St John the Divine has had the Dalai Lama speak there, holds an annual Halloween 'Ghouls' Festival in the church, and blesses farm animals there every year!! This is abomination -BE WARNED!
"What concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?" -2 Corinthians 6:15
@RUKEAL Better get used to it man....you are going to meet a lot of these guys in the hereafter...assuming, of course, that your narrow and impoverished view of the Christian church doesn't condemn you to a long and lonely corner of heaven!!
@RUKEAL We are not told what Jesus ever did with his birthday present of incence but I like to think and hope that he got as much pleasure out of it as this great congregation obviously did with theirs whilst celebrating this self same birthday!!
@RUKEAL You should probably learn a little bit more about religion and Christianity (and incense), and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, before you spit out your arrogance about what constitutes an "abomination." I think God would be pleased by what was witnessed.
@ms103127 - I speak not for myself here - the Word of the Lord stands. Is it not written "For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men...Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."
Many things, such as halloween (a pagan festivity), and pagan speakers who deny the divinity and resurrection of the Son, have no part in the true Church.
@RUKEAL When I interpret Holy Scripture, I look first to what Jesus/God have to say, and then I interpret the rest thoughtfully and historically. You seem to forget two of the most important aspects of Scripture: To love your neighbor as yourself, and that you have no authority to judge anyone to anything (only God has that authority).
@ms103127 - Well then you should have no trouble interpreting the passages I have quoted. This kind of reproval is sanctioned by the Word of God:
'All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for REPROOF, for CORRECTION, for INSTRUCTION in righteousness' 2 Timothy 3:16
It is because I love my neighbour that I am concerned for the congregations of these wayward churches.
Are you actually trying to defend pagan festivities and such like in the house of God!?
@RUKEAL No, just the "Christianized" interpretations of them.... :) And, Holy Scripture, like all things of education, are open to interpretation from EVERY DIVERSE PERSON.
Perhaps we made need to "agree to disagree" on some of those interpretations. I do appreciate your comments though, thank you. :)
@ms103127 - 'Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage --with great patience and careful instruction.'
This is the command of the Lord, and in following this, one cannot be accused of holding any authority or judgement over anyone, one is simply performing the instruction of God.
@RUKEAL Stating that St. John's is an "abomination" for using incense (which has been used for centuries for holy purposes) and for accepting diverse points of view and individuals (Halloween and many other pagan traditions have been "borrowed"/utilized by Christianity) is not within your scope of authority.
In addition, to state that anyone that does not know Jesus in this life will not get to know Him in the next is very ignorant in my opinion, especially since anything is possible w/ God.
@RUKEAL Yes, WITHIN GOD'S AUTHORITY, not yours. God's logic/understanding/compassion/and will are things you need to learn to understand in terms of the "larger picture." :)
I would really love to go to this cathedral and the national cathedral in Washington on a day like Christmas Eve or Easter Sunday. I am an ELCA Lutheran and we are blessed to have a great organist and a nice pipe organ at our church, but I would really love to experience a Cathedral mass someday.
And also the very fine tradition of Alec Wyton for whom I had the honor of being a chorister lo these many years ago! I'm delighted the great organ is back.
you're very welcome newgate.. i wanted to share this with all who couldn't be there.. or those who were there and just wanted to hear it again... i had nothing to do with the music... give the credit to the fine musical staff at St. John the Divine. I just recorded it.
Good job! thanks for this post of my favourite organ any where. Bruce Neswick is wicked on those keys!! Keeping up the very fine tradition of Paul Halley and Dorothy Papadakos I see. Thanks again for the 3 posts
i was at that mass
