  • love that song and im only 10 lol hate glee, jls, justin bieber etc any thin like that dont like but love the the

  • irelabd in the 80,s argentina 2012 and nothing seems to change!

  • Isn't ironic to listen to these lyrics and then see "Copyright owner Sony/BMG" in the description?

  • Long Live The The

  • dunno why people go on about Bob Dylan al the time, Matt is a fantastic lyricist. depresses me to realise that nothing has changed since i first heard this.

  • Awesome song - but the political analysis is weak - in fact the USA is a tentacle of the British Empire historically and today is STILL an offshoot of the London Financial District!

  • @BiggerThinking1 its mainly more to do with the war machine and american attitude, so many layers to this....

  • @wondrinminstrel Did i ask a question? NO!

  • @BiggerThinking1 No but you did talk sheeeittteee

  • @wondrinminstrel 1. You cant even spell onomatopeiacally. WTF is "shiteeee"?

    2. "No" is not a response even to shite - a response is "Thats shite" but not just "no". You sound illiterate.

  • @BiggerThinking1 here /watch?v=PYZpWTvre9c

  • @wondrinminstrel Already seen it - in fact its already in my playlists. But its totally irrelevant to what I said. You appear to have severe A.D.D. or something like that, yeah?

  • @BiggerThinking1 Here we go with the insults you idiot. You really are clever aren't ya? No? Yeah? And no is a perfect response you wanker. It is a word, it is a response, and I thought 'No' when I read your comment. Now kindly step back from the keyboard, put the keyboard down before you do something you regret

  • @wondrinminstrel Being a word is not a sufficient standard to qualify as even sufficient let alone correct response. Eg: Me; "I like ice-cream." U; "No" = FAIL!

  • @TheLOCATION100 Well it is in my book. If you ask someone if they want a cup of tea and they say 'No' are you going to complain and say 'You are supposed to say "No I don't want a cup of tea" '? Anyway I've got far more important things to do than argue this little point. Please just let's make love not war.....coz like Snap once said "Or I will attack and you don't want that" ;-)

  • @BiggerThinking1 i agree with you see my argument below...wonder boy dont see the bigger picture..city london rothschild...queen lizzie still demands tax to this day.plutocrat rules usa still pays city london ..in tax..george washington saw the future got dead for his troubles see history of the bauers(rothschilds)

  • @wondrinminstrel if you look at the small print america still pays tax to the crown..the american revoloution was about washington trying to escape british imperialismn..so i ,m afraid bigger thinking is doing just that..land masses may be one thing absoloute power trancends borders..

  • @BiggerThinking1 And you think the London Financial District is British, right?

  • @sullivan912 and you think the earth is flat right?

  • @BiggerThinking1 No, I'm sorry to say I don't share your view that the world is flat.

  • @sullivan912 WAAAAAAHAHAHAAHA - yeah ok - its flat! WAAAAAAAHAHAHAA

  • highly prophetic lyrics.

  • Matt Johnson was just the most under rated musician/song writer and the most 'spot the fuck on' writer of the past 25 yrs. I loved him then and I love to hear him now. I miss his musical presence and the wisdom of his words.

  • Still an absolutely brilliant song. Thanks for upping it.

  • Genius. Most important band ever.

  • It hits my soul with this bitter awareness. Show it on tv and in the schools

  • @gnarlyharley71 ha,ha,ha, listen to the human chicken talk, I'm amazed you have the ability to give out insults, since your country is a slave plantation, with 90% pc the population fast asleep under the complete domination of the 1% that controls you. keep sucking.from the.tit of the establishment and doing as ur told.

  • It's only 1% that we need to eradicate. Easier said than done!!!

  • @gnarlyharley71 cos u think I'm a moron, what makes u think I will change my opinion. ha, ha, ha, pointless comment really, muppet!!

  • Matt is a genius! I discovered that when Perfect 7'' & 12'' + Soul Mining were released in the 80s (Perfect was never on any album & Burning Blue Soul was never a The The album). Then came Infected...A genius but I never understood why my friends, exes, music lovers in general couldn't see it. He even had a little to do w me leaving my ex: sick of narrow mindedness from ''music lover'' who hated all I love mostly when didn't know it .

Have u ever seen a more UNDERRATED musical genius?!! WHY?!!

  • "So many people can't express what's on their minds,

Nobody knows them, nobody ever will,

Until their backs are broken, their dreams are stolen,

And they can't get what they want, and they gonna get angry."

Twenty-five years old yet it could be the theme of the 99%.

  • i must admit all his music rings true!! love matt johnson!

  • Means a helluva lot this Song during every year in late October when the Clocks go back to G.M.T.

  • yup.

  • I remember going clean off the rails to this toon in 1986.

  • C'mon people, don't sit on yer arses, there's a 'fight' on to put this country & world right, get down to Occupy the London Stock Exchange this saturday!

  • @stev1963hit Moron!

  • One of the most underated song writers of all time, classic track in the 'Thatcher' era and stands up today just as well.

  • great tune.

  • Download this song and make it xmas number one - to make it count download from tunetribe or 7digital

  • I was telling people about this song years ago NOW LOOK. Maybe the best socio-political song ever.

Anthem for the REVOLUTION. Come Get SOME

  • brilliant track the man was psychic

  • Matt Johnson's 51st state was the UK when he wrote it in 1986, but don't really have to change much of a word and this is "All 50 States Of The USA."

I can't think of a thing this guy has done that I hate, people don't connect with his work or think it too political, I could give a care, He's mine, all mine, your loss.

  • Superb track. Thanx . . It's all come true!

  • join the facebook group HEARTLAND by THE THE for xmas no. 1 - 2011 and spread the word, sock it to the man.

    .

  • @kingofmars68 on it like a bird on a bonnet.

  • joiun the facebook group HEARTLAND by THE THE for xmas no. 1 - 2011 and spread the word, sock it to the man.

  • Graciemaemarie11- Not WAS, IS. He's still around. Hopefullly with a new project in the works after last years soundtrack.

  • Some songs don't age

  • this guy was a genius

  • BRITS - we did it with Rage against the machine, tell everyone "The the - Heartland" for this years christmas number one - let's give the establishment one in the eye and determine whether they can see what's not written in the papers but written on the wall.

2011 Christmas number one - The the - Heartland

    SPREAD IT

  • @kingofmars68 It would be a little act of defiance against the government and the world we inhabit. Makes me smile at the thought of kids all over the land listening to this.

  • WHAT A FUCKING TRACK!!!! every word more relevant now than when it came out but it wasnt fashionable to hate thatch and the yuppie revolution then

  • @lindswin Totally agree with you about this ace tune, but believe me brother there were plenty of us who hated that evil woman at the time,& knew where her free market obsessions would take us.In fact, everything said by the so-called 'loony left' at the time proved to be spot on!

  • matt can see the future, and it dont look good for england

  • Good god, i first heard this song on a late night tv show in about 1987 and it's pretty much directed the type of music i listen to ever since.

  • All this man's songs are still frighteningly accurate 20 years on. And he should be given the recognition he deserves for his talent and bold accuracy.

  • @flowtideracing

Truly one off the greatest lyricists........

  • @flowtideracing Do people in Europe still feel this way about the USA? Just wondering because the USA is going straight into the crapper.

  • @flowtideracing Spot on. Absolutely spot on.

  • @flowtideracing too true, years ahead. where is he now? obviously got out early!!!!

  • sad and confused.....more vodka please Matt ;)

  • Top tune and still sounds good all these years on..A song about the elephant & castle in south east london...And how right you were matt!!!

  • The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, where is the the justice or fairness in that?

  • first comment is awesome and fucking true...what a band .............

  • Sorry to say thes lads is just Matt Johnson a one man wonder!!!!!!!!!

  • All this is returning with Cameronageddon...

  • @BLUEHIPPO47 and tony blair was a straight bloke was he? gaddafi,s drinking partner . blue or red they have all done damage to this country, anyway great track great band,

  • 1. That is one beautiful f-hole guitar.

    2. Infected is the finest The The album, in my humble opinion.

    3. This album should be listened to from start to finish as one piece if at all possible. With Infected, Matt paints perhaps the darkest sonic narrative I have ever found myself ensnared in.

  • 違うかもしんないけど なんだかスタイルカウンシルを思い出した

  • A band ahead of there time , lyrics from the mid eighties even more prominent today

  • This is all too relevant again, sadly

  • And here we are again in 2011 with yet another Conservative government, deja-fucking-vue, and this is what makes Matt Johnson totally relevant. He was bang on the money 25 years ago and now no more so than today.

Why oh why do people who earn less than a quarter of a million a year vote for these Tory scumbags? It's like a collective fucking political amnesia to the misery of the bastard Thatcher years.

  • @GNeuman I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that around 35% of the population are robots made out of meat, just waiting to be told what to do by the right wing press. Another 3% are just plain evil... that's just about enough to get someone in power.

  • @badnewswade Don't forget the left wing main stream press buddy. There's your other 62%!

  • @gnarlyharley71 your not from the Uk are you?

  • @lintburn What does that have to do with anything. The song says that England is the 51st state of the USA. I am from the USA! I take offense to that. I liked the song when I was young in the '80's, but now I have grown up physically and mentally! No government, or country is perfect, but I am proud to be an American!

  • @gnarlyharley71 to say the press is 62% left wing ,if you meant the Uk, it shows you know f all about the Uk therefore are retarded or not from the Uk

  • @gnarlyharley71 If you are offended by a song like this, then you have way too much time on your hands.

  • @GNeuman good job we had maggie to drag this useless country that had been totally messed up under Labour just like it is now left broke by good old tony & gordon who emptied the cupboards & left us in so much debt, get real!!

  • Comment removed

  • @GNeuman theres no party for the working class anymore

  • A great song that has passed the test of time. It's still evocative of the cold bleakness of a provincial England, spiritually bankrupt and devoid of hope

  • Beneath the old iron bridges, across the Victorian parks And all the frightened people running home before dark Past the Saturday morning cinema That lies crumbling to the ground And the piss stinking shopping centre in the new side of town I've come to smell the seasons change and watch the city As the sun goes down again Here comes another winter Of long shadows and high hopes Here comes another winter Waitin' for utopia Waitin' for hell to freeze over.

  • From the best songwriter arranger e volalist ever ,one of my favorite the the song.Never missed a song ,never a flawless, or a lack of ideas in his whole career. spread the only word you must say "the the".

  • man with this egypt crap going on how odd huh

  • @ Maestro...I'll forgive your pretentiousness...Maestro? LOL...but you're still a douchebag...your taste is in your ass when it comes to music....

  • @Maestrojay is Matt Johnson taking the piss. Its got to be.Only a deranged chimpanzee would say these are bad lyrics.

  • @MaestroJay since all music is subjective i can't argue with your opinion of matt johnson or the the. i have to take issue with your criticism of their musicianship though; the band is renowned for having hired out the best session artists around, having one or 2 phenomenal talents in their time (like johnny marr from the smiths). i don't know anything about composition but it doesn't matter. the music flows and the words flow. infact ignore my first line- you're an idiot, the tune is great.

  • @MaestroJay ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ...yaaaaawn...So you don't like this...who cares..?

  • @MaestroJay I'd ask you what you thought was worthy but you've answered my question already. You think there's "more talent in an elementary school" so from that I presume you're a big fan of "Glee" and "High School Musical" where everyone is obviously supremely talented. This would also suggest that you are either a girl or gay. Either of which is fine, and as much as you may feel you need to deny it we are happy that you are gay. May your prejudices keep your outlook narrow.

  • The pound to a dollar isn't what it used to be.

  • Matt Johnson is just a genius lyricist... Have listened to this track endlessly in over 20 years it is as rich n heady n addictive as ever!!

  • Have listened to this track a million times.. Matt Johnson is simply a genius lyricist and il never tire of him!!!

  • This should be the theme tune for #UKUncut

  • Thatcher's Britain to a tee and nothings changed.

  • this cd is fantastick . it was an lp when i first heard it you twats. enjoy.

  • what a phreak, we have in ben.

  • JESUS IS LORD. REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.//

  • Forget the political/lyrics comments.

I've loved this song for 20+ years, as it's just a great tune with fabulous strings - from 3.35 onwards it's just amazing.

  • matt jonson the prophet of profit we havent learnt anything

  • I LIKE THIS SONG BUT I DONT LIKE THE VIDEO... WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES AND HEAR THIS MUSIC, I IMAGINE A 18 YEARS OLD BLONDE DRINKING CHAMPAIGNE IN PARIS IN THE AUTUMN SEASON....

  • @SL1999 EH?????? have you listened to the lyrics?

  • don`t agree Matts voice is perfect for his song

  • If ever there was a time for a re-release.......

  • first time I listened to this song for years..

Unlike most songs from that generation its not dated, sounds fresh, relevant, menacing and rather excellent..

  • well ahead of their time.... more than relevant to todays issues///

  • @stormi6660

I AGREE, THIS ALBUM WAS A MASTERPIECE TO.

    MATT JOHNSON IS A GENIOUS,

  • What a lyricist Matt is for sure. Always loved him, he's got something to say....

  • like all the posts say, its all so true probably even more so now!! genius but is anybody listening??

  • still gives me goosebumps, still relevant today

  • This is what is coming under our new CONSERV-A-FUCKING-TIVE goverment

  • Fantastic, hitting lyrics. This is music!

  • .....from the best album ever.

  • very true still today, the message just keeps going !

  • This song is an example of how pop music was once rich in metaphor, insight , and political punch. While this song this was about the UK in the 80's it's really spot on to represent USA in the 00's. "until their backs are broken, the dreams are stolen, and they can't get what they want and their gonna get angry."

  • 24 years old and still not remotely dated

  • classic song writer, one of the best

  • The 51st state of the u.s.a as this country heads into slavery. Its being going on for far to long. Are we not tired of the darkness, I for one am.

  • @katoness Moron!

  • These lads should be ruling the country, they made more sense in 5 mins 17 secs than the government has over the last 30 years

  • @dubtoffee . How the truth shines......

  • @dubtoffee

    Spot on.

  • @dubtoffee i like your thought !

  • @dubtoffee it's not a band at this point mate! its just matt johnson! he didnt make it into a band till years later!

  • @TheYazoo321 No, last album credited to Matt J. was Burning Blue Soul, it was The The after that. But in truth, it is & always was MJ.

Btw I need to write to him: 'Dear Matt, I've been a huge fan since early 80s but I have a bone to pick with u. Wtf is your problem mate? How come 1/3 of your albums are either unreleased or discontinued?!!! You're the only artist I know who doesn't seem to care about promoting his music & you're in my top 5 faves. A detailed answer would be appreciated. Thx!'

  • Fantastic song has not aged at all still relevant.

  • @ivevu perhaps even more relevant!!

  • @ivevu You are right. I first heard them in 1988 and have said their lyrics are timeless in this world.

  • @ivevu

    Just as relevant as ever.

  • What guitar is that? Lovely

  • sorry mate that was uncertain smile

  • fact of the day - Jools Holland plays the piano on this track

  • He does however play on the Soul Mining album.

  • The most underated combined video and album of all time - as relevant today as when it first appeared in the eighties. Lyrically, visually, and instrumentally superb. "This is your captain calling - with an early warning".

  • I vote you this track sums up the future if were not carefull

  • not the future, more like the present

  • This song will be as relevant 20 years from now. One of my all time favourite The The tunes.

  • Top band, well worth searching for other cds.Marillion's Steve Hogarth on piano on this track.

  • Times change, and songs don't age

  • Amazing how prophetic some of Matt's songs are. Would love to know what he thinks of the state of the 51st state nowadays. It didn't seem so bad in '86.

  • Puts me right back to 1986 and being 18. Classic song and we need lyrics like this now.

Jools Holland on keyboards, by the way.

  • Really? I wasn't even born yet. And I first heard this song 10 years ago when I was 12.

  • Would say this is one of the best songs ever, but the rest of Infected match it.

  • FANTASTIC. It was then and it is now!

  • Yes it's still actual !! Great song!!

  • ... timeless classic!

  • Awesome song!
