I'm a beginner, but I understood pretty early on that I didn't have a need to tune in standard. I usually play through distortion, and dyads and simple triads sound best througn distortion. I have no use for chords bigger than that. LOL. I've tuned my guitar to perfect 4ths (DGCFA#D#, which I call Owsla), to make chords and scales completely consistent.
Anyway, for all my experimenting, I hadn't considered how easy it is to play entire progressions ACROSS the strings. Thanks. :D
thanks mate, i should have watched this vid before asking about minor, sus etc (asked when watching no. 2). thanks again. heard a story on the ABC the other day about a cure for the Tassie Devil fascial tumor maybe 2 years away...cheers mate
Thanks for the video, i'm kind of understanding it, just a little bit confused but i'll understand it abit better in a few days.
Anyway, does this help for soloing ?
and when you're making a solo up, are you only supposed to use the notes that are in the chord thats being played ? like if a G chord was getting played then should it only be G B and D notes that the lead guitar plays until it changes chord, then the notes changes to whatever notes are in the next chord ?
would it be safe to say im rushing if im not only trying to understand what your saying, but also trying to get to grips with what a 3rd and 5th is at the same time?
Thanks for the lessons, got me inspired again, I've got the attention span of a Cocker spaniel so the short visual theory lessons really help! ....now, where am I?

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Very nicely dohe Justin. Great teacher. I really appreciate what you did. I am going to your website right now. Be blessed
Justin, great job & a wealth of information. I've been playing for over 20 years & never bothered to learn this, I basically picked it all up in the time that your 3 part series was finished, I play with a lot of folks who use this method but I always thought it would be too hard to learn, you made it easy & you made my day, month & years to come!!! Keep doin what you do, I can't wait to see more!!
i love how the lesson is organized! genius! the first two are nicely paced and step by step and then the last one not only reviews everything but contextualizes it and makes it easy to remember.
the last video is perfect to review the lesson as a whole and is also a great shortcut for slightly more advanced players to kind of speed through a lesson without missing anything.
this is really a great service to all of us who are trying to cultivate our understanding of music. thank you, justin!!
Hi Justin I am new to the guitar and love your videos your great at explaining how things work, I perticularly like this video as I am finding it hard to shape a normal open C chord can I substitute the C with one of these C's you showed on here to make it easier to play or at least until my left hand gets stronger thanks mate
Keep working on the regular C, you will get it and there are times you will need it. If you can make an Am, practice shifting from the Am to the C by just moving the one finger.
This 'triad' of lessons on the triad were inspiring. The minor chords are actually even easier than the major. I found myself doing some instant reggae mixing the majors nd minors. THANKS!!
One note: sometimes those of us who play an accoustic skip over lessons when the lesson shows an electric. This triad use is great for accoustic...but more down the neck from the tenth fret or so to the first fret. Playing anything on the 13th of my accoustic has all the musical sound of a dead stick..
as a guitar player we must play rhythm most of the time to know how different chord voicings are used in recorded music. he calls them shapes, they are voicings or really they are inversions, 1st inversion might be "C" shape, 2nd inversion might be "D" shape. note that each inversion/shape has its own sound
very important, when trying to learn songs, ever wonder why the chord you are playing sounds ok but not quite right?
different inversions../positions/voicings/shapes all the same
the minor ones are really easy...most of the shapes come from the barre chords but except of strumming the whole chord you just strum the thinnest three strings...
I think I managed to turn the major triads to minor.
The first shape goes a full barre on the root note, meaning the middle finger goes one fret back. (B goes back to a B flat in the case of a G chord)
The 2nd shape, which looks like the D shape, goes exactly like a D minor chord, meaning the B goes to a B flat again (in case of a G chord, of course)
3rd shape, goes like a "stair" kind of thing, meaning, again, the B goes to a B flat in case of a G chord.
I was playing Weezer's Island in the sun, and I couldn't explain the chords that I'm using to my friends, but now I can, thank you Justin, great lesson as always!
This is the first time I have watched a "how to" video on YouTube and actually understood and will be using the information taught! Justin, thanks heaps mate... keep 'em coming!
Its not about the soloing - its just about getting a different "flavour" of the same chord - lighter feel as it doesnt use the base strings. (Try that reggae thing he did with full chords to hear the difference.)
Greetings from the Netherlands. Some great lessons. I subscribed inmediatelly. And also forwarded a link to my guitarteacher.. he could copy some of your approaches because they are more clear to me ;-)
Of Course you know everything already though. Triads part 2. Thanks again for all the videos. When you hit the brick wall its great when new stuff comes out
Thanks a lot for this Justin! I just discoverd that a great piece to play along with to get the feel of the triads from this lesson is: "Get Together" by The Youngbloods.
Not really a 'spoiler' per se but I've done part of the homework Justin gives at the end of the lesson and here's what I think are the minor triad shapes and what chords you can make with them in the 1st area.
222 gives Gm; 543 gives Cm and 231 gives Dm which most of us will know already.
I found these lessons quite easy 'cos I'm doing the first part of Justin's theory course which is really good. Anyone else found the minor triads? Do you concur?
Justin, I was at the bookstore today, found this magazine, I think it was called "Music Maker" or something like that, and the cover mentioned something about "music lessons online," so I checked out the article, and you're totally featured on it!
