He was clearly trying to make a layman-friendly illustration of how the M107 compares to other notorious small arms and cartridges. My guess is he chose the more widely recognized (at least in the US) 7.62 cartridge to represent the most widely recognized 7.62 rifle in an attempt to simplify the comparison for the layman. I'm not saying I agree with the tactic, but that's my theory.

He messes up the measurements because theres 2 different ways in measuring the caliber:

1) measure the bore (diameter of the barrel)

2) measure the distance between opposite lands/grooves in the barrel

For example 7.62mm is a measurement of the bore, whilst .308 is a measurement between opposite lands, yet both of these measurements are of the same rifle

Sad thing is the M82 has been around since 1982 and the M107 is just a variant of it. During Operation Desert Storm the military requested for some M82s and they were a hit. Back then they had a 12 round magazine which has now been decreased to the 10 round mag. And ffs the .308 is the 7.62x51mm, the AK47 bullet is .311" in diameter while the .308 is .308" in diameter. The .311 (7.62x39mm) has the ballistics of the .30-30 Winchester. There's a big difference.
