Wow. What a great player and a nice human being. We're gonna miss you a lot, Mr. Murphy. Thank you for all of your hard work, your passion, your music, and your ability to inspire trumpet players everywhere.
How modest, ha, they are good, but thats all I got from this video, I didn't learn anything except how good you have to be to be like these guys, I have noticed that jazz trumpet players like Roger Ingram and Wayne Bergeron and guys like them will tell you more of how to play better and their mistakes, NOT how good they are.
wow, these guys know what they're talking. really nice hints in this vid. if you guys wanna learn trumpet, look at my website allabouttrumpet [ . ] yolasite [ . ] com
i think its a later generation, because the older strads have one of the triggers for the left thumb tuning slide and his is more like mine where its the traditonal slide and no trigger
Finally we get to see Maurice on youtube! What a player. I'd really like to know what trumpet he uses, one search came up with a severinsen, and plenty of info about the wick mouthpiece. Mind you, he could make a tin can sound good!
That's the most beautiful sound I've ever heard in my life... Maurice Murphy have the most amazing trumpet sound of the world! Thanks for sharing it with us!
That efficiency issue is key. I stopped playing for six months in order to reset my embouchre and get the efficiency sorted out - with the help of a good teacher. It totally transformed my playing and gave it a new lease of life.
It takes a lot of time to develop your lips to be able to play the really high notes, so its always near impossible for a beginer at the trumpet unless youve somehow strengthened your lips before hand
you don't develop you "lips" or strengthen your "lips"
you move faster and slower air, having strong facial muscles, i.e. "embouchure"
the only two things that need to be stronger or more developed is the embouchure and the diaphragm. that's it. simple as that. as long as both are being used in the proper way you can play anything.
Oh and, those of you who also play the trumpet. The mouce piece thing said was dead on. I for example practice with the mouth piece before playing the trumpet. I practice the accuracy, I try hitting certain heights etc and it really helps alot when you start playing.
Another thing, very widespread mistake is, as Maurice said, people don't breathe correctly. This will result in a lack of air and a mediocre sound. Playing long notes . Just one note with your entire air capacity, makes you endure.
I played trmupet for 7 years then gave up because I couldn't be bothered carrying it to school for lessons. I regret that now two years on and I'm starting again.
Maurice is the daddy of trumpet playing, end of story folks.....72 and still a legend.
No doubt there are great sections out there, but who were they listening to in the 70's play star wars? Maurice and the LSO. He played on every star wars soundtrack(both trilogys-requested by J.Williams himself!) and in fact probably every lso soundtrack for the last 30 years! Trumpet players, take your hats off to this man.
Now in terms of trumpet sections it's either New York Phil, with Phil Smith, or Royal Concertgebouw in the Netherlands with Frits Damrow, CSO is still really good with Chris Martin.
Why'd you switch? Nobody can hit high notes as a beginner. I suck at the trumpet, and I couldn't hit above middle c for 2 years. Trumpet> Euphonium any day (though your band leader probably disagrees). Stick with whichever one you like more, not because you can't hit high notes on trumpet.
Nah, you're really not supposed to, as it tends to develop bad habits. Will it make you unable to play the trumpet? Of course not. Plenty of the best trumpet players in the world (i.e this guy, Hakan Hardenberger, Wynton Marsalis) all put their fingers in the ring. But to put the finger in the ring for the sake of doing it rather than keeping it on top is rather negatively-reacting.
My teacher at the Royal Military School of Music was Jack Mcintosh and his son who both played with the LSO I believe. Jack had a finger missing but I cant remember which one but it didn,t affect his playing.
LSO were probably one of the top 2 or 3 in the world when Maurice was on top form. CSO great with Adolf Heseth but I don';t know so much about them now
A good Trumpet player plays the notes, and sounds good, but an Excellent Trumpet player plays the notes, provides plenty of support making the notes slightly sharp and counteracting this with the slides.
Take Star Wars Theme, the triplet D's sound terrible if you don't use the slide(s), but provide more support, and tuneful use of slides, and you sound so much better

(alos try listening to Star Wars or any thing he's done with the LSO etc) Using the slides to tune low C sharp and D is common pracice amonst cultured Trumpet players. This is what I was taught at the Royal College of Music.
It don't come easy, my friend. You know it don't come easy.
Good things in Life rarely come easily.
You know I'm only kidding on the various items I've posted.
But I do tongue down the low D and C# most of the time, rather than slide out. I only slide out when the D and/or C# are long notes. For the short duration notes, I tongue down.
Ah, interesting - when playing quickly that makes sense. On trombone though, the opposite is true, cos you're moving the slide anyway, you end up learning the exact position for every note. As you say, not easy, but worth it in the long run!
No WAIT -- but that's NORMAL behavior for YOU "guys". My badd.
I compensate for D and C# not with the slides, but I merely tongue it down; works for me. The middle of my tongue, create a hollow pit and push downward. Corrects just fine with practice.
much easier to change sound quality, and manipulate the shape of your mouth to correct intonation than to use a slide, and play in the centre of your instrument.
I could use a couple hundred lessons by someone of Mr. Murphy's calibre. I have a feeling that he doesn't make such a good private teacher; his personaliy is much better suited to "doing" rather than teaching.
I bet his buddy Ian Gomm, there his little buddy sitting to the right of Murphy is prolly a better teacher.
keeps the D in key. it's been a while since i've played but when you play a D, it tends to sharp. so you bring the pitch down by sliding the slide out.
In the rules it says that you must use the same musical instrument for video 1 and 2. Does that mean I have to use my Bb for both 1 and 2, or is what this Nigel Gomm says right (ie. I could use my Eb on the Haydn if I wanted to?)? I'm confused!
Bracing, finger buttons, third valve slide, pinky hook, and first valve slide saddle are dead ringers for a Bach Stradivarius. My best guesses as to the exact make and model are ML bore and 37 or 43 bell--the flare looks too tight for a 72, but I could be wrong. Pretty conventional setup, though, which just proves that it's the player, not the horn, making the music.

what's wrong whit you?? ah..probabilly he is your daddy... fuck you bitch and continue to play guitar hero.... you fucking loser! learn to play a real instrument! Fucking pussy!
i too get red when i play. it really isn't the heart that plays the key factor in the air amounts required(not saying its irrelevant). it takes a lot of air to play the trumpet(even though it doesn't seem so). and he played that solo beautifully and very very clean. some people just turn red when they play. this is in no way offense to you mikeliba1982. just to clear things up to people reading this. i had to reply because i hate when people point it out to me that i turn really red(asthmatic).
The Hook was put on the Trumpet by the German. Which they think is a good idea to use it to turn pages when playing. So, it doesn't matter if you put your finger in it or not.
Wow. What a great player and a nice human being. We're gonna miss you a lot, Mr. Murphy. Thank you for all of your hard work, your passion, your music, and your ability to inspire trumpet players everywhere.

Bracing, finger buttons, third valve slide, pinky hook, and first valve slide saddle are dead ringers for a Bach Stradivarius. take care of your heart..you are so red when you play the trumpet.... by the way my compliment..

It takes a lot from your body to play like he does. Leave him alone, he's a pasty white Englishman.

I can play plenty of real instruments. I'm pretty good, too. Not masterclass, but pretty good nonetheless.
I'm sorry for trying to stand up for the guy. God.
Get off youtube, please. Nobody wants you here.

i too get red when i play. it really isn't the heart that plays the key factor in the air amounts required(not saying its irrelevant). it takes a lot of air to play the trumpet(even though it doesn't seem so). and he played that solo beautifully and very very clean. some people just turn red when they play. this is in no way offense to you mikeliba1982. just to clear things up to people reading this. i had to reply because i hate when people point it out to me that i turn really red(asthmatic).

hadley12656 3 years ago

drumstyx6464 3 years ago
Yeah, I lament that the underrated Kazoo is not in the orchestra...

It NEVER gets any better than Maurice Murphy. The most versatile player of our time!

Check Doc Sevrenson. He would be right up there with Murphy.

"You can play the fastest, flashiest piece and that won't get you the job. Good sound will you get you the job"
Great advice! Don't just play the music, but be musical.

that is "top of the props" sound, i'll try at the piece "eroica" which is definetely beautiful, especially when maurice is playing it.

The Hook was put on the Trumpet by the German. Which they think is a good idea to use it to turn pages when playing. So, it doesn't matter if you put your finger in it or not.
