I was an IT major and I switched to mac only after installing SP1 on Vista 64bit my system crashed and I had to do a clean reinstall. After having a mac for a little over a year, I could not see myself going back. The operating system is so much more smooth and less buggy then windows. I play around on my dads Vaio and room mates Dell and after owning a mac you can tell a noticeable difference in just overall smoothness of operation.

I've never had any problem with the ventilation on recent Apple laptops. I know there was overheating problems with the older G4 Powerbooks. My 13 inch Macbook has 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with Nvidia 9400 graphics and 4GB of RAM. Totally happy with the performance on it.

Upgrades are similar with any laptop, hard drive and RAM takes 5 minutes to do with the one here.

BTW the DVD drive went duff 3 months after I got it. Local Apple store replaced drive while I waited. :)

My "laptop" or rather netbook is only 10 inches wide, and 3LBS, it is supported by a solid state hard drive, 2GB of RAM and an intel atom processor 1.6GHZ all for the cost of 299$

It is currently running windows XP pro and boots up faster than any of the new mac boot tests I have seen.

Even 10 inches is large to me =3 Nevertheless hideous design vs overpricing = macbook

Well the Alienware is a gaming machine, some of that price is for top notch high performance components. Can't exactly play Crysis Warhead very well on a netbook with Intel GMA and Atom CPU can we? ;)

FYI I did have a 10 inch Acer One netbook. But sold it recently because battery life was poor. Replaced it with a Sony Vaio P, which is running Windows 7 RC. It's coat pocket sized, battery lasts 4 hours.

Well I believe Apple dubs down performance and only really drags along other things in order to accomplish that lack of ventilation.

As for my good little netbook, she is not a power house, but she gets what I need done ^.^, if I wanted to play heavy based games, I certainly wouldn't be doing it on my lap lol.

By the way, for 2rds the price of one alienware product, i could probably build something better lol.

Actually there is plenty of ventilation in the recent Macbook and MBP. It's just that the vents are concealed in the hinge assembly, there is also a fan which kicks in if needed.

I'm pretty sure there is no dumbing down of performance. The Core 2 Duo and Nvidia 9400 are not underclocked, and the 4GB of ram is DDR3 1066, so no slowness here.

Apple and the like do make a higher profit on hardware yes. But that profit goes into paying for good after sales service and tech support. Plus the workmanship is usually higher.

A company which is making very slim margins on budget PCs, After sales service and tech support is often quite lousy, e.g. HP.

I may spend say £1000 GBP on an Apple or a Sony. I expect it to last maybe 3-4 year before replacing it. Something which is much cheaper may only last 18 months before it falls apart.

However I tend to use laptops a lot, carrying them around, frequently opening closing, on off cycles.

Over the years I've found that premium laptops made from aluminium, magnesium alloy, and carbon fibre, will outlast the cheaper ones made from plastics. It's nearly always the hinges wear out and break first on the cheaper plastic ones.

Not true, I use my netbook everyday and all over the place and it looks as new as it did the first day I bought it. Granted my netbook is still new, but I have many other portable things that still look brand new and they are quite used and old =3

As for non portable things, I have a 20+ year old PC that still runs like the first day it was made o.o

To my right is also an 11 year old PC that has only had its windows upgraded ( XP ) and it still runs perfectly.

Depends on your work!. The Mac Book Pro is used by many photographers and pro HDV Video users to edit in Final cut pro used by many film makers and the superior build quality. Having said that I also have a portable with windows XP for fast editing in Pinnacle 12 ultimate for weddings etc. All depends if you use a computer for work or leasure. Most of my clients who look at wedding photos say "wow what a smooth looking computer" NON have said it is ugly.........

That is such a luxury, you have no idea. I norway the 17 inch lowest price is 3500 dollars and the fifteen inch (2.66 GHz) is about 3100 dollars. The cheapest one (15 inches 2.4 GHZ is about 2500 dollars).

Macbook air- i have, great for college. Going to class and typing notes up in class with. Back in April of last yr I took it out and the teacher and I shit u not actually stopped and asked "Is that the computer?" Walked over and picked it up and asked me about it, some looked at me with envy, others hated me.
