Haven't played since early 2008. Had just reached about 1800 total before I quit if I remember right. Man that game was so good back in the day. I remember they removed the wildy as part of their efforts to stop botting and gold farming etc.

From what I here now, the game is overrun by people using an easy to obtain bot that can't be detected. Is this correct?

This is the what runescape is suppose to be about. Like some of the comments said, it's not about new updates or new graphics. It's about having a good time training skills and Combat. When they had these old graphics, no one complained, then when Jagex uodated the graphics to 3D, all the complains came out of no where so in my opinion they should change it back to the old fun runescape.
