My Favorite Movie, All-Time. Take a close look at the rear of the Boats during the climactic attack on the Mogami Class Heavy Cruiser. You'll see Puffs of smoke coming from its Stern. I assume that these were the launchers for the Pyrotechnics. Also as pointed out the boat cast included 2 80 foot ELCO boats ( the 41 and the 34) with the other 4 boats being Huckins 79 footers.
You're more of a Navy guy than I am. I grew up around airplanes. But one of the great reasons this is the contemporaneous masterpiece of WW II movies is that it didn't matter. You can have the girl, if you drop the bomb or shoot the torpedoe properly.
@grabit1 I'm kind of a generalist where WWII is concerned. But this movie wasn't a complete waste for a Warbird Fan. In the attack scene on the Cavite Navy Yard the attackers were SBD Dauntleses and when the 34 Boat is attacked and destroyed those are OS2U Kingfishers. Both are very rare Birds today.
so guys did you notice the 77ft elco disguised as an 80 footer. take a look in the movie when John Wayne's boat is on the sea railway..pretty cool huh!
don't know why they had to do that ,but it's there. p.s. love this movie !!!
The Elco PT was initially designed to hit steel warships with WW-1 vintage torpedoes. Few actually sunk or damaged the steel Imperial Navy. What the PT did do well is what Dick Kersey called "20 yard shootouts" where their speed and multiple guns wreaked havoc with the Japanese barge traffic in the dead of night. These boats earned their stripes at night in nerve racking silent approaches, brief, intense firefights, and 45+ knot escapes.
The action sequences of the PT Boats running through courses of moored charges to simulate shell splashes and bomb explosions are awesome. In a few scenes you can just see the tiny marker bouys over the charges, they had to pick these up visually at close to 40 knots and getting too close to any of them could have resulted in somebody being killed. In a few shots the helmsman profile looks like Robert Montgomery operating, he served on PT Boats in World War Two.
Robert Montgomery gives a great performance in this film as well - also offering his expertise - being in the service as well.....
Also - the relatively well known character actor who portrays the old pipe-smoking
"Dad" who takes care of the boats and keeps them running (not an easy task!) is a joy to watch in the movie too. (Russell Simpson). Ward Bond also adds a nice touch of ruggedness and sensitivity.
You really have to love that very special Packard engine rumble too!
This film was considered by many film historians to be the finest WWII movie ever made.....My vote too! Fantastic musical score, rare PT boat footage, fine cast, fine direction and special effects, and for me - one of John Wayne;s best performances in a film I'm sure he treasured as one of his favorites to be in.
Another very rare PT Boat movie was of course "PT 109" with Cliff Robertson as our late President Kennedy and was very accurately depicted as well, as per JFK's book - PT109.
You get no argument. It was the finest contemporaneous film to come out of WW II. And in 1945, a year that also saw others (A WALK IN THE SUN and THE STORY OF G.I. JOE.)
Sink The Bismarck also grades A for model work, no matter what James Cameron might complain. Howard Lydecker's Hood going up is, as Capt Lindemann stated, "unbelievable".
Hey there. I know the PT Boats weren't models, but I was thinking the Japanese cruisers were. Were they, and if not, I've been trying to find what type of mock-ups they were and how big. Thanks, Grabit1!!!
I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure the Japanese boats weren't models (the explosions look too realistic and intricate). You can also see the water draft of the camera boat in several shots. On the other hand, I'm not sure what kind of mock-ups they were. Hard to tell since they were photographed from a distance.
As far as I can tell about the PT Boat shots, the "flak" is boat launched; the bullets ripping into the water and explosions alongside had to be strung below water with the boats navigating along a pre-determined course between and around them.
Those models, though, got me stumped. Best pyro effects for warships torpedoed ever, with "Run Silent, Run Deep" a close second even in year 2011.
Watched the movie 30 times, at least; and the explosions, hundreds, trying to find the secret behind Buddy Gillespie's pyrotechnics. Can't find a thing on how he did it.
Of course, magicians never release their secrets. But does anyone know the story behind the Japanese cruiser models, the water tank if used, and how the exposions were done? That darn model had to be 20 feet at least to scale properly with the fireballs and stars shooting out like gun ammo igniting.
Its great that you have access to all these trailers..........but they're ONLY ADS..............would it be possible to post a couple of complete films. No offfense...............watchin trailers ain't shit.
I've posted whole films before, and YouTube has deleted them due to copyright infringement--they won't allow copyrighted material to be shown free of charge when some company or group owns that film. Sometimes people post whole movies and they're left up for months, sometimes only a couple of days before they are deleted. I've posted these trailers not to advertise anything, but just to pay tribute to the films, filmakers, actors, etc.
Thanks so much for the emailed explanation re: temp status when attempting to post entire films, its too bad. But, I appreciate your taking the time to explain the difficulties one encounters when attempting to post films.
In fact I been using VEOH , movshare, and stagevue for awhile now. Got to watch the above film when I found the player. I use Blinks to find movie lists.
@drmarosen Not today. Your looking for the YouTube run by drunken sailors. Don't worry, you'll find it soon. We got more than enough drunken sailors running things in my country to go around. But at least you get the point this time. THEY WERE EXPENDABLE Your video sure was. :)
This was copied directly from DVD, and then converted to MPEG. The audio track on the trailer, taken from the official DVD release, is lousy quality to begin with. I figured since the audio wasn't cleaned up before it was issued on DVD, I wouldn't bother doing it myself.
This movie has enough manly heroics in it to make todays Leftist Liberal men... run to their moms basement and cower like a frightened little girl!

These weren't models. There were special effects, to be sure, back projection and otherwise. But these were real boats, blown up in Tampa Bay.

@grabit1 Effects guys like the Lydeckers, Gillespie (They Were Expendable) and Meddings were magicians. They'd never tell their secrets! : )
That's why we've had so much trouble finding how they did things.

Get the latest DVD version. The soundtrack is just fine.
And of course, it was a John Ford movie. Silence was more important anyway.
