@nwollard Even without the Civil War, slaves were maybe a decade or 2 from becoming basically obsolete farm equipment with the mechanization of agriculture. Not only would farm machines have eliminated much of the work done by the slaves thus idling them, the masters would've been faced with the cost of feeding and housing slaves they had no work for.
