McChrystal was wrong to say what he said but he was only given a fraction of the troops he asked for and Obama put a time line on the end of operations against the General's best advice. Al Sadr's truce coupled with paying of iraqis to maintain the peace had a more lasting effect than the surge alone. The surge is hyped as THE solution when in fact it was only part of a 3 pronged solution.

The Bush admin broke with past precedent. They didn't replace a dictator with another dictator. They chose the tougher course of creating a CHANCE for these people to democratically choose their own destiny. Under Saddam the people were unexposed to a political culture that embraces the basic rights and freedoms of democracy. That has changed greatly as people return to their terrorist-free homes, the infrastructure is rebuilt and the Iraqis learn to create a culturally relavent democracy.

once the US dollar tanks and thy cant afford to pay those Iraqis in a meaningful currency they'll simply pick up arms again especially since they'll have to switch focus to Afghanistan.
