Man I am touched by this amazing song. I see my childhood place for my very own eyes and the memories flows like a river to this beautiful anthem of love.... Well, I think I better go see it again.... Been a while :o)
I interpreted this song to mean that "going home" was about dying and moving on to a resting place, which for me, makes it a much deeper and more emotion message.
Yes, your correct on the meaning of this song...this came straight from Charlie's heart, he did't require any musical back-up or any gospel singers to make it perfect, although in the final cut, they were part of the performance.
It can mean both getting old and go home to your birthplace (to die) or go home to god. That dosn't mean that a listener can not get a feeling to actually go home to his or hers birthplace without actually dying. Interpretation is free, so are the awaken feelings. Anyways it's a beautiful song. Let's stick to that :o)
So soulful, so beautiful. Simply amazing. His voice is just out of this world on this song. This demo version beats all other versions of this song, including Rich's own album version.
Very cool, thanks for sending us over there. I still feel that Charlie's original version came straight from the soul, he lived these feelings. and no one else will ever be able to sing it quite like he did, for that reason.
I stumbled across this song a couple of weeks ago while looking for songs by Charlie. I can't believe I never heard it before. Actually, knowing radio, I can believe it. It's such a poignant song. I can completely relate, unfortunately. Still, it's nice to know I'm not alone when I dispair. Thanks again.
I'm glad you found it here. Surprisingly there are many of Charlie's fans that have never heard it, that's another reason for my putting the video together. Maybe if you'll listen to some of my others they'll help to cheer you up when you need it. Thanks so much for watching, and posting.
Sorry for calling you Namomi. Oops. I will look into your other videos. Some people say that this version or that is better than Charlie's. To each his own, but I don't see how. Yes, the other versions are very good, but they just don't reach out and take your heart away like Charlie. Thanks again.
He's also one of mine as well. When I look into those blue eyes and listen to him sing he takes me places I've never been before. What a man he was. We need to keep his memory alive as he is one of a kind. Naomi
charlie rich was the very first country music singer i liked. way back in 1971! his "rolling with the flow" and "going home" are two of his greatest in my opinion. the man could sing anything. thanks so much for this tribute. i sat and cried like a baby when i heard this song. it is so fitting for charlie. WE KNOW U ARE AT PEACE NOW!
Another one who left us much too soon. I feel like he was singing this about himself...Trisha Yearwood and Bonnie Rait havae a duet on this song on you tube too.
Naomi, Thank you for a perfect song. I started listening to Charlie Rich music when I was only 8 years old. When all my friends gave me a hard time about my love for country music. He had the pure voice I had heard and he drags you into every song. This song really makes me look back at my life and remember all the times I failed but also the good times. He was and always will be one of my all time favorites.
This is the first time I have ever heard this song. The words are very meaningful and seeing Charlie in his own world here is wonderful. When Charlie did finally go home I think I cried for a week. Naomi you have done a wonderful tribute to him with this video - showing the lovely marker on his grave is really special and is something we would never see ourselves. It was so sad listening and watching this video that when he said "that's it" at the end I laughed and even felt better. -Paula
Thank you so much for that wonderful comment Paulina, I really appreciate your sentiments.
This is a song that means alot to me, because I think of Charlie as the most talented singer/songwriter/musician of any generation, and I miss his music so much. I put this video together for fans like you who really appreciated his work. Thanks again. Naomi
Fine video, NClackum. Did you do the video yourself? Charlie was an under-rated talent. I played many of his records while a DJ in Knoxville years ago, and more than once was accused of being a 'frustrated' rock dj because I played his old R&R too, on that Country Music station. He and his wife Margaret Ann collaborated on many songs. Had the pleasure of meeting him in '74 at a show. A quiet, gentle soul with much, much talent.
Thank you RobertCee, your comments are appreciated! Yes, I did the video myself, I get alot of enjoyment putting these together and hope to do more in the future. Charlie had so many recordings I had never heard back when they were first released, I don't remember hearing any of his earlier work on the radio in the 60's, except for Mohair Sam, and even then I had no idea who he was. I'm a late bloomer when it comes to being a fan, but I feel he's truly one in a million. Naomi
Robert I can see that you know talent more than many of us especially when you played the songs each day by the artists. If the sound is good, whether rock, blues, jazz or pop or country,to me that's what counts. If we love an artist like Charlie we know that he was using his talent to appeal to many and through the years he did make many fans in all
areas of music. Wonderful you got to meet him. - Paula
I found this many years ago on a battered old vinyl rockabilly collection. A far superior version to the studio version. The best white soul singer ever? He gets my vote. Try the Complete Hi Sessions and cast your vote. Thanks NClackum, you're a diamond. LVIIV
Got to know this song from Jools Holland who featured Trisha Yearwood and Bonnie Raitt singing it. I was so knocked by the song I had to seek it out and Charlie's version is even better than theirs. Absolutely phenomenal !!

You're welcome about the comments & I suppose I was just reminded a bit of Ray Charles as I was listening & could have imagined him singing it too. I hear a gospel or spiritual sound in there somewhere too, although a single voice kind, not the happy clappy choir type. Have you watched the Bonnie Raitt?Trisha yearwood version on here?
Yes, I was able to see it awhile back. Unfortunately, being the big fan of Charlie that I am, it's very difficult for me to listen to a song he sang originally and be unbiased about a cover version by someone else. Although I like both Bonnie and Trisha.
Did you know that Charlie was often called the "white Ray Charles?"
If Ray Charles had recorded this song then we'd have never heard the last of it, about what a great song it is and how much emotional and soul you can hear in his voice. I'm not knocking Ray either as it is all true about him but Country singers can have soul too. :)
Ray Charles was a genius, when it came to R&B and soul music, but so was Charlie. No one should classifiy him strictly in the Country genre, as he was every bit as much of a soul singer as Ray. This isn't a country song, it's about as bluesy as you can get. But Charlie went beyond one form of music, he could do them all. I do agree with you, country singers can have soul and many of them do. Thanks so much for your comments!
