You are closer to the mark than you realize, in a sense. The Chinese name for "owl" is "cat-headed eagle."

It's the eyes. Also the feathers that form the "horns" on some species (they resemble cat ears).

That's the funny thing, actually. Housecats have slit pupils. Owls have round pupils like humans do.
The item the owl is playing with is a mimikaki. Japanese people use them to clean their ears.
I love the first "bite" it takes out of the cotton ball.
