Yes, your correct on the meaning of this song...this came straight from Charlie's heart, he did't require any musical back-up or any gospel singers to make it perfect, although in the final cut, they were part of the performance.

That dosn't mean that a listener can not get a feeling to actually go home to his or hers birthplace without actually dying. Interpretation is free, so are the awaken feelings. He had the pure voice I had heard and he drags you into every song. This song really makes me look back at my life and remember all the times I failed but also the good times. This is the first time I have ever heard this song. The words are very meaningful and seeing Charlie in his own world here is wonderful. When Charlie did finally go home I think I cried for a week. Naomi you have done a wonderful tribute to him with this video - showing the lovely marker on his grave is really special and is something we would never see ourselves. Fine video, NClackum. Did you do the video yourself? Charlie was an under-rated talent. I played many of his records while a DJ in Knoxville years ago, and more than once was accused of being a 'frustrated' rock dj because I played his old R&R too, on that Country Music station. He and his wife Margaret Ann collaborated on many songs. Had the pleasure of meeting him in '74 at a show. A quiet, gentle soul with much, much talent.

Charlie had so many recordings I had never heard back when they were first released, I don't remember hearing any of his earlier work on the radio in the 60's, except for Mohair Sam, and even then I had no idea who he was. This was his demo, it was only Charlie and one drummer in the background, and it was taped at his home studio. There's alot of soul in this one that you won't find in the final version.

I bought the 45 because of "The Most Beautiful Girl" which was a the hit for him back in 1973.  I finally played the other side "I Feel Like Going Home" and was completely floored by the lyric and melody. I have never heard anything of his even come close to that song. That is not a slur; it is a high complement. Here, again, is an example of what the "suits" (the clowns who ran the record companies deemed which side they would push to be a hit. What a shame more people have not heard it.

Yes, I was able to see it awhile back. Unfortunately, being the big fan of Charlie that I am, it's very difficult for me to listen to a song he sang originally and be unbiased about a cover version by someone else. Although I like both Bonnie and Trisha.

Ray Charles was a genius, when it came to R&B and soul music, but so was Charlie. No one should classifiy him strictly in the Country genre, as he was every bit as much of a soul singer as Ray. This isn't a country song, it's about as bluesy as you can get. But Charlie went beyond one form of music, he could do them all.
