how do you wire it without a shield?

No I used the radios as is, the way they ship they will "talk" to each other, however to program the radios I use a serial to USB board and wire that to an XBee radio on an adaptor board. Here are the part numbers from the fine folks at SparkFun.

Did you take out the arduino chip on the board connected to your pc?
