Gilbert Price was an incredible vocal and acting, talent. I saw him in Timbuktu and will never forget his soaring love songs and strong stage presence. He was partnered with Melba Moore and I was amazed at how she actually sang sweetly and legitimately and did not go wailing away as usual. He had a wonderful restraining influence that made her sing lyrically, not loudly.A big powerful voice but used with restraint and refinement A great artist and what a loss of great talent.
@intelegentable I wish they'd had the sense to produce a cast album of this show. I saw it twice, and was enthralled by Gilbert's voice. You made me laugh when you mentioned how he rather tamed Melba! I saw her in "Purlie," and though she was superb, her vocal gymnastics would have been out of place in "Timbuktu!" She did a beautiful job! I'm very grateful to hear from you, and have several other "GP" bits on YT. Some have been challenged as not quite authentic. Maybe Si, maybe No! Best wishes!
Amazing voice, amazing performer. I had the pleasure to see Gilbert Price on stage in Toronto. Roar of the greasepaint, smell of the crowd. At that time I was 19 yrs. old and had never seen such a good singer, and of course Anthonly Newly can't be forgotten.
By God, absolute great this performense! Better, better very better as Franky Boy! I I thought, that is the best Interpret of thease Song, but it's better, better, better.
@catweazle04 Thank you so much for commenting on the amazing Mr. Price! I agree with you that his voice is amazing, and I only wish I could provide a filmed version of him performing. You're a very kind!
As his companion from 1961 until his death from a faulty propane heater while he was sleeping in Vienna, Austria, 2 January 1991, I am amazed that some kind soul found this clip and posted it. His grandmother from the island of St. Kitts was my friend, I arranged his memorial, and his siblings' grandchildren keep in touch with me. Thanks to whoever was able to find this clip and post it. @revdoodoo Hello Mr. Smith! I've been trying to send you a message via your channel, but there's something preventing me from doing so. Delighted to hear from you! You must be very proud indeed of your friend, Mr. Price. I was fortunate to have seen him only 3 times, once in "Roar," and twice in "Timbuktu!" I'll never forget any of the experiences. Just to let you know that I've been in touch several times with Kim P and other family members. As YT fixes the contact issue, I'll be back!
@revdoodoo With YT "Send Message" still not functional on my MAC, I'll send another brief message. I know you've seen 3 of the 5 I've uploaded, but please try and view "Timbuktu!" There are 2 songs: "Stranger in Paradise," and "Night of My Nights." They are barely viewable, but Gilbert's superb voice still is so beautiful!
@revdoodoo Hi my name is Marvin Felix Camillo Jr. aka Panchito and I am Gilbert's Godson. It would be nice to connect with you as I have news to share with his family & you. I hope to hear from you..........
I have heard so many renditions of this song and frank sinatra's used to be my favorite until I herard this!! He sings this song with more emotion and feeling than anyone I have ever heard. It really gave me chills!! Thanks for posting.
@stablerrules Hopefully, a member of Gilbert's family will reply to your comment! Though we're not related, I feel confident in saying I'm his "Champion!" Mr. Price was a genius as evidenced here with "Old Man River." Think I've 4-5 more with "himself," and hope you'll view them. I'm in touch with his heirs and they've sanctioned what little I could find. This particular clip was based on a contribution by my friend Jerry. I'm very grateful to him, and for you comments! He still gives me chills!
@stablerrules My thanks to you for having made such a beautiful statement on Mr. Price and that incomparable voice! Hopefully, through you and some other new admirerers and old friends, more people will discover Gilbert and know of his incredible abilities. I think every comment will make his remaining family very happy!

hello i thank you so much for all the good comments about my brother gil it makes me feel so good that so many people loved his voice from the price family thank you. mark price
After hearing someone sing this on America's Got Talent I just had to go and find Gilbert Price. First heard his version on an Ed Sullivan Show Collection a few years ago. Simply put I don't think anyone on EARTH could sing it better than what I saw on Ed Sullivan. Think this is it, but without watching his actual performance.
I thought I was the only person that remembered how brilliant Gilbert was on the Ed Sullivan show - such an impact. I was so glad to get to hear him again - what a talent!
Simply the most wonderful combination od passion and a killer set of pipes. An amazing performanance. I think I hear Merv Griffin at the very end shouting,. Gilbert Price frequently appeard there.
After reading your reply I recalled that Ed Sullivan was totally blown away by that performance and I'm almost positive that remark was his -- he had to say something and he was clapping his hands while he did. Was reading a review on Price and the reviewer used the word frisson. I hadn't seen it in so long I had to look it up but it surely applies to this performance if not all of his! And I don't care whether it was writen for Warfield for Robeson no one sings it better than this!
