  • best versionnnnn

  • this song is so fuckinggg goooooood he looks like he is tripping everytime i see them preform live

  • who is on lead vocals?

  • I miss the old lyrics... :-\

  • Unbelievably moving. Best track from "Merriweather....."

  • where's the epic drum break?????

  • needs more cowbell.

  • One of the best performances of one of my favorite Animal Collective songs.

  • this song could be one sung by the greek god Dioniso

  • Am I the only one that when he sings (I may get it wrong) "We'll be dancing and you'll look at me and say 'I like this song''" I get all happy inside. It's such a great intimate moment.

  • @briedank

nope, youre not the only one. haha. there are many AC moments which melt my heart and make me feel overcome with joy

  • @briedank Don´t know why exactly, but that moment makes me cry in some kind of joy :)

  • Still can't find a band similar to Animal Collective, and I'm dying to find something that sounded a bit like them...

  • @herbleus March 12th a bit.

  • Actually I like it like this. You're right about that epic bit on the album, but having it subtle like this is nice and calming.

  • panda where are you at 1:52? you need to be banging those drums!!

  • Why does everyone fucking talk about drugs on these vids man. Yh its psychedelic. but if you actually listen to the lyrics you can see its about being on tour, and leaving your girlfriend behind all the time.

  • they arent the best live, not that ive seen them.

  • @nilpointdotcom That's the thing. And I'm not just aiming this at you, but people always comment on youtube videos saying "AC is good, but they're terrible live." The majority of those people have probably never seen them live as you said. There is an enormous difference between seeing a band live and listening to a youtube video. A lot of times it can do with how the sound was mixed for the video as well as a bunch of other factors. And keep in mind that this performance was before MPP came out.

  • drugs please.

  • the thoughts you get when you give in to taking drugs for the first time

  • amazing

  • jessi is an animal collective groupie

  • Although i love this performance, can anyone recommend a live version with the explosion @ 1:51 a lil more epic?

  • @smurfsrasexual If you were there, you would feel it. no needs for explosions.

  • This is so intense actually

  • This is rad

  • That explosion of sound at 1:51 takes me to a new level!!!

  • i intentionally clicked on this live version so i could hear the explosion of sound at 1:51. Still seemed like a cool performance.

  • isn't the audience clapping to the 2/4 beat instead of the 3/4? interesting

  • i really like this version more than the album version actually. instead of exploding it just kind of floats along beautifully.

  • holy fuck this is cool! I want drugs

  • Guys. Everyone. This was nearly a year before Merriweather was released. This is the song in a different form than you're used to. It's not like they forgot or aren't capable of making that part as explosive on the album. Animal Collective always begins performing songs in nascent forms and develops them as they tour. If you want an example of how drastically a song can change before it's recorded, go listen to Taste live.

  • that part might not seem as big on this video as it was live.. think music fans.. think..options...

  • i thought at 1:51 everything will explode into oblivion just like the song. oh well.

  • 7 people don't get wild to the beats of record rhytms

  • ti amo avey

  • They're a lot better live than i thought!

  • I don't think I like them live.

  • Anyone who thinks they don't do this well live (the explosion into the chorus), watch this /watch?v=YqXrC3N_fbk I like both.

  • IF I COULD JUST LEAVE MY BODY FOR THE NIGHT!

  • this must have been mindblowing to a crowd that hasn't heard this song before

  • Dude what the fuck why dint they use any percussion in there live sets!!

  • 1:51 is fine, stop complaining.

you could say the same about their performance of my girls at this concert. its a chill concert.

  • Damn at 1:51 it should have been more like an explosion'LOUD! its to calm ):

  • I love this version of In the Flowers. It doesn't pack the punch at 1:51 but I listen to this version more than MPP now. I just love the way the piano pushes through the organ(?) and then those two channels follow each other around melodically. If you want a completely different audio explosion in this song, google acollective2008-05-28.4061.flac16 and listen to track one.

Gah! Just listened to the MPP version again. Maybe it has the edge after all. Both epic IMO.

  • @DavidAUK its a harpsichord effect :P

  • ehhh i wish they really made the drums higher like the song..

when the drums start in the song i get chills. its awsome.

  • Man, where's the thumping bass drum driving through my soul here?

  • Avey sings this, not Panda.

  • if i could just leave my body for a night,

  • God Panda's voice is so primitively beautiful. It's like it could be one of the beautiful voices in history but's it is now, listening to this band is like looking at the most beautiful art, but better because you can hear it.

  • umm aveys the one singing the song

  • Comment removed

  • actualy that would prolly be nice... there good basic musicians aswell : D

  • @johnowensjr1234 lmao seriously, they made 2 soley acoustic albums, and one of them still uses an electric guitar consistently in their music, the guy on far right can play piano, cello, drums and guitar. so yeah i too, would love to see them in a room full of acoustic instruments and mics, it would be great :D

  • yeah dumbass listin to sung tongs thats acoustic and mic and its animal collective

  • It just needs the crazy drumming part for the 'epicness' that you all describe, that's all :)

  • yeah i think so, or it just could have been the same sample.

  • @ kayak0055

    fucking right.

  • wow they sang well on this... ive seen other videos in which vocals arent that great.

  • 1:51 should be more epic.

  • I feel like it should literally be capable of putting that audience in a trance.

  • couldnt agree more.

  • This is before MPP came out, so it's an early version, but I definitely understand where you're coming from. When he says that one line and the song explodes I feel infinite.

  • I actually read most of The Perks of Being a Wallflower to Animal Collective songs, lol

  • way more epic, that part send me to another world in my headphones i don't why they can't pull it off live.

  • @HoracioGo15

I know!! i was a lil diasappointed when i watched this but its still pretty sick.

    :P

  • Comment removed

  • @HoracioGo15 Why dont you do it since its "easy" right. What a crock.

  • @splinter360 Frankly, I never said it was easy. I understand where the crock part comes from but nevertheless i assumed this part would just be more grand that's all. I'm sure many other people thought that as well.

  • @kayak0055 actually totally agree, that part of the song should burst into life....not to convinced by animal collectives live performances tbh

  • @yearsley1234 @yearsley1234 watch the live videos from france.theres two. i dont like changing peoples opinion but i couldnt feel comfortable unless i knew you were determined on that opinion after watch THERE BEST performance ever. who else can agree?

  • @kayak0055

its just the bass is lacking in this video :(

  • @kayak0055 i agree.

  • @kayak0055 i agree but, then i listened again, and got used to it

  • @kayak0055 seriously... wtf

  • @kayak0055 Rofl yeah 1:51 sounds like a miniature of what is meant to be...

  • @kayak0055 i agree but you also have to remember playing songs live is very difficult when it comes to the style ac has.

  • @kayak0055 It should be. But remember were not there. Just not that much of a recording. I'd imagine if we were there it would be seriously epic.

  • @kayak0055 hmm I'm not sure, I think actually being there it would sound more impressive than it does recorded x

  • @kayak0055 Just remember what your recreate in the studio is always harder to do live. Especially when you mix and put so many effects into your music like AC do.

  • this is the best singing i've seen from them on youtube

  • its not as explosive as the studio version. Then again, i think this performance took place before they released MPP

  • Amazing

  • @beatlesrock they play comfy a lot actually..

  • Ive watched this same video at least 100 times this week.

  • @beatlesrock4ever actually yeah, you're right. Did you know the chat sample is from the awesome film Akira? (!!!!!!!!)

  • @beatlesrock4ever I thought it was going into Bluish

  • no that would suck

  • I saw this song live last week in Auckland and if possible it was even more compelling. Truly breathtaking.

  • jesus thats good

  • My fingers are tingling XD

  • 1:47=life

  • These guys are SO gifted :) Thank you!

  • words cant even explain how beautiful this song is...

probably the best live version of it.

avey and panda themselves are almost as beautiful as the song :]

    beautiful song.

    beautiful lyrics.

    beautiful band.

    ♥♥♥♥

  • beautiful.

  • haha true that

Though I don't find myself using the word too much ;)

  • One of the most beautiful song I have ever heard. It embodies the feeling that words cannot describe...

Animal Collective - Come to Seattle!!!

  • I love the album version, but this one just blows my mind. Its amazing how perfectly the music illustrates the "leave your body for a night" feeling.

  • thanks a lot for the vid and the full link too. bigup

  • there's no techno beat like in the album recording :(

  • words can't express how much I love this. it literally blows my mind.

"if I could just leave my body for the night", the best feeling in the world.

  • i love this song (8)(8)

    Really!

    DS.

  • The contrast between the beginning of the song and after the line'if i could just leave my body' is fantastic on the album! It just makes the song:)

  • this makes me warm inside XD

  • YEAH DILL!

  • on some real shit. im a trippin baalls right now yall.

  • i never really liked or understood animal collective till i was experianceing this on lsd. This song was incredible, i know this band is lying out thier ass when they say they dont do drugs...there is no way they are not on acid. once you give them a good few listens they will most definatly become favorites. the loops and sounds playing in the background are the same sounds your mind makes as you are tripping in new worlds. check out fireworks or pappiodaniel on myspace

  • you know... its possible for someone to be creative without drugs. what a sad life where you HAVE to have drugs to enjoy things!

im DEFINITELY not anti drug but cmon. maybe theyre just super talented.

  • good point, but don't get too hard on the guy, we're all different and what one person believes they need is not for another to lay value judgments on, right?

avey has mention being high as fuck in the past: end of the sung tongs tour in Portugal when Noah met his now wife is the only example that I can remember reading about...

I'm pretty sure they've dabbled more recently though.

  • who's laying value judgements?

*sigh* i'm simply trying to expand that guy's horizon :P

whether or not theyve dabbled, theyre awesome.

just like me. whether or not ive dabbled, im awesome!!

  • Cool: Stay awesome!!! :)

  • agreeeed.

I don't agree with your opinion of the best part of the song being the explosion. The verse following the explosion is some of the most beautiful (no, I'm not gay) eloquent, and insightful lyrics I've EVER heard. And musics my life ! :O

I mean, Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse has given me a lyrical gem or two; but this, this is unexpectedly emotion evoking.

  • don't worry dude straight people can think things are beautiful too

  • "no, I'm not gay" wtf? society has you really fucked up. that was a really sad thing to read for me.

anyway, this song is painful its so beautiful.

  • avey is a BABE

  • this version sucks compared to the album one. wheres the explosion at the start? meh...

  • Dude if I was them I would go crazy during the giant drum explosion

  • i totally agree, the best part of the song is the explosion after, "if i could just leave my body for the night"

  • Maravilloso

  • I love this song and this version is even better than the album version, brilliant.

  • Actually, Avey and Deakin themselves admitted to taking psychedelics on the Collected Animal's forum a few years ago...

  • geologist ftw

  • I probably wont do drugs when I go to see them at Lolla...and I'll have the time of my life (I will have some beers though) I'll be high on AC.

  • word. I would rather be high on AC any day than on drugs

  • magical yahhh lolll

  • I like this version better than the album one. Anyone know anyway to get this version?

    Best song ever.

  • I was really dissapointed that they didn't play this when i saw them, one of favourites on the album..

  • I really like this version. maybe more than the album version.

  • I did read an interview with them though when they said they "dont write the music when stoned, usually"

  • the original from the album has techno music in the chorus YAAY

  • Drugs arent great and you shouldn't talk like that. People die because of them. Think of it a bit...

And i hope AC dont take them...

  • how many times do you live? one. do drugs if you want to. dont do them if you dont want to. also, dont generalize, SOMETIMES people die from CERTAIN drugs. drugs are great, if you're not a fucking idiot about it.

also, i cant help but think that AC do indeed take drugs. sorry to burst your bubble. (correct me if im wrong folks, i havent heard any member confess to this)

  • In an interview, they said "No, we don't do drugs. No, we don't make music soley to enhance someones trip, and yes, we are tired of the question."

  • well there we go, i was wrong. the reason i said they probably do is that their stuff often seems as though it could have been inspired by trips possibly, but yeah im glad they said the part about not making music to enhance people's trips. sure it will probably enhance your trip immensely, but there is SO much more to it than that. i've never listened to them on drugs and i am still blown away every time i hear them. so very creative and experimental; the world needs more music like this.

  • I agree. The way I found out about them not using drugs, was by researching on whether they use drugs or not, because like you said, they do seem to have a drug kind of style. Take Peacebone's video for example. That definately isn't something you see everyday. Lol. And in a lot of their songs, their lyrics don't make any sense. I was surprised when I heard them say they don't use drugs haha.

  • "drugs are great" is a generalization...num-nuts

  • no. read the rest of my post. i did not generalize. also, i dont have nuts.

  • Comment removed

  • AMAZING

  • gotta see them live again..

  • yeah drugs are great. animal collective at lollapalooza! esa gonna be sweet

  • Ok get them to play it without Geologist, see how good it sounds. If you want to hear the album version, listen to the CD. I think it's refreshing to see a band willing to experiment with their own work and try something new, that's why I go to live shows.

  • They weren't experimenting, just omitting. Everything was good except Geo just decided to not put in the best part of the song: The thundering almost horse galloping bass in the climax. Ya know the shit that makes you move.

  • I'm not trying to argue whether this version is good or not, good is subjective and therefore different for everyone. If you don't like it, that's completely fine with me. I'm just saying they're the artists, they can play it however they want. Likewise, I'm not saying this version is in fact better, I just can't stand when I pay money to see a band and all they do is rehash the CD the exact same way I've heard it so many times before. If I wanted to hear the CD, I'd listen to the CD.

  • STOP LOOKING AT ME SWAN

  • Saw AC at Sasquatch Festival last week. Fucking incredible....

  • I agree with tumgats. There's no umph :( I was looking forward to it. My stomach always tenses up when he says the line "if i could just leave my body for the night" because i'm expecting the THUMP

  • If you actually took the time out of your busy day to put this on and let it surround you while you close your eyes, you wouldn't need "drugs." However, that makes the trip easier.

  • I think when the people are posting comments about taking drugs, it relates to how Animal Collective is in this video. It kind of reminds me of the doors live recordings, who did a lot of drugs and could be compared to this I guess. I wish that there was some way to have music be transcendental without drugs (I wish that there were some way to be outside in the rain playing basketball and not get wet.) Get it? Haha

  • i saw them last week and "if i could just leave my body for a week - BAM" was one of the best moments of my life

  • I love reading what you people have to say. thank you. puschwaba

  • Panda's umph is missing from this version. Still good though!

  • :) i like this song

  • I really fucking hate it when people say "listen to this high". I love this type of music because it is creative and just plain amazing. Drugs are the cheap way out. If you love and understand this stuff without the drugs, you are a true listener.

  • i'm with ya there, the music itself is a high

  • I agree 100%. I can't even add anything to that statement. Good job.

  • You are one huge fucking idiot. At least the way I see it, that is a bonus, and if you have ever been high(I'm guessing you have) then you do know how much better it sounds. It's an experience that cannot happen otherwise because of the fact that YOU ARE HIGH.

But I agree with you, those who only prance around saying that should probably stop being such drug addicts.

  • i agree with both of you.

drugs and music, and especially this music is a means of transcendence. drugs or not, both high - out of body experience. but who fucking cares its brilliant.

  • "Hey, ma! Get off the damn roof!"

  • If the artist that is performing is "high", does that make them not a "true" artist.-- not arguing your point, just a ?
