever heard... n that just inspire mi to step mi presentation of poems up

  • ....WOW. This dude is too real. He makes me wanna burn my notebook.

  • @SayWhaaatt03 i agree. he's gifted like idek right now. lol. makes my poems look like kindergarten crap.

  • @thelivingpoet RIGHT?! Like, this made me question my own level of intelligence.

  • "everytime I write a slave poem, my paper bleeds." Wow..........

  • All thass real talk

  • the hat covers up his cuteness

  • what's the name of this poem?

  • @janepriere I'm pretty sure it's called Change.

  • I love all this " your kind , my kind " shit in the comments.

You're the poision that he's talking about in this poem.

  • wtf? is a poetry slam?

  • It's, more or less, competitive performance poetry. You usually have about three judges selected from the crowd to get them involved, or 'guest judges' if its more formal like this. The poet comes out, reads or performs their piece in the time given, then they're given a score. Highest score wins. Because its performance they can do it however they like so long as they don't use props.

  • This guy is insane. Love his voice, love his passion, love his words. Amazing stage presence.

  • he's by far the BEST poet i've ever heard.

  • B.YUNG IS SOOOO LYRICALLY TALENTED !

I LOVED HIM ON THE SHOW TOO ! (Just a Plus That He's Cute *wink* LOL)

But Will Someone PLEASE send me the words to this Poem ??

  • its easy to learn, jus listen harder

  • i love this poem.. n yung is cute

  • "every time I write a slave poem my paper bleeds" that line was hard

  • Comment removed

  • he meant that some people ignore the fact that black people are light skinned because our slave ancestors were raped by white slave owners

  • I like this, he's dope

  • it's coming, B, just keep doin'. We all will.....

  • 'o my god this is so good' i loved it!!!!!

  • damn chills ran down my back.... love it

  • YEs!!! I finally found a version that's not censored!

  • "Its kind of hard teaching high school boys that whips and chains, and whips, and chains, are symmetrical."

Best line I have ever heard.

  • My teacher showed us a vid of all the contestants in class today, now I'm a freshman in high school, in this advnaced creative writing class. Today I was introduced to 'slams' and i have to say... this one.. just got me the most. Now if I were actually black maybe I would feel extremely passionate because I think anyone from the black race would feel passion for this pice. But Im white and I think this is fantastic! The beginning made me almost cry, it was... touching, thats all I have to say.

  • This man rite here. He speak tha truth tha shit people b scared to say! ! !

  • This is fucking amazing my english teacher showed us a snip of his talent and I had to see more

  • "anyting to make a dolla jump stupid nigga holla" dat line is da truth

  • trth

  • this is my favorite poem from this show. i live in the south.. Louisiana.. and all the kucking rednecks down here are racists and its fuckin irritating. i'm white and i love black people. i like hangin wit them more than the bitch ass people down here.i have no problem with any race and i hate people who do.

  • @coreskater94 true. im from south louisiana as well and even in my small town im from its very obvious that most people there are racist. its sad. bc a lot of those racist people have kids that im friends with.

  • "My blood burns, My eyes run, Everytime i even look at a tree that resembles one, a nigga was hanging from, I can't stomach being, whipped up being, Stripped because the color of my skin, So everytime i write a slave poem, My paper bleeds."

  • I was thinking the same thing, all he need is the mole...

  • i feel so bad, i gave it a one star on accident. I SWEAR. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!

  • LOL, it's okay.

  • he was so good

  • racism is a disease. Both white and blacks are affected...it may even be a mental illnes but its effect is greater on black people bcuz we are the victims of it also the whites effect is severe bcuz it gives them a distorted picture of the world ....and im only 13 but understading has to take place from adolescence because this world can be a cold place.wehave to be strong remember life has its ups and downs...but thats life..it wont be an easy venture..it never has been B.Y truly infects truth

  • chek out "bnv western regionals"

  • How do we give knowledge this deep a 4 and a half star ratin? B. Yung was spittin some of the illest poetry... we need to open our ears and eyes and make Sam Cooke's dream come true.

  • this is beautiful- and I am also TIRED

  • This is the sexiest thing I have ever in my life...I think I'm in love with this dude's intellect.

  • tupac got a record deal and he spoke truth like this too

  • tupac wrote poetry first way b4 he started music. In fact most of his songs are derived directly from his poems. The same with Ashanti except her music isnt that great. You probably knew that already though.

  • this is beautiful

    it is the truth

    and it is tragic

but i fear i can't fully appreciate it.

I wish I had the lyrics to this poem.

  • Wow I watched this with a tear in my eye. B.Yung is such a powerful spoken word artist. I could feel his intensity though this video, imagine being in the room. I wish him much continued success.

  • like for real he just the shit what more is there to be said boy got it

  • wow B. Yung you inspire me!

  • 1:55 absolutely killing it with truth.

  • Yo I love this kid! I've been meaning to find this for a while now

  • Wow B-yung amazing. I find it foolish that in this day in age people can't listen to a whole piece before prejudging. He said he was sorry for blaming whites for what there ancestors put them through. Listen! Also any ism is unacceptable no one is trying to argue who had it worst. Another thing is racism is not a card black people play it was dealt. Much love!

  • all i'm saying is that he has a right to say what he wants. and yes he does have a right to write a poem about slavery. but when it gets to the point of the Caucasian kids of the future STILL getting blamed for slavery, i think that's taking it too far. but i don't mind this at all. i was just trying to get my message out also. i have that right too. i didnt mean to offend anyone and sorry if i did

  • i think if you are fighting about what color or race this man is trying to speak about you are not listening to it......... he is FUCKING amazing

and i dont care what anyone has to say about it.

  • so if it happened to your ancestor it happened to you......and if you dont like it

    DON'T FUKING WATCH IT!!!!

  • spoken word/poetry lets you write what u feel and speak your mind so others can hear your thoughts....he has every right to say what he wants to say and how ever he wants to say it...allot of ya'll saying "slavery was only such and such years ago" and "my people were enslaved to" and if you want to think like that fine but dont get mad at him because he is speaking on what he went threw even if it wasn't him directly his people and we are people are a whole

  • i've sat down and watched this poem over and over....and read theese comments over and over...about enslaved african americans, hispanics, europeans ,about serfdom, the holocaust, and racism....alot of you aren't even listening to what he is saying....

  • everyone in urban word sounds the fucking same omg, i would never join them, though i gotta say they're workshops are amazing, lol

  • That poem was nice. B yung actually came to my school with Urban Word and it really inspired us.

  • This poet wrote a beautiful poem, and conveyed a beautiful message. Isnt that why we watched it. Not to argue about whose ancestors did what to what race. Im not black and I felt the emotion and strength in his message...and agree with it to the T. To this poet, I want to say thank you for writing this. Maybe ignorant people will hear it and maybe get something from it...however chances are they will still be ignorant, as we have seen from some of the comments below.

  • i just like the poem.

  • i agree w u colpluto about the whole thing that every1 in one time or another was enslaved i think the reason they (i dnt say they as an ignorant white person bc im actually spanish nd im guessin that colpluto is white) make so much huss about it is mainly becuase it happened in the land of the free. every man was supposed to be treated equally in america thats y ppl came here in the first place. id thats just my input i think its mainly bc it was in america

  • Comment removed

  • And another thing. if you listen to this poem with an open mind you will hear him apologize for the ignorance of the average black american. He mentions the inconsistencies of black culture and concedes that white people today are not to blame, and FOR THE MOST PART (not all) it is only us screwing ourselves over. and the reason they dont put african wars genocide on the news is because nobody gives a fuck when a nigga dies. Hence, Sean Bell

  • you don't give a shit when your own kind dies. in africa is happens every second. i don't see you jumping to the cause or sending your aid to them. so who's to say that you care? there's more of your kind then what's in your city or who's related to you.

  • Attention all ignorant white people:

Organizations like BET and UNCF were only created because of discrimination! Black people never got 2 b on tv or get hired for shows so we made our own channel. Same with black colleges. White colleges didnt let us in so we made our own colleges. What should we do now shut them down? Besides i see white folks on BET every day, and i see white ppl at black colleges. You can go if u want to. So on behalf of the entire black race, SHUT THE FUCK UP!

  • wow. im speechless

  • Okay our ancestors went through slavery for 21 generations

Then we just got a semblance of equality about 30 years ago[meaning one generation]

so excuse us if we feel we still have the right to use the so-called "race card"

  • Beautiful portrays a message. To all you ignorant people talkin bout the race card dont say we cant use it we can i was in a book store and im reading and they wud watch me instead of the white guy next to me STFU

  • OMG!! itsz a sicc ass po3m

y yall like leavin fr3akin paragraph responseszz?? itsz a po3m!! enjoy itt 4 watt itt isz

&& if yu dnt like itt..dasz gr3at 4 yu..da world does NOTT care wat yu think so dnt feel da need 2 turn disz into a seminar..opinionsz r like assholes..everybody has one..smH

  • i cant understand half of what he says cuz hes talkin so fast and passionately. His delivery is sick! but i agree that it seems like every poet that isnt white pulls out the race card just cuz they can. I liked his ending the way hes like you cant blame my ignorant brothers for being so cuz they are a product of what society created

  • whips and chains... symmetrical... soo sick//

  • and the haters commenting on this

    stop and educate urself

  • that's my boy

yung: i will never pick cotton again even if it means from an aspirin bottle

    damn i love u

  • REAL TALK!!!

  • oh my gawd..he's a gr8 poet

i swear he is.spoken so strongly

  • no leas este mensaje.el proximo viernes sera el dia que te beses con tu pareja,mañana sera el mejor dia de tu vida, pero si no envias este mensaje a 3videos mas moriras en 2dias

  • now thats powerfull

  • tupac could do this yo,

  • we aren't hanging them from trees anymore.

    I'd say that's a change.

  • Beautifully said

  • i accept your apology for making todays white people responsible for what our ancestors did,,,

  • that was just beautiful...and very powerful...

  • how long are we going to listen to the whole racial thing about haning blacks ,beating them, making them slaves,it's over drop it already,we have a black prez now,let it fucking go

  • Were you listening to the poem? because most of it talked about moving on...learn to listen carefully rather than judgmentally. And if necessary, we should continue to talk about it for as long as it's felt and for as long as it continues to shape the fabric of our society.

  • Very valid point, and well said.

    Thank You

  • as a slam poet teen myself (who happens to be white), i think that was one of the most incredible poems i've seen in a long while. the way he turns it 2/3 of the way through from hatred to love is just incredible. great cadence, just overall incredible. you may not agree with his message (which i think is beautiful), but at least recognize the talent this kid has. that was just a mind-blowing performance

  • he is speaking his mind.. thats the the beauty of poetry..

  • Starting at 2:57, he says "I'm tired of blaming you (meaning white people), I'm tired of hating you, but most of all I'm tired of us (meaning black people) making you responsible for everything your ancestors are putting us through." Then he says "I don't hate you. In fact I don't even despise you. I think I love you. More than I can love half of my ignorant brothers." Then he apologizes for the entire black race, which people like me totally agree with! How the fuck is that racist?

  • @Hrd2FndaNme exaaaactly. thank you!

  • I wish y'all would watch the entire video. All you see is a young black male with a fitted cap on starting off depicting what he heard it was like in the slave days, and you assume he's racist. Listen to the poem.

  • Why is he acting like he lived through slavery. Also, his ancestors could have been some of the few slaves that were treated well, maybe not even slaves at all. White people were slaves too. Ever heard of indentured servants. They work to pay of their ship ride to America. Oh, and America was not the first civilization to make slaves. All of our ancestors could have been slaves, unless you are on heir to a thrown or something.

  • True there were white slaves, but they weren't involved in the brutal TransAtlantic slave trade...it cost an unestimable number of African lives due to malnutrition and/or mutilation and became an enterprise of breeding human beings for forced work. Indentured servants are not slaves, they're people who work for someone they're in debt to. From what i read they had rights and weren't beaten. AND NO SLAVE IN AMERICA WAS TREATED WELL...HOUSE SLAVE OR NOT THEY WERE STILL CONSIDERED SUBHUMAN.

  • SMOHS. you are ignorant and uneducated, if you knew anything you would know NOT everyone has exact opportunities. If fact opportunity is limited to only certain types of people. WHITE people are the true reason for poverty, racisms and hatred in this country and before you post regarding what I'm saying...do some reading first and get some education.

Yes white people are effected and so are latinos, asians ect... but the stem of racism began in when Europeans took over this country.

  • Racist shitty video. this should be banned from youtube.

  • and finally obama yes is black but everyone acts like all the black people are going to be moving into all the uppity neighborhoods and their shit will no longer stink... give me a fucking break. it takes a lot of work for anyone to get ahead hes not gonna just hand out jag keys down at your local news stand. IRS is not prejudice it takes anybodys money blite/whack purple/ red no one cares. freedom is already here your struggles are your own. remember opinions are like assholes everybody has one

  • who gives a fuck you don't like living in the ghetto.. then move. poverty is not black or white so the neighborhood you live in is because your to lazy to pick up your box and go else where. change your life don't live in the past unless it was you gettin whipped your not fighting for that struggle and for the idiot who wrote about where are all the white people on the streets theyre there i give them a dollar every time i see them with their signs... we know theyre there...but why.

  • this is why racism is very alive today because when someone says something regardless of your skin color everybody has a fucking opinion... you feel this he feels that how the fuck you gonna tell someone that they don't experience something in their life like that. if it were a white guy up there sayin this would it matter or if his peom were about the struggles of white people it would be better this is why racism is still strong beacause if ignorant people who sit and point fingers

  • Very deep... loved the punchlines... great performance

  • and where are all the white kids growing up on the streets? is slam poetry only limited to blacks now? and why is everyone speaking about the same thing. slavery? all you people just need an excuse to why your lives arent so great and need someone and something to blame it on so you pick the white man and slavery and say that society wont give you the same chance to be successful

B, stick with this and you could be successful as for the rest of you. go to school, avoid gangs and drugs, the end

  • your dumb, everyones got the exact same opportunities to make it in life so what are you talking about still waiting for change?? hold your breath cause the damn president elect will soon put a silver spoon in all of your damn mouths. i do like how he apologizes for the ignorant people out there tho black and white its all over no slavery everyone has the exact same rights and opportunities as for discriminating its an image not skin color baggy clothes and XXXL shirts makes people not like you

  • im not black but what your sayin is basically "hey its been 50 years since we used you, get over it". Lower SES (socioeconomic status) is correlated to many problems in a child's life, an it happens to white ppl the same as black, but there is a higher number of black an latino ppl in the lower SES, and the highest SES is dominated by white ppl. There are so many reasons why white ppl have it better than other races, but white ppl will never admit to anything, they deny they have privileges.
